When he was roaming the sidelines as head coach of the NFL’s Oakland Raiders in the 1970s, John Madden was frequently more entertaining than the broadcasters who were calling the game on television. So it came as no surprise when he left the field and went up to the broadcast booth after his coaching career ended. From there, his legend only grew larger, as he lent his voice and his expertise to the Madden Football video game franchise, which has spawned more than three dozen releases since it was first introduced in the late 1980s. Now, the game and the man are being celebrated with a new documentary series, It’s in the Game: Madden NFL. We spoke to Madden several times before his death in 2021, and he talked to us about how, when the Electronic Arts team first worked with him on the idea of the video game, they were in uncharted territory, and as they started coming up with concepts for the game, nobody had any idea how big it would eventually become.
