Artificial intelligence is evolving at an unprecedented pace—what does that mean for the future of technology, venture capital, business, and even our understanding of ourselves? Award-winning journalist and writer Anil Ananthaswamy joins us for our latest episode to discuss his latest book Why Machines Learn: The Elegant Math Behind Modern AI . Anil helps us explore the journey and many breakthroughs that have propelled machine learning from simple perceptrons to the sophisticated algorithms shaping today’s AI revolution, powering GPT and other models. The discussion aims to demystify some of the underlying math that powers modern machine learning to help everyone grasp this technology impacting our lives, even if your last math class was in high school. Anil walks us through the power of scaling laws, the shift from training to inference optimization, and the debate among AI’s pioneers about the road to AGI—should we be concerned, or are we still missing key pieces of the puzzle? The conversation also delves into AI’s philosophical implications—could understanding how machines learn help us better understand ourselves? And what challenges remain before AI systems can truly operate with agency? If you enjoy this episode, please subscribe and leave us a review on your favorite podcast platform. It's trade deadline week and after three more weird games in a weird season of a weird era, we still have no idea who the Islanders are or what they'll do. They started with a home ice faceplant against the Rangers - predicted by Mike - before stealing two points in Boston. Then they beat the Predators - predicted by Dan - which started as a laugher and became oddly tense. The main character in all of them was Ilya Sorokin, who went from being the goat on Tuesday to being an unlikely goalscorer on Saturday, and continues to be an occasionally flaky, mysterious dude who can also be one of the best goalies in the NHL. In the second half, we look towards the next two games, which might be the true final contests of the Islanders' regular season. It all depends on how they handle the trade deadline, which at this point is anyone's guess. They could have a completely different roster when they play in San Jose next Saturday, or be exactly the same after sitting the deadline out and keeping everyone. It's a strange spot to be in - and totally inline with how this version of the Islanders conducts its business. At least we know what the professional liars will say either way. That's all we've got. Mike and Dan recap a haunted game against the Dallas Stars and look ahead to what might effectively be the final week of the Islanders' regular season. Sure, it was one game but, boy, did a lot happen. Weird goals, crushed hope, crazy calls and The Hockey Gods and the Islanders taking turns shooting feet. This team still lives on the same edge they've been on for years, where one turn of events throws the whole train off the track, and they're doing it again... again. There's a lot at stake in the next five games - two of them against their biggest rival and two more against teams they rarely ever beat - and we could be on the precipice of an era of great change for the Rich Long Island Dads. Whether that change is good or not is pretty frightening. We also discuss the hardest team situations in the NHL and what makes beard "tasteful," as well as pay tribute to two lost broadcasting legends. Subscribe to our Patreon! Along with NHL documentarian Pinholes Graham, Mike and Dan remember Jamie Heward, a quality defenseman whose super power was simply showing up everywhere. Drafted by the Penguins and spending years in the minors, Heward got his big break with the expansion Predators before joining the Islanders for just one year. That undermanned and underpaid team needed a lot of help, but Heward provided timely scoring and some defensive awareness where he could. After two seasons in Columbus and a sojourn to Europe, Heward returned to the States to play for the Capitals, who were just beginning their Ovechkin Era. That was where a young Pinholes Graham kept seeing Heward's name appearing throughout Caps box scores and began wondering, "what's the deal with this guy?" The answers might surprise you. Thanks again to Pinholes for coming on. We are huge fans of his YouTube videos on weird or forgotten NHL tidbits and we cannot recommend them enough. Mike and Dan chat with Arthur Staple of The Athletic about Brock Nelson, Noah Dobson, James Hagens and a number of Islanders topics. After briefly discussing on the Four Nations Face-Off (yes, we gave in), we dive into the uncertainty surrounding the Islanders on an off the ice. Nelson's free agency is first, of course, and Art maintains his feeling that Nelson will be traded at or before the deadline on March 7. But there are many considerations in doing so that make the spot a difficult one for GM Lou Lamoriello. The same goes for Noah Dobson and his next contract, while a trade of the young defenseman seems unlikely. In the second half, we talk about Hagens, the Islanders fan who will be a high pick in this year's draft, as well as Cole Eiserman, Danny Nelson, Quinn Finley and other reasons for optimism in the Islanders' generally dismal development system. We end with questions about the coach and the integration of the new players into the team's historically tight locker room. As always, we can't thank Art enough for his time and insight and we'll try to get him on again after the dust