×Just occasionally in all the years I've been doing this, mostly for laughs, I've made a few little, ahem, tributes, to some of our political adversaries. The 187th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast is a run through of some of the best of these, because I think most of us are in need of a laugh at the moment. Hope you enjoy. These podcasts are independently minded and independently funded, you can help to keep them going by making a donation. http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/ https://twitter.com/mgreenwell https://www.facebook.com/TheScottishIndependencePodcast/ http://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6_LfMf1z6erDXSCHfw6_Bw/videos…
The 186th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast is amongst other things, a mix of some bad excuses. There's a bad excuse for a Prime Minister, a bad excuse for a President of the United States, and a few bad excuses for the behaviour of the British Empire. Along with that, there are people trying to expose those excuses, and how they got on with it. Hope you enjoy. http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/ https://twitter.com/mgreenwell https://www.facebook.com/TheScottishIndependencePodcast/ http://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6_LfMf1z6erDXSCHfw6_Bw/videos…

The 185th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast is a talk by Broadcaster, writer and activist and former guest on the show, Billy Kay, about Scottish identity. Have you ever noticed when you go abroad that the locals always seem to know what happened in 1437 in every wee nook and cranny of their town. Have you also noticed that this often isn't the case in Scotland? Why would that be? Kay explores this idea in the talk, but also provides some great stories from Scottish history, and there are a few revelations as well. For example, which UK Prime Minister may well have supported Scottish Independence? Which SNP MSP alledges that she was followed around the Houses of Parliament in the dark by Scottish Labour MPs. Also, there's something about the special branch meddling in the Scottish Independence Movement. All that and more, hope you enjoy. http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/ https://twitter.com/billykayscot https://twitter.com/mgreenwell https://www.facebook.com/TheScottishIndependencePodcast/ http://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6_LfMf1z6erDXSCHfw6_Bw/videos…
The Queen, God, the EU (in and out), your mate's dug, Alpha Centauri, cherry tomatoes, wind, Nigel Farage, xylophones, Bungle from Rainbow - whatever it is, if you listen to some people, it's a reason against Scottish Independence. The latest they are using is the virus, so for the 184th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I have taken some pieces of talks from before the coronavirus and I'm asking to you to think about if they still apply, or even, are they more urgent questions than before? And it finishes with an idiot for good measure. Hope you enjoy. http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/ https://www.facebook.com/TheScottishIndependencePodcast https://twitter.com/mgreenwell http://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6_LfMf1z6erDXSCHfw6_Bw/videos…
For episode 183 of The Scottish Independence Podcast I'm taking you back to that wonderful world of a dew months ago in which the only things we had to worry about were Tory lies causing unnecessary death and hardship, and a babbling manboy in the White House. Oh wait, both of those things still apply. Anyway, it's a collection of whoppers, evasions and other nefarious activity from the Tories, just in case you ever forget what they are like. Hope you enjoy. http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/ http://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6_LfMf1z6erDXSCHfw6_Bw/videos https://www.facebook.com/TheScottishIndependencePodcast https://twitter.com/mgreenwell…

"A mendacious drunkard's promise, made to convince his wife not to leave him", yes you guessed it, The Vow. However, the 182nd episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast is, thanks to Independence Live, a talk given by Mark McNaught with an intro by John Drummond (former convenor of the Independence convention). It's about the importance of making a draft consitution for Scotland BEFORE a second referendum. It also gets into the problems with the constitutional situation in the UK "Arguably the most incoherent and feudal political system on Earth". The project, which seems to be on hold at the moment, can be found at Scottishconstitution.com Hope you enjoy. http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/ https://twitter.com/mgreenwell https://www.facebook.com/TheScottishIndependencePodcast http://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6_LfMf1z6erDXSCHfw6_Bw/videos…
Obviously you weren't expecting there would be any UK wide celebrations of The Declaration of Arbroath, were you? However, the indy movement has stepped up and we've had the documentary by Lesley Riddoch and Charlie Stuart, and there will be an illustrated version too. For my own part, I decided just to read the whole thing, not the few quotes we usually hear, and make it available as audio, so here it is. Obviously I read the translation from the National Library of Scotland, not the original Latin. Doing it, it was easy to see how it is in part a plea, partly a statement of intent, in one part an offer, and in another part a threat. A truly interesting document. A pity that no one in British broadcasting seems to think so (I know there are other things going on right now, however if they had had any intention of doing anything it would have been planned and done before the coronavirus outbreak). Hope you enjoy. http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/ https://www.facebook.com/TheScottishIndependencePodcast http://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6_LfMf1z6erDXSCHfw6_Bw/videos https://twitter.com/mgreenwell…

The 180th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast is, thanks to Independence Live, a talk given by John Drummond (former convenor of the Independence convention). In this talk he explains to an audience why he thinks it is a pivotal that we have a constitution prepared and ready to go before a second referendum, and not as something to be decided after. The 178th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast is a long in-depth look at the Scottish economy and what may happen after Brexit. It features friend of the show and someone who has been a guest several times, MSP Ivan McKee. Before that however, we've someone getting Farage telt, and after that we've got, just for the change of it, someone saying Scotland won't have any problems getting into the EU at all. He spoke about what I outlined above, and also responded to some criticisms of the growth commission and gave an idea of the thinking behind it. You may or may not agree with everything that is in it (I don't, and some of the audience members at the talk didn't agree either), but it is useful to hear the rationale behind it. The 177th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast has quite a varied menu. What is the UK govt spending millions on telling citizens living abroad? Do (Labour) MPs bother to read things before voting for them? There's also a No to Yes convert, some speeches from the recent march in Edinburgh, a confused person and more. And is one of the most famous Scots changing his mind? Hope you enjoy. https://twitter.com/mgreenwell https://www.facebook.com/TheScottishIndependencePodcast http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/…

