In this episode of the Emotional Intelli-Gents Podcast, Ismail and Sameer will explore the dark side of being an emotionally intelligent leader, and specifically the unintended negative impacts high EQ leaders face professionally and personally. Most of what you may hear or read regarding emotional intelligence centers around it being a coveted skill that leaders must possess to be successful. However, the very skills that make high EQ leaders successful, like empathy, openness, self-awareness, and social awareness can also cause these same leaders to become more stressed and anxious.

There are a number of negative consequences even the most successful high EQ leaders are facing every single day. In this episode, we will take a deeper look into four potential pitfalls many high EQ leaders are feeling every single day.

Emotional Exhaustion

Constantly attending to the emotional needs of others can be incredibly draining, especially if you're unable to recharge or take care of your own emotional well-being.

This exhaustion can manifest in various ways, including burnout, mental fatigue, or even physical illness. To combat this, it's crucial for emotionally intelligent individuals to prioritize self-care and set boundaries to ensure they have the energy to care for themselves as well as others.

Overemphasis on Emotion

In some cases, emotionally intelligent individuals may prioritize their own emotions or the emotions of others over the most rational or practical approach to solving problems. This can lead to action or inaction that puts teams and business at risk. Finding the balance between objective data-driven approaches and emotional response is a key to overcoming this challenge.

Perceived Insincerity

Emotionally intelligent individuals can often adapt their communication style to suit the needs and preferences of others. While this can be beneficial in building rapport and fostering positive relationships, it can also be perceived as insincere or manipulative.

will need to be intentional about being transparent and authentic in their interactions to ensure they do not run the risk of appearing robotic or simply pandering for the sake of others.

Poor Boundary Setting

Learning to set proper boundaries is crucial for maintaining a leader’s overall mental health. High EQ leaders typically are excellent at empathizing with others, but this can come at a cost to oneself. Leaders need to be able to separate their emotions from the emotions of their team-members who may be struggling even if they feel compelled to help.

The common thread between many of these pitfalls is that many leaders may not even realize that they are struggling with these symptoms of unhealthy practices that lead to high stress and anxiety at work. This episode will help you identify when the dark side of emotional intelligence is causing strife in your life, and helpful tips and tricks to overcome the resulting issues.
