When Eastern State opened more than 180 years ago, it changed the world. This was the world's first true “penitentiary,” a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of prisoners. Canada looked south of the border and said yes please. Fast forward to today, our incarcerated citizens still live in the legacy of this weird idea.