The Scottish Independence Podcast

The 175th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast is a short talk given by Craig Dalzell showing, amongst other things, how distorted the GERS figures can be, some of the immediate savings an independent Scotland would make, and some of the instant bumps in revenue it would have. In case that wasn't clear above, that is when we are independent, not now. Hope you enjoy. The 174th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast is just a little teaser and a way of saying the podcast will be back for a little summer season and hopefully beyond. Iquote-because-things-are-the-way-they-are-things-will-not-stay-the-way-they-are-bertolt-brecht-23275.jpgn this one we’ve got something on the new cretin/b*stard (delete according to your mood) that has taken over as Prime Minister, there’s a little blast from the past, a live reaction to that thing on Channel 5 and finally the headline guest. Hope you enjoy.…
"I think if you had got a group of mysogynists in a room and said 'guys, how can we make this system work for men and not for women?', they wouldn't have come up with too many other ideas than what is already in place". The 173rd episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast is the much talked about report by the UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, talking about the UK. It's so important I was going to just read the whole thing out and put that out as a podcast but fortunately for me there was a presentation and a Q&A, and here it is. Hope you enjoy. He has also authored a number of books exposing various levels of skulduggery and/or incompetence at Whitehall. This episode comes from a recent talk he gave in which he goes into those things, but also why he now resides in Scotland, why he loves it, and why he supports Scottish Independence. Hope you enjoy. The 171st episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast is mostly a speech by Dr Philippa Whitford (a previous guest on the show). I'm sure you do, but just in case you didn't know, Dr Whitford MP is an SNP MP but before her time in politics she was a consultant breast surgeon, one who also worked as part of UN mission in Gaza and even a couple of years ago went to the West Bank to operare on four women suffering from Breast Cancer. The speech, principally about the Scottish Health service, was at Clermiston and is reproduced here courtesy of Independence Live. At the end of the speech I left the Q & A section in because most of the questions from the floor were, I imagine, exactly the ones the majority of listeners to this podcast would have asked, and she also gave some good responses. Finally, before that main course of the podcast begins, I put in a little starter when it seemed, just for a second, that the BBC was going to go somewhere it never ever goes. Hope you enjoy. "I have devoted myself to the cause of the people. It is a good cause. It shall ultimately prevail. It shall finally triumph." – Thomas Muir’s speech from the dock, Edinburgh, August 1793. Courtesy of Phantom Power, the 169th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast features the Thomas Muir lecture for 2018, which was given by Gerda Stevenson with As well as being an actress and a musician, Gerda Stevenson is the author of Quines: Poems in tribute to women of Scotland and in the lecture you can find out which Scottish woman was an inspiration to Walt Whitman and Mary Shelley, and which Scottish woman is known in Serbia as "Our Mother from Scotland"? That and much more. First up however, is an introduction by Murray Armstrong, author of The Liberty Tree, who explains who Thomas Muir was, and why it is important to remember him. Hope you enjoy. The 168th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast is a mix of some recent things that you won't want to miss. Here you'll find a psychic that didn't seem to predict the consequences of telling a nation of people to go f*ck itself, or how much of an idiot she would like when she was doing it. There is also a good speech from Westminster which provides good and useful historical information on the history of Scottish home rule. However, given that the speech was delivered in Westminster, it was accompanied by quite a lot of petulant, ill-informed and childish nonsense that came from the government benches. Finally, which Tory MP seems to want a large number of Scottish people to commit suicide? I imagine that some of you reading this are saying "quite a few of them want that" to yourselves, which is possibly true, but one of them said it out loud in public. Hope you enjoy. The 167th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast is an interview with Craig Dalzell, Head of Policy and Research at the Common Weal. We had a chat about the usual rammy every time the GERS figures come out (sorry for the swear word that it forced out of me, there is only one in the episode) and then we talked about the new paper the Common Weal have produced How to Launch A Scottish Currency. The 166th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast features, amongst other things, an interview with Peter Swain of Pensioners for Independence (courtesy of Independence Live). You'll also find out why I was very tempted to call the episode "Archie, Archie, What's the Score?", even if part of that joke will only make sense if you were born before 1985. I also had to include Boris Johnson, or as he is known in Scotland, Bawjawz, trying to justify some of the worst Tory behaviour. As he does so, he is kind enough to show just how far removed from you and the rest of reality in the process. Finally, there's a semi-unrelated part relating to how the BBC will shut down certain discussions if you go off script. Hope you enjoy. We're back. Just a little reminder of why...
Around this time of year I usually try to put out something with some of the best bits of the year in a compilation. However, given the early birth of our son Cailean, I haven't had time to scour through the stuff I have saved to put that exact show together again this year. So instead, here is what I thought was the best of this year, along with two of the best of ANY year in the Scottish Independence movement. It's not all happy-smiley, but it is all excellent. Hope you enjoy. LINKS http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/ https://www.facebook.com/TheScottishIndependencePodcast https://twitter.com/mgreenwell…
The 163rd episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast is a thank you for some of the great moments that Scottish Labour leaders have given us in recent years. Today the new empty suit put himself right in the mix with the previous empty suits and dresses, and he is hardly in the job. Hope you enjoy. LINKS https://twitter.com/mgreenwell http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/ https://www.facebook.com/TheScottishIndependencePodcast…
The 162nd episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast is a quick run through of some of the things that Trump and the Tories have been up to. Some listeners may find the amount of Ruth Davidson in it upsetting, however, when she is in it, she is constistently making an arse of herself. She also says some terminological inexactitudes, seems to forget that welfare isn't a devolved matter and more. There is also someone making fun of Trump, but the problem with that is that whatever you say about him, he is easily able to outdo it with what he says himself. LINKS http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/ https://twitter.com/mgreenwell https://www.facebook.com/TheScottishIndependencePodcast…
"We hereby constitute the Catalan Republic as an independent, sovereign, legal, democratic, socially-conscious state"
I noticed that the only people I hadn't had on the show among the conveners and voting organisations were Elaine C. Smith (I've tried - can't seem to get in touch with her), AyeScotland, Christians For Independence and Pensioners for Independence. I then immediately tweeted out asking if any of those organisations would like to come on the show for a talk about independence. The first I managed to organise something with (and I'll be working on the others shortly) were Christians for Independence. I'm not a religious man myself so I thought it would be interesting to hear their perspective and, as the guest, Dave Thompson - former SNP MSP and convener of the group, pointed out in the show, over 400,000 people regularly attend churches in Scotland every week so is this a demographic the indy movement can afford to ignore? So here is the 161st episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast with Dave Thompson of Christians for independence... Hope you enjoy. The 160th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast is an interview with Ian Hamilton QC, probably most know for going down to London with some friends and /taking back/stealing/repatriating/borrowing (delete as you wish) The Stone of Destiny/Scone. I have always wanted to have him on the show but unfortunately it wasn't me that got to interview him, it was instead Mike Small of Bella Caledonia (Bella also has a fundraiser), who has allowed me to make it up into an episode here. We get some great details on the story of the taking of stone and about the independence movement and its history. Hope you enjoy. The 159th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast features a talk given at the Edinburgh SNP Club last night by Colin Fox of the SSP. Colin always speaks well and this time was no different. "In the case of Brexit, I heard assurances throughout the course of the mission and yesterday at the human rights council from the government that Brexit would not lower protection from environmental threats. However, I also heard, or actually did not hear any clear assurances of how that would be the case. There have been statements from members of government saying that existing laws will be maintained WHEREVER PRACTICAL AND DESIRABLE, which I find very worrying." The 158th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast features a talk given at the UN by Baskut Tuncak. The report was about the UK and the quote I put above is possible the least damning thing he said, not the most. Human rights abuses, toxic waste, pollution, brexit, poisoning of children in the UK and abroad, agreements with dodgy overseas partners and more, this is a strong indicator of just how dysfunctional, intransigent and even nasty the British state can be. We're back! The 156th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast features the Thomas Muir lecture for 2017, which was given by Tommy Sheppard MP (who has also been on the show himself). Hope you enjoy.
It's good to give time to your opponents, , so for the 155th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast I've decided to cover this election broadcast by the Scottish Conservatives.
At the moment there isn't really enough talk about choices. Everything is being presented as either a future in Brexit UK (with all the lack of choices that entails), or an independent future in the EU. However there are more options than that available. If one looks to Scandinavia it is possible to see many different types of engagement and activity with Europe, from full membership and trying to change things from within, to various kinds of halfway house. In this talk presented here in the 154th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast, Lesley Riddoch outlines the options, and there are many of them that are appealing. Hope you enjoy. For the 152nd episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I’ve pulled together some of the recent notable comments by some pro-indy folks and by some unionists. The Tories seem to want to deny everything, some people are trying to ramp up the hysteria and others are trying to calm it all down. In the middle of it all Gordon Brown made another intervention, and then went away again without anyone noticing. Apart from that, the BBC edited Nicola Sturgeon rather sneakily, and there are two comments, both radically different in tone, from interested parties south of the border. Hope you enjoy. For the 151st episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I managed to get Adam Ramsay back on the line after a failed recording a couple of months back. Adam is a writer and activist and is the co-editor of Open Democracy. We talked about the wider context in which the argument over the timing of the second independence referendum is being played out in. We also spoke about the hysterical reactions of some unionist commentators - why are they so furious and how should we react to it. Hope you enjoy. It's the 150th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast and the 250th podcast I have put together that is about Scottish Independence in some way, so it's a double sort of anniversary. I hope you've been enjoying them. This time we are back to the interviews and in this universal moment of "what the hell is going on?" I spoke to Pat Kane, who I'm sure doesn't need any introduction other than to say he isn't the ice-hockey player that comes up if you search Pat Kane on google. We spoke about the the events of this week regarding the new independence referendum, how we are going to need to campaign, what new allies might come along to the party, what is likely to be against us and how we can fight it. A recent episode of the Lesley Riddoch podcast mentioned a couple of things regarding what's going to happen to fishing and agriculture in Scotland post-brexit. I felt what they were talking about was so important that we should go straight to the horse's mouth, and then to the horses a***s (Mundell & Farage). So for the 149th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I've pulled together the relevant comments and something fishy does indeed seem to be going on. Hope you enjoy. I had just put together and mastered episode 148 of the Scottish Independence Podcast before Sturgeon announced that we're going for Indyref 2, so it doesn't have any of that in it. I hope you'll still find it funny and/or infuriating though. Hope you enjoy. Due to a large quantity of people I'm going to interview soon being on holiday, just to keep things ticking over, episode 147 of the Scottish Independence Podcast is a few interesting clips pulled from here and there that you may have missed. First of all, a huge thank you to all of you who donated in our little fundraiser. You've secured the podcast for another year and we're very grateful. Episode 146 of the Scottish Independence Podcast continues the series of talks given at the recent Scottish Independence Convention and has a couple of little bonuses thrown in too. There are another two talks featured. The first was given by Lesley Orr of Women For Indy, and the second by Patrick Harvie, and this was his speech to round off the conference. Before we get to those however, there is a little excerpt of a talk given by Craig Murray, in which he explains we he thinks for Indyref 2 we need to get international observers. Hope you enjoy. Episode 143 of the Scottish Independence Podcast is a talk given by Richard Walker (interviewed in episode 135) at the recent Scottish Independence Convention. Richard is now the consulting editor of The National, but was also involved in the formation of that paper and the decision made at the Sunday Herald to begin openly supporting Scottish independence. In this talk Richard talks about the relationship between the Scottish Independence Movement and the Scottish mainstream media. Episode 142 of the Scottish Independence Podcast is a talk given by Dr Craig Dalzell (interviewed in episode 134) at the recent Scottish Independence Convention. Craig's talk was with regard to who did and didn't vote for independence last time round, how the picture has changed since then and what sort of strategies we should be looking at to get us over the 50% line. It's a very important listen, and thanks to Craig and to the good people at Independence Live for letting me reproduce it here. For the 14oth episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I invited journalist, vlogger and self-confessed foreign policy obsessive Robert Somynne to come on the show. Did you know that it isn't only Scotland that has "the cringe"? They have it in other places too, it just goes by a different name. For the 139th (sort of) episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Billy Kay, and the above is only one of the subjects we talked about. Billy has for years been writing, broadcasting and producing material on Scottish Culture and Scots language, for the BBC and internationally, and is often to be seen giving talks around the country. He also currently has a show you can listen to on the iplayer... Scotland's Black History. I asked him to come on because he is one of the best qualified people to talk about the importance of building confidence in Scottish culture, and how that plays into the campaign for Scottish Indepence. At the end of the episode there is also a little Robert-the-Brucie bonus, which regards this. Hope you enjoy. For the 137th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast, I didn't speak to anyone. It is instead one of those episodes where I am bringing you a bit of an interview by and with someone else because I think it is of importance and should be heard. That someone else happens to be Manfred Weber, head of the largest group in the European Parliament. When pressed on Brexit by BBC Hardtalk, he took a fairly strong line, best summed up by the title of this episode. He also had a few words about Scotland and the levels of (dis)organisation and (lack of) direction being shown the UK government. Hope you enjoy. For the 136th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast, I spoke with Robin McAlpine. Robin is a political strategist and the Director of the Common Weal. In the interview he doesn't waste any time getting on to what the thinks Yes supporters ought to be getting on with, and there is certainly a lot to chew on in interview. We talked about both logistics and strategy and how they are both equally important. We also spoke of what messages we need to be sending out and how to react to the inevitable negative tactics we will face from the unionist side in the next referendum. Hope you enjoy. For the 135th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast, I spoke with Richard Walker. Richard is now the consulting editor of The National, but was also involved in the formation of that paper and the decision made at the Sunday Herald to begin openly supporting Scottish independence. We talked about those decisions and why they were made, and how The National has been getting on. As well as that, we tried to get our heads around some of the unusual media appointments that have been made recently, and what could or should be done about the media in Scotland more generally. And of course, I asked Richard why he supports Independence for Scotland. Hope you enjoy. The Scottish Independence Podcast

