Manage episode 406239093 series 3436805
Andrew Dyer (2016-18) was enlisted in the Navy for over 10 years and served on two aircraft carriers before returning to school and pursuing a career in Journalism. Dyer explains why he wanted to become a writer, how covering the craft beer industry for San Diego City Beat developed his reporting skills, and finding a home on student newspapers.
A former Editor In Chief for The Daily Aztec, Dyer has worked for Voice of San Diego and the SD Union-Tribune, and is now a military and veterans affairs reporter for KPBS, where his stories appear on TV, radio and the website.
Dyer reflects on writing stories during the controversy over whether the Aztecs mascot would change its name, the advantages of covering the military when you're a veteran, and covering the recent rise in the local extremist movement in San Diego.
"Where Ya At?" is a podcast focused on the School of Journalism and Media Studies at San Diego State University. Each week, during the Fall and Spring semesters, host Josh Suchon (Class of 1996) interviews alumni to learn about their experiences as college students, entering the workforce, key steps in their professional development, advice they'd give to current students, and details about how they covered a specific story.