settles. Subscribe to our Patreon! Here's a sample of this month's Patreon-only Monthly Mail Bag, which is (mostly) dedicated to Brock Nelson, who might be in his final days with the only NHL club he's ever known, or might be on the verge of a contract extension that will be ridiculed no matter how reasonable it is. The full version includes our answers to questions about rebuilds, EBUGs, James Hagans, free agents, one-season wonders and, somehow, comic books. We also talk about what the NHL could actually do to remedy their dire TV product (as opposed to what we normally do, which is just tear down the whole operation). We also expose what we thought was common knowledge: that the "Josh Bailey Song" isn't actually about Josh Bailey at all! Mike and Dan recap where the Islanders are at the Four Nations break and discuss some recent rumors surrounding them. Despite a hot January, the Islanders are still four points out of a playoff berth with a large group of teams surrounding them and a disconcerting amount of injured players. While the winning streak pulled them out of the basement, they still have a large hill to climb which means the rest of the season and the trade deadline come loaded with a lot of questions. There's no telling what they might do or how the Eastern Conference will shake out, which is both exciting and scary. In the second half, we look ahead (barely) to the Four Nations Face Off and analyze the trade rumors that have popped up around Noah Dobson and the extension rumors about Brock Nelson. The possibility of both or neither exists and only Islanders fans will see the many nuances in both topics that the professional liars, prejudiced fans and other assorted idiots won't see. We have no answers but at least we've watched this team play all season, which is more than we can say for most people who talk about it. Subscribe to our Patreon! Mike and Dan make their picks to each create a team of Weird Islanders from the past 25 years. It's been quite a journey for the team since 2000, from highs and lows to mercenaries and stalwarts to kids and veterans and three home arenas. And through all of it there were weird players who only wore the blue-and-orange for a short time. So we each put together a starting six based on gut feelings, good memories and attempted representation of where the Islanders were as a franchise at the time. Some we've talked about before and some are new but all of them made an impression despite quick exits. From big playoff goals to unmet expectations to truly anonymous players to first round picks to bad facial hair, we cover a lot of ground to build the best rosters we can from the Weirdest Islanders we could find. And we want to hear from you! Who do you think built the better team? We didn't make it easy on ourselves (because we almost never do and it's the Islander way). Subscribe to our Patreon! Mike and Dan take stock and take cover as the Islanders rack up both wins and casualties in a battle against the Hockey Gods. By stretching their winning streak to a "disastrous" seven games - before a gallant, teasing loss to the Stanley Cup champion Panthers - the Islanders reinserted themselves in the Eastern Conference playoff race. That's the good news. The bad news is that they continue to lose bodies, the latest being Mat Barzal and Scott Mayfield, and their surprisingly effective junkyard blueline might not be able to withstand much more punishment. Their three tough upcoming games will go a long way towards determining how the rest of the season goes, but as of right now, demigod Lou Lamoriello is trying to fight off the deities playing games with his people. In the second half, we go deep into another Master Pens Theater and learn why you cannot make Sidney Crosby trade proposals or question Kyle Dubas's moves, even the bad ones. We also get a look at the JT Miller trade from the Vancouver side and what it has to do with Bo Horvat. With yet another defenseman (and a goalie) landing on IR, Lou Lamoriello was forced to make another acquisition to keep the Islanders afloat and we are forced to talk about both. In an addendum to Monday's episode, we discuss the signing of Tony DeAngelo and our feelings about bringing the quarrelsome defenseman into the Islanders' fold. But we also discuss the trade for another defenseman, Scott Perunovich, who was once a prized prospect for both the Blues and a certain notable hockey podcast. A former Hobey Baker winner, Perunovich battled injuries and lost roster spots in his time in St. Louis, and might be a nice get for the Islanders, provided he can avoid the calamity that has chased their blueline around all season. Along the way we touch on off-beat goalie options, learn more about Hibbing, Minnesota and the Perunovich tradition of fighting back hordes and tease an upcoming new edition of Master Pens Theater. Mike and Dan discuss a week of unfortunate injuries and surprising wins for the Islanders and how they've had almost no effect on their place in the standings. Beginning with a win over the then-red hot Blue Jackets before a back-to-back that included a boring but needed win over the Flyers and a surprising OT win over the revamped Hurricanes, the week was another roller coaster for fans who have endured a lot in this season alone. While their path to the playoffs is still long and filled with nearly a dozen direct rivals, and they'll now be without three key contributors in Noah Dobson, Ryan Pulock and Marcus Hogberg, there were moments