For the 134th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast, I spoke with Dr Craig Calzell. Craig recently wrote a paper outlining the possible currency options for an independent Scotland. This is important work because an aspect of the Yes side that was much criticised during and after the 2014 referendum was the perceived lack of a strategy on what to do about currency. I say "perceived" because much of it came down to perception, not fact. We talked about why the 2014 plan may or may not have been right at the time, but wouldn't be the correct strategy for indyref 2. Would the Euro work? Scottish Pound? A crypto-currency? We also talked about what the hell a crypto-currency actually is. And of course, I asked Craig why he supports Independence for Scotland. Hope you enjoy. "The next referendum will be won in the years from now forward, rather than the months running up to it." - Tommy Sheppard For the 133rd episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast, I spoke with Tommy Sheppard, MP for Edinburgh East. Tommy has been involved in politics in Scotland and the UK for a number of years in a number of different ways and as I'm sure you all know, is now standing to become the Deputy Leader of the SNP. We talked about Tommy's earlier political activities and how he arrived at where he is now. We also got on to what, if elected (or even if not), he would like to see change within the SNP. Finally, as ever with a first-time guest, I asked Tommy why he personally supports Scottish Independence. Hope you enjoy. For the 132nd episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast, I got in touch with Danny McGregor. Danny is a member of the Scottish Greens and is campaigning for Indyref 2. He also recently wrote an article for Bella Caledonia in which he talked about the various possibilities for the timing of the second independence referendum. There are those that think we have to seize the moment of uncertainty that exists now. Others suggest that we have to wait until the polls are steadily showing a large lead for yes. These are difficult options to juggle, and they were the main focus of our discussion. Also, if you remember episode 129 in which I interviewed lots of people at the March for Indy, I found some interviews that were accidentally not included in that special episode (they were in a different folder), and wanted to put them on one of the shows, so they are in this one. Those interviews include one Bob Duncan, who you may know from BBC Scotlandshire. Hope you enjoy. For the 131st episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast, I spoke with Sharon Dolan-Powers, who I suspect most of you will know by another, or indeed by one of her projects. Sharon is not a native Scot, but came to the country and got involved in politics on the Yes side of the Indy debate. We talked about those decisions and her reasons for them. We also discussed disability issues in the UK and Scotland as, due to family circumstances and her work, she has a good knowledge of the subject. Furthermore, as someone not from Scotland originally, she provides an interesting perspective on the Scottish cringeFinally, and at the risk of giving away where she comes from, we had a wee natter about Trump. For the 130th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast, I went along to the Glasgow office of the Common Space. I tried to find out how the project got started, who works there, how they work and their plans for the future. I spoke with Angela Haggerty, Ben Wray, Aidan McCrae, Stuart Rodger, Alice Muir, Maxine Blaine (who definitely isn't Robin McAlpine) and Tiffany Kane. Listening to these conversations, I think you'll get a feel for who is working there and their motivations. Those motivations and ambitions are journalistic, political, economic, technological and others. Hope you enjoy...…
For the 129th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast, I went along to the March For Indy in Glasgow on Saturday 30th July. Somewhere north of 5000 people walked from the Botanic Gardens in Glasgow to George Square, where there were stalls, speeches and an appearance from Bikers for Indy. A fair few of them went to the pub afterwards too. As I was walking along, I took the opportunity to ask the people marching why they had decided to come along for the day, and this podcast contains those answers. As well as the many people that I didn't have time to swap details with, the podcast includes contributions from Veterans for Indy, Yes Midlothian, Simone Charlesworth, Robert Sommyne, Paul Kavanagh, CND Scotland, English Scots for Yes and Angela Haggerty. These podcasts are independently minded and independently funded, you can help to keep them going by making a donation.…
For the 128th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast, I went to Wee Ginger Dug Mansions to speak with the writer that also happens to live there, Paul Kavanagh. Paul has been one of the most insightful, strident and funniest people writing about the Scottish Independence debate for a number of years. He started this at his blog but now writes for The National newspaper and in other places too. We talked about why Paul thinks that even in this moment of general stramash, the time to start campaigning is now. Paul lived in Spain for a number of years and has some knowledge of the political situation there and explained why Spain, contrary to the reports we hear, will not stop an Independent Scotland entering the EU, and is in fact making conciliatory noises about it. We also got onto how and when Indyref 2 is going to arrive. All that and more, hope you enjoy. As a final aside, this episode also features a new quiet voice form introduction, given that at the moment of recording it (10 minutes ago), I am/was staying with a friend and I didn't want to wake his kids up.…

