Ep. 68 Struggling with clinical depression, a resilient Black woman strives to be seen and heard in a world that demands she be "stronger than everyone else," uncovering research that reveals how Black women experience depression differently than White women.
"Healing is possible, recovery is possible, and you can live a full, complete and healthy life while also managing living with mental health conditions."
As a black woman living with depression, I was intrigued when I came across an article about the signs of depression in black women. After reading the research done at NYU and Columbia, I could relate to the symptoms of self-hatred, self-blame, and the inability to experience pleasure. This research opened my eyes to the fact that there is a medical mistrust among black and brown communities and that this mistrust can contribute to people not seeking help for mental health conditions. I'm now committed to creating safer and more forgiving environments in my family and community to help those in need seek the help they deserve.
In this episode, you will learn the following:
1. How the signs and symptoms of depression manifest differently in Black women.
2. Why people of color often do not seek mental health or medical treatment.
3. What we can do to foster more healing communities, rooted in addressing the effects of racism?