of genuine enjoyment this week for the first time in what feels like forever. Whether it was Anthony Duclair and Alex Romanov finally getting back on the board, Bo Horvat scoring an honest-to-god power play goal, Brock Nelson crushing the Canes in overtime or an injured Hogberg returning to the ice to accept his Third Star of the Game award (and Butch Goring's amusement at his nickname), the Islanders reminded us that we can still find fun in this sport. In the second half, we look at an upcoming slate of games that might derail that fun, and look at that big Hurricanes-Avalanche trade that confirmed a lot of what we believe about the Islanders, the NHL and the people that cover them. Mike and Dan talk with IslesEbay master Craig Dixon about Tommy Söderström, the shambolic Swedish goalie who lost a lot of games in his short time as an Islander. Söderström parlayed international success into a stint with the Flyers, who sent him to Long Island in exchange for the pariah Ron Hextall. Sadly, Söderström didn't fare any better, and "backstopped" some of the worst Islanders teams ever assembled. He did himself no favors by looking like he just walked off the street to play goal that night, and despite a few very rare highlights, was cast aside just as quickly as he was acquired. He found success (and money) back in Sweden but he left some bad impressions on the few that watched those teams play (mainly us). Craig tells us about his ebay obsession and some favorite pick ups from over the years, how Söderström affected his young fan mind at the time and respecting his combative attitude and his abrupt goodbye to hockey. Mike and Dan discuss the Islanders' win over the Sharks on Brent Sutter Ring of Honor Night that, while pleasant enough, did little to change anything about this team or its season. For once, the Islanders took care of business beating a bad, under-the-weather opponent. Too bad it comes more than halfway through a season in which they've been farting around on the ice and with our emotions. A follow-up run against Metro Division opponents who are actually trying only serves to make the victory even more hollow, assuming the Islanders win their customary one or less games this week. We also discuss the warm and welcome Sutter ceremony and bring back for just the second time Master Pens Theater, as the Penguins say goodbye to a guy they shouldn't have said hello to in the first place, and the guy who opened the door doesn't get blamed at all. In their first emergency podcast of the year, Mike and Dan react to the Islanders' back-to-back losses to start their homestand and how little fight they have shown all season. Tuesday's 2-0 loss to Ottawa and Thursday's 5-3 loss to Philadelphia represent something of a breaking point. A team that once showed pride in the Islanders logo and in Long Island looks checked out and ineffective. A chance to build upon their three game road winning streak has gone and, once again, it looks as if no one is going to do anything about it. There's no pushback, no excitement, no juice, no nothing. Just a stale roster playing boring games inside a "food court with an ice rink in the middle." If something doesn't change soon, the owners will be looking at a lot of empty seats and canceled season tickets. Because this team looks beyond cooked and needs a change in not just roster players but attitude and philosophy as well. Subscribe to our Patreon! The Islanders have finally won three (3!) in a row including impressive victories in Vegas and Utah and Mike and Dan feel satisfied and relieved in a way they haven't all season. An unexpected shutout against the Golden Knights gave way to a gritty win against Utah that could have been "one of those games," were it not for a dogged effort to get the points. Both wins were call backs to more successful times and whether it was Lou Lamoriello's impromptu vote of confidence, healthy players returning to full form or the magic powers of a rubber chicken (?), the Islanders looked and played better than they have in a while. In the second half, we examine the season-long seven game homestand they have coming up that can really vault them back into the playoff picture, as long as they continue to stack wins. We also debut a new PBS-like feature which surely will interest fans of whodunits, detectives or overwritten articles about uninteresting teams from the Midwest - The Michael Russo Mysteries . Dan chats with current Rangers and former Islanders beatwriter Colin Stephenson about Brett Lindros, who was expected to be a star but was forced to retire far too soon due to concussions. Following in the footsteps of his brother Eric, who was already a force in the NHL, Brett was a charming, well-spoken boy in a man's body when the Islanders selected him in the first round of the 1994 draft. With a lockout and disastrous previous season draining the customer base, the team put Lindros on the ice immediately, where he was a willing fight combatant but not much of a scorer. By Year Two, a series of head injuries became too much for him to bear, and at the age of just 20, he had to leave the game and the team that had hoped he would lead their next generation. Colin talks about covering this "eventful" Islanders era and about his dealings with Lindros before the "shattered dream" of his career had to be ended. The Islanders made a lot of mistakes back then, mostly off the ice, and a kid with a lot of promise paid the price for them. Subscribe to our Patreon!