What do you know about the 45? Not the 45% of people who voted yes, I mean the events of 1745. We've almost been conditioned to believe that a gang of highlanders/catholics (referred to as Bare-arsed Banditti) were led on a fools' errand by an effete Italian buffoon and that the whole thing ended in a sort of Scottish civil war at Culloden. As happens so often in history, the well-worn narrative that we all know doesn't really get to the heart of the matter. To get a better picture of the events of 1745 I spoke with Maggie Craig, who is the author of two books on the subject. Firstly she wrote Damn Rebel Bitches, about the women of the 45, and then she followed that up with Bare-arsed Banditti, about the men of the 45. I think after this half hour you'll have changed your views on those events. We all remember the people we met, campaigned, and often made friends with during the referendum campaign. However, were the people we met representative of the campaigners as a whole? Who were they all? If the Telegraph were to be believed then the whole campaign was just that one muscular guy in a kilt with his top off, as that seemed to be the only photo they used for the entire process. Was that really the case? Dr Iain Black of Heriot-Watt University, and also of Yes Edinburgh North & Leith, has conducted research with almost 1000 people who campaigned in the referendum to find out not just who the people were (age, gender, class, ethnicity), but also what people did and why they did it. Furthermore, which groups enjoyed it more? Who did people think were more effective - local groups or the official Yes campaign? The results of the study give some great insights into these questions and more. Hope you enjoy it...…
For the 125th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast on Monday past I spoke with the filmmaker known to us all only as Phantom Power. His films are definitely some of the best independently produced content out there and include The Bigger The Lie with Prof John Robertson, which documents BBC bias in the run up the referendum, The Gallery of Rogues - The Art of Satire in the Scottish Independence Referendum with Greg Moodie, and there are many more on his channel, including one with a certain podcaster person. For the 124th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast on Monday past I spoke with Simone Charlesworth. Simone blogs at Mewsing Out Loud. https://mewsingoutloud.wordpress.com/posts/ We talked about her experience coming up from England to Scotland and trying to get up to speed with Scottish politics as quickly as possible. After she got up to speed, she got involved in things on the Yes side. Simone also talked about how working with Labour councils down south may or may not differ greatly from those you find in Scotland. She has a very enlightening point (actually a few) about why she feels the exact opposite of the cringe. How would someone who takes an interest in politics describe the differences between the media in England and that in Scotland? Finally, Simone also had a brilliant line about Jim Murphy, and I managed to sneak in two lines from comedy shows. Bonus points to any listener who catches them.. Hope you enjoy... For the 123rd episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Craig Murray. Craig is a former UK Ambassador to Uzbekistan, a post which he resigned in protest over what he saw as the collusion of the UK government in torture. In his career he has also held Foreign Office positions in the EU and Africa, and wrote Murder In Samarkand. He is now a human rights campaigner and also campaigned very vocally for a Yes vote in the Scottish Independence Referendum. Now that the referendum has passed, Craig feels no one is making the case for independence forcefully enough, and that was the main focus of our discussion, but we also took in the wider scene around the world. Hope you enjoy……
For the 122nd episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I invited writer, poet, teacher and activist Robert Somynne to come on and talk about his experience of coming up from down south and getting involved in the referendum campaign...on the Yes side. We also talked about how the Indyref may have shaken things up in a way that the current Holyrood election might not, about the future prospects for Indy, the EU ref, how important cultural confidence is for Scotland, the Trump situation and more. As well as finding out the inspiration for the new site and what goes into making the animations, we also chatted about some of the people around the Scottish political scene that ensure that a satirist like Shaun never has much trouble finding material. Hope you enjoy……
For the 120th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I invited Jack Foster, one of the filmmakers behind the documentary Scotland Yet, and in more recent times one of the organisers of NewsShaft to come on and talk about the beginning and unfortunate demise of the NewsShaft project. We also discussed some of the things that go into producing alternative media that sometimes go unseen. Another topic we got into is the current state of both mainstream and alternative media in Scotland. Should the various alternative media sources in Scotland help each other more, or is it just a nice sounding idea that can't really go anywhere? And what to make of some of the more hysterical stories that are showing up at the moment? There is all that and more... For the 117th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I invited Pat Kane, Kathleen Caskie of Women For Indy and journalist James Maxwell to come on and have a chat about some of the major events of 2015. We managed to get through a fair few, including the difficult year experienced by the Labour party in Scotland and the UK, the House of Lords, the continuing rise of the SNP, the "delivery" of the vow, Corbyn, Sturgeon, Indyref 2 and much more. We also included a look at some newcomers on the scene, specifically the RISE coalition, The Ferret, The National and Common Space. And as we unfortunately lost two major figures on the Scottish scene in 2015, William McIlvanney and Ian Bell, we also discussed what sort of a hole will be left by their absence. To finish up on a lighter note we had a holiday season quiz, True or Foulkes. Hope you enjoy……
For the 116th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Craig Paterson from RISE. We talked about the motivation behind the RISE movement, what they realistically hope to achieve over the long-term and how they hope to provide a real left alternative in Scottish politics. We also got on to general scene in Scottish politics at the moment, the woes of the Labour party, the prospective make-up of the next Scottish parliament and, unfortunately, we talked about Willie Rennie for some as yet uknown reason. In the latter part of the discussion we had a look at something that decent people of any colour in Scottish politics should be worried about, which is Dungavel Detention Centre (or if you prefer, prison for people who haven't done anything wrong). All that and more in the new episode. Hope you enjoy……
For the 115th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Jordan Daly and Liam Stevenson from the TIE Campaign. The campaign started in June, and they've already been in to The Scottish Parliament and what they had to say met with support from all corners. Jordan recounts a very moving personal story and some alarming statistics and Liam explains why, even as someone who is not a part of the LGBT community himself, he decided to get involved in the campaign. "The Land Reform Bill we have in front of us at the moment is just a start, and a pretty tentative one at that. It needs beefed up." - Lesley Riddoch When it comes to land ownership and distribution it must be said that Scotland is an international oddball. A number of factors have contributed to the unusual situation we find ourselves in and in this episode I spoke with Lesley Riddoch about what those are and what can be done about the situation, both in the countryside and in the cities. Furthermore, is the Scottish Government in a compromised position or does the it lack the power, or indeed, the will. How do the local and city councils come into the story? And when I am in the boards my words will be a prophecy. They will return, the stock of the crofters Who were driven over the sea. And the aristocratic 'beggars' will be routed as they (the crofters) were. Deer and sheep will be carted away and the glens will be tilled; A time of sowing and a time of reaping, and a time to reward the robbers. And the cold ruined houses will be built up by our kin Over the years I have had many conversations in which there has been the complaint that large chunks of Scottish history, both events and people, have been left out of our education. I therefore thought that, in addition to our other shows, it was about time that some of these stories and people should get some more publicity, and so here is the second in a new series of podcasts- Scotland’s Missing Histories. For the second episode I spoke with author Liz MacRae Shaw about the life of a woman so remarkable that they named her several times - Mairi Mhor nan Oran, Mairi Mhor, Big Mary of the Songs, Mary MacPherson and others. Liz wrote a biography of a woman who lived through and fought against, and then to reverse the highland clearances. Mary also went to prison despite very possibly being innocent, and did something that Beyoncè et al tend to do these days long before it was normal, Mhairi's was not a normal life. Over the years I have had many conversations in which there has been the complaint that large chunks of Scottish history, both events and people, have been left out of our education. I therefore thought that it was about time that some of these stories and people should get some more publicity, and so here is the first in a new series - Scotland's Missing Histories. For the first episode I am throwing you all right in at the deep end too, with the story of James Connolly, one of Scotland and Ireland's most thoroughgoing revolutionaries. Connolly, born in Edinburgh, was involved in worker's and revolutionary movements in Scotland, Ireland and the USA and there are enough similarities that it is possible to begin drawing comparisons with Thomas Paine. I asked Jim Slaven of the James Connolly Society to take us through the story of his life, and give his opinion on why the life and writings of James Connolly are still relevant today. Who or what would you like to hear about in this series? Let me know and I will try to put a show together.…
For the 112th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with former MP, activist and writer Jim Sillars, and I am sure I didn't really need to write that little biography there. We spoke about his new book In Place Of Failure - why did he feel it needed to be written? Almost immeditately we got into the premise of the book, what did we do wrong during the referendum, and going forward, what can we do to right those wrongs the next time around? This included discussions on how the Yes movement should evolve, and suggestions on what to do about currency, the EU and the media. We also talked about when that next time round might come up and the fact that the older generations in Scottish society were, and still are, the most likely to support the continuation of the Union. What can be done about that? Finally, as ever, I asked Jim his reasons for supporting Scottish Independence. Hope you enjoy……
"Good Morning Scotland were almost shameless". It has rightly been mentioned in some quarters that before we proceed to indyref 2, the Yes side are going to have to seriously look at what could have been different in indyref 1, and look at how to improve or counteract. In that spirit then I spoke to Professor John Robertson about the book he has written focusing on the media coverage of the referendum and the report on this year's general election. You can download the book here - propagandascotlandreferendum2014 and the election report here - Propaganda or Professionalism We talked about how bias can be caused by different factors and how it can manifest itself in different ways, John explained why he thinks devolving the BBC is not perhaps the solution we are hoping for and, as you can see above, we had a few words about Good Morning Scotland. Hope you enjoy……
For the 110th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Neil Davidson, an academic and writer, and Colin Fox, leader of the Scottish Socialist Party. It's a slightly different episode in that it is 2 discussions about the EU, both from a socialist perspective. One of the interviews makes the left wing case for leaving the EU, and the other makes the left wing case for staying in the EU. These interviews were conducted a couple of months ago for the SSP podcast, who asked me to do a few interviews for them and I accepted (NB - as ever, the Scottish Independence Podcast is unaligned with any party or group and regular listeners will know we regularly feature SNP, SSP, GREENS, Labour for Indy, Libdems for Indy and all sorts of unaligned people and independent groups). The reason for doing these interviews is that in the coming months we are going to hear a lot about the merits and problems of the EU, but they are mostly going to come from rightwing perspectives - this is why it is important to start giving some perspectives from the other side of the argument early. Hope you enjoy… If you'd like to help the podcasts please go to www.michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com and make a donation.…
For the 109th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Dr Iain Black of Heriot-University and also of Yes Edinburgh North & Leith. Iain has been conducting some research which you can take part in online either on Bella Caledonia or at Common Space. http://bellacaledonia.org.uk/2015/06/29/yes-campaign-survey/ https://commonspace.scot/articles/1823/professor-launches-online-study-into-motivations-of-scottish-independence-activist-groups As the page on Bella Caledonia says, the research is... "an academic survey to capture who took part in the Yes campaign, what they did and why they took part. The results will be published widely and shared with the main Yes supporting groups to help them understand their volunteers and to understand who changed politics in Scotland." Our conversation took in the academic work, his personal feelings on the matter of Scottish Independence and how he keeps the two things separate. Oh and he passed up an open goal as well, but you'll have to listen to find out what that was. Hope you enjoy… http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/…
For the 108th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I checked in again with Ivan Mckee. Moodie. Ivan has been down in Westminster to help some of his SNP colleagues and since he has been down there he has had the time to have a look at the place and has some interesting observations on what goes on down there. More specifically, is the place fit for purpose as a building, does an obsession with procedure get in the way of good governance, what's the most useless way you can think of to use an ipad and more. Oh and he also had a little announcement to make... Hope you enjoy……
For the 107th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Chris Cairns & Greg Moodie. Chris and Greg have come to prominence in recent years with their cartoons and illustrations depicting the various actors and their activities on the Scottish and UK political stages, and you'll probably have seen their work on Wings Over Scotland, Bella Caledonia and many other places. I asked them both if they became politicised before beginning their artwork or if it was the other way round. We talked about where the inspiration for the work comes from and whether it is fair to kick someone when they are down. Chris had something to say about the downplaying of the electoral earthquake that hit us a month or so ago too. We also threw in something about Steve Bell. Finally, as usual, I asked them why they support Scottish Independence. Hope you enjoy……
For the 106th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Allan Grogan. Allan was the founding member of Labour for Indy, a campaign group during the referendum which was in an almost unique position of campaigning against the policy of its own party's stated position. We talked about that and the accusations that were levelled at the group that they were an SNP front. We also talked about where the Labour Party can now go from the difficult position they find themselves in. Alan explained his reasons for resigning from Labour and joining the SSP too. Near the end we got on to Indyref 2 - when, if, how and what? https://twitter.com/allangrogan http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/ https://twitter.com/mgreenwell…
Where to for the Labour branch office in Scotland and down south? What, if anything, will the Tories give to Scotland? Do we need to bother talking about the libdems? These were just some of the questions we got onto it, and I resisted the temptation to say something unspeakable about Ian Davidson, though I did say something about him. As a little aside, I'll be going back to the Scottish Independence Podcast format very soon, so watch out for those. Hope you enjoy……
In what podcast can you get Errol Brown, St Enoch's, Nick Clegg and the Institute for Fiscal Studies? This one. Ivan and I give a last wee run round the stories before the polls open, and William makes the nonsense drummed up by someone (pending investigation) in Glasgow yesterday, seem exactly what it was.…

In this episode Ivan and I talked about Ed Miliband's monorail, sorry, monoLITH, and then ran through what people seem to be up to in order to create news stories today. William Duguid has his say on Full Fiscal Autonomy too.
In this episode Ivan and I talked about what mechanisms are in place to actually get a government going in the event that there is no majority for any party and William Duguid opines on the by turns infuriating or slightly unsettling spectacle that is First Minister's Questions.

