We use social media, likes and comments, compliments from others, our parents telling us they’re proud of us… We actively go out and search for honest understanding. Acknowledgement. Feelings. That’s the how. The WHY is because it’s human nature. As we’ve spoken about 100 times, one of the most essential human needs is to feel significant, and the way we do this is through validation.

But validating your OWN thoughts and emotions will help you manage yourself more effectively. Because social media won’t always be there for you. It helps you find wisdom. It helps you become more self aware. If you accept that you are feeling… jealousy, for example, and you understand the reason behind it, then you can learn from your own experience. You can validate your own feelings, and move on - and up. Being present validates that YOU and your feelings matter. Feel the physical sensations.

4) Remember the past - You’ll often have thoughts and feelings based on events that happened in the past. Maybe you hate when your friends argue because it reminds you of when your parents did that and used to pit you against one of them. But go back to number 2, the honest reflection, and say to yourself, “I understand that I am afraid of arguments because when i was younger, my parents hurt each other during conflict.” They’re not related. Validate the feeling by remembering where it came from, and understand that it’s not the same

5) Normalize your feelings - Of course it would make sense that I feel sad - I got turned down for a job. It’s normal to feel painful emotions. No one is happy all the time. Sadness and pain is commonly felt by other people. You’re normal.

6) Be Genuine - Don’t lie to yourself. Don’t tell yourself it’s ok when it’s not. Don’t pretend to be someone you aren’t. Changing some behaviours that are invalid and not congruent with you will alleviate some of the suffering you experience. But you have to practice. Practice practice practice al of these steps to help you self validate more naturally.