The Scottish Independence Podcast

This time Ivan and I did a little Saturday review show. Where are we at in the campaign? Where's it going to go from here? Is Project Fear 2 going to work? We also have William Duguid on the latest barkings of the Milibeing and the concept that Scotland was encouraged to lead, and not leave, the united (sic) kingdom (capitals deliberately not used).…

This time I spoke with Kathleen Caskie on the theme that we're hearing a lot lately, namely that it is somehow illegitimate that SNP MPs (or Plaid for that matter) should be involved in government business in Westminster.
In this episode I speak with Dr Morag Kerr. Morag is a veterinary surgeon and also the author of Adequately Explained By Stupidity, a book about the Lockerbie disaster. We talked about Cameron's plan to hold a free vote on legalising hunting and more generally about the case against hunting, and for better animal welfare policies.…
In this episode I spoke to Robin McAlpine about the minimum wage and the living wage. Why aren't they the same thing? What are the differences between the various parties on these issues. More importantly, is there a better way to look at the while issue? William Duguid has excelled himself again too. This time he's keeping us all up to date on the latest from the Ministry of Patronising Pish.…

In this episode Ivan and I had a chat about TTIP. What are the big problems with it, why is it so secretive and why don't the coalition government and that other neoliberal party seem to want to use some of the veto powers that are rumoured to be in there? William Duguid's Terminalogical Inexactitude of the day this time features the Tories getting caught out on one yesterday.…
This time I was joined by writer, tutor, campaigner, ex-cop & more than I can put here, Karen Campbell. We talked about a recent statistic showing that a much higher percentage of women in Scotland, as compared to England are likely to vote. Why would that be so? Also, we talked about the broader situation and why Scotland is not "going back in the box".…

#DollGate and now the #WorstCrisisSinceTheAbdication. It appears that Project Fear has morphed into Project Hysteria, this was our topic today. Silliness apart, who is this all aimed at, what does it say about Old V New media and is it likely to have much of an effect?

In this episode I was joined by Gillian Martin from Women for Independence. We talked about a story that pro-union parties are fond of repeating (and sticking on leaflets), specifically that under the SNP college places have fallen. However, as she pointed out in her blog, the truth is somewhat different from the soundbites. We also talked about the importance of maintaining free higher education in Scotland or indeed any other society.…

As we get closer to the election it appears that project fear is on its way back, but this time ... it's England. Yes, the Tories are trying to hard to scare the living daylights out of the English voters in order to stop them voting Labour. Ivan and I had a chat about if it's likely to work or not. Also, William Duguid speaks of the Libdems and what to make of their promises - there's a meal ticket in there somewhere.…

This time Ivan and I got round to SNP economic policy in a UK election. How does it differ from that of the main parties and what influence could it have. In today's episode I am joined by Mark Frankland, writer. Neither Mark nor myself are members of any party, which frees us up to discuss some matters that others may not be free to discuss. And even though the SNP didn't discuss the prospect of IndyRef 2 in their manifesto, and Sturgeon said she wasn't planning one, it didn't stop some of the unionist parties from having a go on the matter. This has of course predictably led to the very funny #NotRuledOutByTheSNP hashtag on twitter. We discussed if the SNP are being too cautious on the matter, what could be the triggers for a new referendum and what's so bad about asking for some more democracy anyway?…

Why not come on a lazy train ride this Sunday. Well, I assume most of you would like to, but think it is just too bloody expensive. Why should that be? What can be done about it? For the 87th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast the guest was Sergio Casci. Sergio was a journalist for many years but is now a screenwriter, writing things such as American Cousins, River City, and much more. Aside from that, he's been very active in the Independence Debate. We talked firstly however, about the experience of the Italian community in Scotland, which is bigger than you might think, before we got down to the gritty business of the referendum itself. For the 86th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast the guest was Stephen Paton. You've probably been watching Stephen's Indyref Weekly series, and if you haven't I'd suggest you start. Reaching 1000s with every episode, they are well worth the watch. We talked about Stephen's project and had a more general natter on indyref, the Commonwealth Games and much more. "Blossom is an account of Scotland at the grassroots through the stories of people I've had the good fortune to know – the most stubborn, talented and resilient people on the planet. They've had to be. Some have transformed their parts of Scotland. Some have tried and failed. But all have something in common – they know what it takes for Scotland to blossom. We should know too." The ScotIndyBook series features audio book versions, full books or selected pieces, fiction and non-fiction, of some of the books being written about the independence referendum, or using it as a theme. All the books in this series have been given by the kind permissions of their authors. This time it is part of Blossom, by Lesley Riddoch (who was also on the other podcast just before christmas). I'm sure you know who Lesley is but in case you aren't sure... An honours degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, president of the student union in 1981, founded and directed a feminist magazine known as Harpies and Quines, contributing editor of the Sunday Herald and assistant editor of The Scotsman. She was editor of a special one-off edition of The Scotsman known as The Scotswoman produced by the paper's female staff. Writing columns for The Sunday Post, The Scotsman, and occasionally The Guardian, shortlisted for the Orwell prize. There are so many Independence and Yes events going on around the country now that it is very hard to keep track of them. MP3s and youtube videos are going up all the time. The 85th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast is the third in a series of podcasts under the title Out & About featuring some of the best ones to give you the chance to hear them without searching too far. Each one will have different speakers, from independent independents, people in the different parties, people in the groups you find at these events and, well, people who’ve had something excellent to say on the matter. In this third episode the contributions again come from a wide variety of sources. The first is writer and actor Julia Taudevin and is something a bit different from the majority of indyref material you're likely to listen to. The second is Tommy Sheppard, who isn't just a labour supporter who is now supporting a Yes vote, he is someone who was very high up in the party. The third is Patrick Harvie, leader of the Scottish Greens, who has been consistently great all the way through the debate. Last up is Carolyn Leckie explaining the importance of getting a Yes vote by women in Scotland, and the importance of a Yes vote for women Hope You Enjoy, and tell your friends, family and assorted quadrupeds……

The 83rd episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast is with Robin MacPherson, who seems to be a very busy man. He is Professor of Screen Media at Edinburgh Napier University, director of Screen Academy Scotland and of the Institute for Creative Industries at Edinburgh Napier. He makes documentaries, current affairs and drama including the BAFTA-nominated , The Butterfly Man. In 1997, he established Asylum Pictures, an independent production company whose films include the Scottish-BAFTA nominated documentary, Tree Fellers, and (as co-producer) the award-winning Fellini: I'm a born liar. Since 2008 he has led ENGAGE, an EU MEDIA-funded collaboration with the Irish, Estonian and Finnish national film schools. In 2010 he was appointed by the Scottish Government to the Board of Creative Scotland and in April 2011 he joined the Board of Creative Edinburgh. Oh and he blogs too. Frankly, I'm amazed he managed to find the time to come on, but he did, and we talked about the current situation with regard to the creative industries in Scotland. Is the union holding us back and how could independence improve things? Should Scotland have its own film studio? What would be the benefits and the drawbacks? We talked about the creative output that the referendum campaign itself has generated. Has there been anything inspiring? For the 45th episode of the For A' That podcast, Andrew and I were joined by Pat Kane, who I'm sure doesn't need the introduction, and by Michelle Thomson from Business for Scotland. Our first topic was a discussion about some of the themes that Robin McAlpine hinted at in this article http://bellacaledonia.org.uk/2014/06/19/yes-together/ . Put simply, are the Yes side being too nice? Apart from that, the media was the hot topic this week. With protests against BBC bias going on outside their Scottish headquarters, what do we actually expect a state broadcaster to be doing in such an event? Furthermore, in an independent Scotland shouldn't we be trying to organise the media with a different model and if so, what should it look like? Will the big debate with Salmond V TBA (To Be Affronted) ever happen? Who knows? However, we tackled this issue from another angle by asking, quite frankly, what would be the point? There's all that and more in the new episode. Hope you enjoy... The penultimate is our mystery man, that's all I'm saying. For the 81st episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Gillian Martin, otherwise known as Misssy M on twitter. Aside from her normal job in further education, Gillian is one of the main organisers/instigators of Aye Inspired. It's a touring exhibition of artworks inspired by the independence date and I asked how it got started and where it is going to be next. She's also been on the speaking tour and we talked about what it is like coming up against paid politicians and party hacks. Oh, and as it seems to be in fashion at the moment, we had a wee word about cybernats and cybernattery. For the 80th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with three of the good people at Generation Yes. Specifically they are Graeme West, Graeme Sneddon and Kirsten Thornton (given the double Graeme, we had to resort to Mr Sneddon and Mr West). We talked about how the campaign group got started and what its aims are, we also talked about what events they've got coming up. I asked what they thought the prospects for the Yes Generation will be with independence or if there is a No vote. We also talked about their funding drive and what they need the money for. Mark is an English writer and drugs worker who lives in Scotland and has every intention of voting Yes on September the 18th. He is also writing a novel with an independence referendum theme and serialising it on his website, free for readers. Not only this but he has also been active on the indyref speaking circuit, try this example out for size. Christopher is one the team that has been bringing some of the best and most talked about vids in the indyref campaign so far, and they're currently in the process of making a feature-length documentary about it. We talked about what stage they are at with the film and when and where we can expect to be seeing it. That moved us on to the importance of crowdfunding in the campaign. Everyone's favourite Gitmo Non-Closer stuck his oar in last week, so we had a natter about that. Will Scottish Independence deal cancer research a blow? The Express seemed to think so, we were less than convinced. Also, given the increasingly surrealist note of the No campaign, I decided to take the Yes side on a more surrealist journey, and therefore for some reason talked about aliens. There's all that and much more. Hope you enjoy…

In this episode we look at UKIP and their attitude to Scotland, as well as some of the more unusual declarations from some members or former members of that party. We will do short informative little pieces on the election matters that are being missed, evaded, obfuscated or terminalogically inexactituded in the normal election coverage. This is the 2nd episode, you can find the others here. This time we spoke of the rather rough day that Jim Murphy's had yesterday, mostly caused by this quote from Chuka Ummuna... "The leader of the Scottish Labour Party will not be in charge of the UK budget. The leader of our country, our next prime minister, Ed Miliband, will be in charge of the UK budget and he has just answered the question, when that was put to him - will there be any cuts over the course of this parliament not just in the first financial year, but in the following financial years? And he was absolutely clear - there will be the need for further consolidation and cuts throughout the rest of the parliament." So was Jim hung out to dry or was it just the head office getting the branch manager back in line? We also talked about the idea of No Detriment and the fact that the Independent ex UK nation of Ireland seems to be doing rather well at the moment. We will do short informative little pieces on the election matters that are being missed, evaded, obfuscated or terminalogically inexactituded in the normal election coverage. The aim is also to provide people with information they can use to help them make their minds up on the issues and/or use as they campaign on those issues. I'll be doing these with Ivan McKee, but we'll also have help from others along the way. In this first episode we (mostly) spoke about the concept that Jim Murphy, in this video in which it is completely impossible that the backdrop of doorknocking is a setup, seems to think is too complicated for you all to get your pretty little heads around, namely full fiscal autonomy. The 104th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast is a talk on the post-referendum economic situation, given by one of our previous guests, Ivan McKee . I'll also be interviewing Ivan soon for another episode, but before we get there, I think it'd be enlightening to have a listen to this first. Before the referendum Ivan toured the country with a presentation that managed to reach a lot of people. In this new talk, he rivisits some of that material but also adds much more and explains where he sees us now in the post-ref environment, and he also explains in which direction he thinks we ought to be travelling. Thanks to Independence Live for allowing me to reproduce the talk. For the 103rd episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Michael Gray who before and after the referendum has been involved in a number of projects that I am sure you are familiar with. These include National Collective, Business For Scotland, The National and The Common Weal. He is now working full-time with the Common Space. We talked about why the Common Space project was set up and where it intends to go. We also got onto some of the other projects he has been involved in and where they are going. And amongst other things, as a couple of Glaswegians, we had a word about how we felt about Glasgow City Council deciding to do what many people hope can be overturned with the steps in Buchanan Street, is it conspiracy or stupidity? You decide! Hope you enjoy……
For the 102nd episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Kathleen Caskie who is the co-coordinator of the Women For Independence Group. We started off on the worldwide political gamechanger that is/was Labour's pink bus. However, after that we got down to more serious matters such as the work that Women for Independence have been doing since their inception and what the future holds for them. We then spoke about more general matters including the surge, the upcoming general election and if the parliament should be 50/50 in terms of gender balance. In the middle of all that we got into the Cash for Access scandal and some of the other things going on at Westminster. We also had a look back at the Yes campaign and what its legacy will be. For the 101st episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Robin McAlpine of the Reid Foundation, The Common Weal and much more besides. We spoke about some of the ways in which the Common Weal project has moved forward since the referendum, and there is much of note in that. We also talked about why Robin feels some of these new directions are necessary. For the third Scottish Independence Podcast interview after the referendum, I spoke with Chief Executive of the Yes Scotland campaign, Blair Jenkins. We talked about the things he felt went well in the campaign and those that didn't go so well on the Yes side. The role of the media in the referendum process was, and still is, a major talking point and I asked Blair how he felt they had behaved. I also asked him how he felt about the No campaign and some of their more debatable methods. Finally, I asked him where he thinks the Yes movement is going to now. Hope you enjoy…
After a break the For A' That podcast is back. Andrew and I were joined for the first post-referendum episode by Gillian Martin and Doug Daniel. Up for discussion were what is becoming known as "The Surge", the prospects of the often mentioned Yes Alliance, new leaders and deputy leaders for the SNP and Scottish Labour, how much we all love Jim Murphy, the umpteenth promise of House of Lords reform and what (possibly) someone else buys when they go to the shops for Ed Miliband. I also had a couple of choice words about Dick Cheney. Hope you enjoy...…
For the second Scottish Independence Podcast interview after the referendum, I spoke with Professor John Robertson (who was also on the podcast about 7 months ago). The last time we spoke about his research into BBC bias in the referendum and his appearance at the Scottish Parliament (also featured here), so this time we moved on to the period surrounding the referendum and the barrage of Unionist propaganda, knowing or otherwise, in the last few days before the vote. We also talked about the reaction of the SNP with Salmond and Swinney both saying something about the BBC in recent days. But did they say too much, or not enough? Was the whole process fair? And if it wasn't fair, why and how? Apart from that, we talked about the explosion in membership for the pro-indy parties and where the Yes movement can go from here. To throw in a final teaser, why do Scottish academics often have to speak to Welshmen? There's that and more in the new episode. Hope you enjoy…
"When you say things like 'I'm a proud Scot', you've really got to think 'what is it I am proud of?'. Are you proud of Scotland as a nation, as a country, as everyone else understands understands a country to be in the whole world? Or are you proud of it as a sort of junior region of the UK?" For the 78th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Karen Campbell. Karen has written five novels: The Twilight Time, After the Fire, Shadowplay and Proof of Life and she has also recently become an active speaker on the Yes circuit, to much acclaim. This is an episode you don't want to miss. We talked about lots of things and I didn't miss the opportunity to ask an ex-policeman about the current policing situation in Scotland either. I'm not going to do any more spoilers other than the above. Hope you enjoy… LINKS http://www.karencampbell.co.uk/index.html http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/ https://twitter.com/writerkcampbell https://twitter.com/mgreenwell…
For the 77th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Karine Polwart. Karine is a folk singer, campaigns for the Yes campaign and is also a philosophy graduate. We talked about the cultural aspect of the indyref campaign and how it may or may not be a driving element in the campaign. We had a word about the kerfuffle when Karine wrote an article for the Scotsman a while back and we talked about the Bus Party tour she has been on. And finally of course, we talked about why Karine supports independence for Scotland. There's all that and much more. Hope you enjoy… LINKS http://www.karinepolwart.com/ http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/…
"Ultimately what we want is our own government promoting us at the top level, not as an afterthought and not as an add-on." For the 76th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Brandon Malone. Brandon is a solicitor, he is the Chairman of the Scottish Arbitration Centre, he is a co-director of the International Centre for Energy Arbitration, is a member of Business for Scotland and when he is not doing any of that, might be writing or campaigning for a Yes vote on September 18th. We spoke about how negotiations after a Yes vote might play out and the "we won't pre-negotiate" stance of the No camp. We also spoke about Business for Scotland and their effect on the campaign and about Brandon's reasons for supporting Scottish Independence. For the 74th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with someone a little further away from home than usual, specifically in Galicia. Pilar Fernandez. Pilar writes a blog called A ponte entre Galiza e Escocia // The bridge between Galiza and Scotland. She has also been working hard on a new campaign called Solidarity With Scotland, which describes itself thusly... "A few months ago, a friend in the USA asked what she could do to help the cause of Scottish independence. "Nothing much," was my reply, before going on to explain that this is a debate that has to be held within Scotland. However that is not the view of the UK Government, despite Cameron's protestations that he cannae debate Alex Salmond because he doesn't have a vote in September. But it turns out that there is something she can do after all. In January, the Sunday Herald published the news that the UK Foreign Office is heading a campaign to enlist support for Better Together in foreign countries. Wee Wullie Hague wants to hear from you if you have bad things to say about Scottish independence. According to the Herald, the Foreign Office has contacted the governments of China, Russia, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the 28 members of the EU in a desperate search for viagra to bolster the flaccid Project Fear." One of the things on the site is this letter, translated into many languages, which she is encouraging people to send to embassies around the world. Find out why and much more in the new episode. Hope you enjoy… P.S. She also translated her song for us... Entre nós (Between us) by Uxia (oo-shee-ah) A wee translation: Aqui vin, aqui cheguei, aqui me mandaron vir, I came here, I arrived here , someone told me to come here Aqui está o meu corazón se o queren recibir Here it is my heart if they want to receive it…
For the 42nd episode of the For A’ That podcast two returning guests joined Andrew and I. The first of those is Ivan McKee of Business for Scotland and the second was Ruaridh Waddell who is an Aid worker (usually to be found in Zambia, but not at the moment). Our first topic was the CBI. Who are the winners and losers coming out of the storm regarding their involvement in the Independence Referendum? Who could we get impartial information from if not them? Are there going to be some grey areas surrounding campaign funding? It would seem so, and Andrew outlined what he saw as some of the problems. You won't be getting your pensions in Indy Scotland, except for the fact that, as the letter shows, you will. Is the Sunday Herald coming out for Yes a big turning point in the campaign or much wahoo about nothing? You can find out where Cybernat control distributes its orders too. Oh and what's Rupert Murdoch got to do with chocolate? There is all that and more. For the 73rd episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Ash Regan-Denham. Ash is the parliamentary lobbyist for the Reid Foundation, works with Women For Indy and is also an activist for Yes Borders. We spoke about her work in all three of these areas and also about the larger international picture and how Independent Scotland could work its way through some of the international financial arrangements in place at the moment. For the 72nd episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast I didn't speak with anyone as in some of the episodes I like to bring you some of the recordings of the hundreds of Yes events going on around the country. This one comes from a Labour For Indy event that was held a couple of months back. The speakers were, in this order, Allan Grogan, Jeane Freeman, Bob Thomson, Alex Mosson, Deborah Waters and Denis Canavan, and the whole thing was hosted by Elaine C Smith. There's a lot in there. For the 71st episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Craig Murray. Craig is a former UK Ambassador to Uzbekistan, a post which he resigned in protest over what he saw as the collusion of the UK government in torture. In his career he has also held Foreign Office positions in the EU and Africa, and wrote Murder In Samarkand. He also supports Scottish Independence and apart from talking about why he supports it, we also talked about the Maritime boundary issue that could come up after independence. Blair and Dewar connived to move it hoping no one would notice., but will that realignment be allowed to stand? Craig has been involved in many maritime boundary negotiations, so he knows a thing or two on the subject. We also talked about the idea that Britain is a "force for good™" in the world. We weren't convinced. How will the negotiations go for Scotland entering the EU as an independent state? There's all this and much more. Hope you enjoy... "I think this is the first time in history that the Westminster parliament has had to justify it's existence. They've never had to actually make the case to the people of anywhere in the British Isles before that this is why we deserve to be your parliament, and they've really exposed themselves as being completely clueless." For the 70th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke to Paul Kavanagh, who is the man behind the dug in the fantastic Wee Ginger Dug blog ("Biting the hand of Project Fear"). Our conversation took in why he loves the No campaign, why he enjoyed Douglas Alexander being made to look like Jesus, and why languages are important, particularly in terms of cultural memory. We also spoke about the inspiration for the blog, how he found Scotland changed after a long time away and why he has been a supporter of Scottish Independence since he was a teenager. Apologies for the sound quality not being quite as good as usual, I've tried to patch it up as well as possible. Hope you enjoy… LINKS http://weegingerdug.wordpress.com/ http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/ https://twitter.com/mgreenwell…
For the 69th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast it's back to the parliament, with Joan McAlpine MSP as the guest. Being a member of the Scottish Parliament is however only one of Joan's activities as amongst other things she is also a journalist at The Daily Record, has written various books, blogs at Go Lassie Go, and was a speechwriter for Alex Salmond. We talked about the recent SNP conference and her speech there - are there parallels to be drawn between the bedroom tax and the poll tax? We talked about the media in general and her specific newspaper, and their effect on the campaign. Joan thinks certain things need to be placed in context. We also got onto the reasons why Joan supports independence for Scotland, and there's much more in there besides. The 68th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast comes from a recent yes event in Motherwell with thank to Independence Live, who are making a great job of filming these events). Scotland is full of Independence events at the moment, and the Yes campaign is reaching many many communities around Scotland. Obviously however, it is not possible for everyone to go to every meeting, and it is not possible for some to go to any meetings, so I think it is important to spread the ones that are recorded around as much as possible. In that spirit, mixed in with the interviews in the normal podcasts and For A' That series, I hope to be bringing you more podcasts of events around Scotland too. At this particular event, the speakers were firstly Robin McAlpine, in fine angry form. He was followed by Cat Boyd and finally Jim Sillars had the chance to explain his ideas without George Galloway repeating the same sentence at him ad infinitum. A few months ago, after I'd interviewed a couple of MSPs (John Finnie and Jean Urquhart), I asked them and their assistants if they would be able to put me in touch with Margo MacDonald or her assistant, and then maybe we could set something up. I got the contact for her assistant and it seemed she was willing to come on and give the show a try, but I should ask again a bit later on when she had more time. Unfortunately, we never got round to it before she passed away. However, what I've done here is to put together some audio of her speeches and various appearances throughout her career. They go from the fun, funny and flippant to the extremely serious end of the spectrum. Some of them are TV or radio interviews, some of them are her interventions in the Scottish Parliament and there are some other interesting snippets in there too. Regular listeners will know that the guest on the show chooses the tune. That not being possible, I did some digging around and it seems she liked country music, so I put some of that in too. Hope you enjoy……
For the 42nd episode of the For A’ That podcast Andrew and I were joined for the first time by Vonny Moyes who is the Arts Editor for The Skinny magazine and also wrote a marvellous article over at National Collective recently. Our returning guest this time was Gary Dunion, who, amongst a number of other things is the Communications Director for the Scottish Greens. The first thing we discussed was the passing of Margo MacDonald, and how the parliament may well be a much poorer place without her. We were lucky to have a number of different perspectives on this. Gary in particular had been working with her recently and had an interesting story to tell. From an interesting story to a frankly bizarre one. We're used to better together prophecies of financial doom or some such other thing, but George Robertson took it on himself to make a prediction of actual apocalyptic doom should Scotland go independent, with the Forces of Darkness being unleashed (artists rendition above). This forced us to bring our own big guns out and so we got to it. In fact we unleashed our dogs of war, with grave consequences for Andrew. Vonny had some interesting comments on the importance of language in the whole debate, and we also put our heads together to try and predict where the next scare story could possibly go - have they run out or have they used them all up too fast? There's much more besides in the latest episode, and I haven't even mentioned Douglas Adams in the introduction either. Hope you enjoy (and if you feel up to helping us along with our running costs you can pop us a donation too.) For the 66th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Alistair Davidson. Alistair runs a small think tank called the Centre for Technology and Society and will be writing the digital rights part of the Reid Foundation's Common Weal project. We spoke about the use of social media in the campaign so far but I suppose the juicier parts of the interview were those explaining what Snowden really means, as although Glenn Greenwald defended himself brilliantly in that famous interview, we didn't actually get any nearer to what was going on. We also discussed how an Independent Scotland could make itself safer in terms of digital security and also how it could do better for itself in the digital industry. Hope you enjoy… LINKS http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/ http://mohkohn.wordpress.com/ https://twitter.com/moh_kohn https://twitter.com/mgreenwell http://reidfoundation.org/ http://allofusfirst.org/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-moGtQFvsVU…
For the first Scottish Independence Podcast interview after the referendum, I spoke with former MSP, national co-spokesperson for the Scottish Socialist Party and member of the Yes Campaign, Colin Fox. We talked about what the Yes campaign achieved, and will achieve in future and how, despite the disappointment of the loss, it's only S.I.D. You can find out what S.I.D. is in the interview. Apart from that we had to talk about the Tory assault on human rights, why Labour™ (or the Red Tories™ if you prefer), are getting it in the neck and the BBC and their wonderfully impartial and not at all defend-the-status-quo-at-all-costs type coverage. We also got on to what a Yes alliance could do in the future. There's all that and much more. Hope you enjoy... Taking my lead from the No campaign, I've decided to give this new episode a misleading title. It isn't Angry Salmond from twitter, but rather you're actual Alex Salmond making a speech that was not televised or broadcast, shortly after he resigned. Amongst other things he promises to say what he really thinks about BP, the BBC and so on after he is no longer First Minister. I'd absolutely be interested in hearing that. It's definitely worth the listen... Hope you enjoy... LINKS http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/ https://twitter.com/mgreenwell https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siLtR1NoLio…

The Scottish Independence Podcast

We'll go again.
For the 94th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke to Philippa Whitford. Philippa is an NHS doctor and has been making some of the best speeches of the entire Independence Campaign. Specifically she has been outlining why the Scottish NHS is more than just under threat if there is a No vote, it is in fact in serious trouble. In the podcast we talked about why that is the case but we also talked about the broader independence campaign and what we thought Yes activists can do to push us over the line. Finally, as ever, I asked my guest their personal reasons for supporting Scottish Independence. Hope you enjoy……
On Wednesday 3rd of September I went along to the fantastic Songs For Scotland event in Oran Mor in Glasgow. Artists such as Lady Alba, Dick Gaughan, Loki with Rebecca Wallace, Kathleen MacInnes, Findlay Napier, Shooglenifty and many more played to a full house in the beautiful setting designed by Alasdair Gray. I spoke to some of the artists, organisers and crowd about their inspirations for doing the event (and of course why they support Scottish Independence. The show is interspersed with some of the music from the evening as well. Hope you enjoy...…

For the 92nd episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke to Cat Boyd from the Radical Independence Campaign. We expressed our joy at the arrival of the party leaders coming up from down south to tell us all what to think. Well, no, we didn't, but we talked about what effect this might have on the campaign and if we think their desperate promises of more powers will be believed. We talked about the diversity of one campaign and the homogeneity of the other. Can you guess which was which? Finally, as ever, I asked my guest their personal reasons for supporting Scottish Independence. Hope you enjoy……
If you're going mad watching the full-on Britnat assault on all channels now, here's a wee antidote. For the 90th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke to Zara Kitson, from Green Yes and National Collective. We talked about the campaign entering its final phase and the difference in how the two campaigns have been conducted. I asked about Green Yes and what they have managed to during the campaign. Farage is going to get a lot of coverage when he comes up, but when Natalie Bennett, who is the leader of the Green Party in England & Wales - which actually does have an MP, came up to support Independence, it passed almost without mention? Why so? Finally, as ever, I asked my guest their personal reasons for supporting Scottish Independence. Hope you enjoy……

For the 90th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke to Math Campbell, from the campaign group English Scots For Yes. We talked about how well their group has been going and why it got started. I also asked him about the experience in general of being an English Scot campaigning for Independence. He also gave his opinion on some of the more bizarre stuff coming out in the media south of the border re the referendum (e.g. Katie Hopkins). "I believe there's a space in Europe, it's an empty space, and it's shaped like Scotland." For the 65th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with George Gunn and if you want another juicy quote from it try the following... "The real labour party doesn't exist. That's a kind of Anti-Brigadoon that we could live without." George is a poet and playwright who, amongst other things, has also produced for BBC radio, writes over at Bella Caledonia and has been a deep sea fisherman and a north sea oil worker. We talked about his new play 3000 Trees, which will be on at the festival this summer, and its relevance to the indy debate. There's some pretty worrying material in there. Secondly we talked about worrying material, notably the nuclear stuff being dumped all around Scotland, but particularly near his neck of the woods. We got on to the festival itself and the Scottish cultural scene and some of the problems therein and finally we talked about why George supports Independence for Scotland and some of what he would hope to see happen in the new independent country. For the 64th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Baron Wallace of Tankerness and I could not have hoped for a more distinguised guest. As his wikipedia page says about him... ...a British politician, leader of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords and the Advocate General for Scotland. He was formerly Leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, Member of Parliament (MP) for Orkney and Shetland, Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for Orkney and the first Deputy First Minister of Scotland in the Scottish Executive. For the 63rd episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with James Foley and Pete Ramand. James and Pete are the co-founders of the Radical Independence Campaign and authors of the new book Yes: The Radical Case for Independence. They've also been organising The Independence Lectures, along with Pluto Press. We talked about their new book, the reasons for Independence contained therein and what we should be looking to do after a Yes vote. We also talked about what the Radical Independence Campaign have got coming up, particularly in terms of voting registration. One of my cats seemed to want to get in on the act at the beginning of the show too. Hope you enjoy. The 62nd episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast is the first in a series of lectures on Scottish Independence organised by the Radical Independence group. It is reproduced here with thanks to Pete Ramand and James Foley. The 61st episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast comes from a speech made at the Radical Independence Conference by Professor Ailsa McKay, who recently passed away. Ailsa was recommended to me on three separate occasions as someone who I should try to get onto the show. I tried to get in touch but was obviously unaware of her illness. Nevertheless, the aforementioned speech she made was available and I decided to put it out as an MP3 so that it might reach some people who didn't see it there. It's certainly worth it. Some of the work she did in her life is described on her Wikipedia page. "McKay was Reader in Gender and Economics until her 2011 appointment as Professor of Economics at Glasgow Caledonian University. She also served as Vice Dean of the Glasgow School for Business and Society until 2013. She specialized in gender inequalities and the economics of the welfare state, and served as a consultant to the Scottish Parliament, the Irish Government, Her Majesty's Treasury, and the United Nations Development Programme. Since 2006, she held the visiting chair in gender studies at the Complutense University of Madrid, and was invited as an expert witness to give evidence during the budget process to the Scottish Parliament and the Parliament of Canada. She was a leading authority on gender budget analysis in the United Kingdom. She was also a business commentator for The Herald newspaper. In 2012 she was appointed by the Scottish Government as a member of the Expert Working Group on Welfare and Constitutional Reform." Hope you enjoy.…
For the 60th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with John Robertson. John is the academic that recently published extensive research showing that the BBC has been favouring the No side in the Scottish Independence debate. The story however did not end there as the BBC began a series of, well, sleekit manouevres to play the man and not the ball. This resulted in, amongst other things, his appearance in front of a committee in the Scottish Parliament at which certain members seemed determined to continue the defamation. We talked about the research, the aftermath and John's more general opinions on the media and why Scotland should be an independent country. My dog Marvin also made his first appearance on the podcast, throwing in his tuppence-worth in the introduction. Hope you enjoy. For the 41st episode of the For A’ That podcast Andrew and I were joined by broadcaster and blogger Derek Bateman, former Socialist MSP and member of Women For Indy, Carolyn Leckie and writer and blogger William Duguid. First we talked about the Sturgeon/Lamont stramash. At the risk of going against one of the things we thought was bad about it, was the real knockout blow actually delivered to the political process itself? Is it too simple just to say it was awful and move on? Were they both equally guilty? Do we (or well, the media) need to start using alternative formats. Secondly we talked about the recent activities of the Tory government who seem to have been going round businesses begging them to say something negative about independence. Should we just be a bit stronger and tell them where to go? Another topic was the Women for Indy project and the report it is going to publish shortly. Carolyn let us know what the main problems and outcomes were, and how much work there still is to do in this area. We also got on to the crowdfunding stories in the last week. Amazing, certainly, but why has this phenomenon started to gather pace and can we be sure the money is going where it's needed most? There is all that and more in the new episode. Hope you enjoy. Sorry for the truly dreadful title but the 58th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast comes from a recent Yes Leith/Edinburgh North West Event, and thanks to them for letting me reproduce it as a podcast. It took place last month and the speakers were, in this order, Fiona Hyslop the Scottish culture secretary, Robin McAlpine from the Reid Foundation (here's his new-ish blog too), Michelle Thomson from Business for Scotland and Colin Fox from the SSP (and he's got a rather good line in his bit). The question and answer session at the end is also worth listening to. "Like Wonga.com on steroids". The 56th episode The Scottish Independence Podcast is the second of the presentation-type podcasts that I've put out this week, next time we'll get back to the interviews. This time the presentation comes from Business for Scotland and features former guest on the podcast Ivan McKee, who I'm sure you've been seeing on TV recently, and Michelle Thomson. The presentation is called The Economic Case for Independence, and that quote with Wonga.com at the start was not referring to Scotland's prospects. It's quite a long episode so you might want to divide your listening into sections. Hope you enjoy. The 55th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast is the first of two that aren't the usual interview format but rather some talks that are taken from here and there and will provide both useful information for campaigners, and I hope some enjoyable listening. This one comes from an event a few weeks back in Kirkcaldy and the speakers were Alistair Bruce, who is involved with Yes Kirkcaldy, Ross Ingerbergson who is a communications director for the SNP, Robin McAlpine who is the director of the Reid Foundation (I also interviewed him here) and writer and former BBC journalist Lesley Riddoch, who, apart from the excellence of the talk itself, in this speech deals admirably with a heckler (I also interviewed her here). It's quite long so you might not want to listen to it in one go but I'd recommend that even if you do it all in parts, you try to get through it. Also thanks to Two Thumbs Fresh Productions, for letting me reproduce it. For the 40th episode of the For A’ That podcast Andrew made his return and we were joined by Anne Donohoe and Kenny McQuarrel, who is the Director General of BBC Scotlandshire. David Cameron's speech of the other day was a topic, and the love-bombing he proposed therein. Also, Salmond's fiery reaction to it was worthy of note. The equal marriage bill has passed, and about time too say most of us but we had a look back at the road to getting to this position. We also talked about the SNP's continuing difficulties on the justice brief, particularly, but not only, with regard to the proposed corroboration reforms. Lord Lang's comments were also worth a mention. Finally, due to safety considerations relating to the threat of Cybernattery against the DG of BBC Scotlandshire, he was forced to join in the conversation from inside a concrete bunker 30 feet underground, and the resulting loss in sound quality could not be helped. It's the 53rd episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast and this time I spoke with William Duguid who on his own blog and for National Collective, has been writing some of the funnier stuff we've been seeing recently. In fact, that was one of the points of discussion, as we ruminated over Rory Bremner's assertion that there isn't enough comedy in this debate. William lived down (very) south for a long time so we also talked about the gap (well, chasm) between what is actually going on in Scotland and how it is perceived in that place where people are going to be calling us all from soon. We also talked about William's reasons for supporting Indy. Finally, although we didn't have wind of Cameron's attempt to boost the Yes vote by 10 percent at the time we recorded, Love-bombing got a look in. For the 43rd episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Lesley Riddoch, writer, blogger, broadcaster, podcaster and speaker. The conversation took in a number of things including what's to be done now, and why it can't wait for the referendum, the lack of empowerment in Scottish communities and why the official Yes campaign may or may not have to walk a tightrope but the rest of us should be getting stuck right into it. There's also a radical suggestion about what's to be done about the Scotsman, but you'll have to listen to find it out what it is. The 42nd episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast comes from a talk given by Gordon MacIntyre-Kemp from the organisation Business for Scotland. It's really quite remarkable to hear a lot of the things he talks about spelled out so clearly and there are a lot of great little facts you could use in conversation in there as well. Who really bailed out RBS and HBOS, for example? Which is more volatile, the oil price or the stock market? Find out how we're also subsidising England when we die. I think you'll also find that most, if not all, of the issues brought up would compliment rather than go against the Common Weal vision that Robin McAlpine spelled out in our last episode. Hope you enjoy… LINKS https://twitter.com/BizforScotland http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/ http://www.businessforscotland.co.uk/ https://twitter.com/mgreenwell…
For the 41st episode, Robin McAlpine is back on the Scottish Independence Podcast. Robin, as if you didn't already know, is the director of the Reid Foundation and the editor of Scottish Left Review. We had a wide-ranging discussion on a number of issues surrounding the Independence Referendum, which also surprisingly included something about willow-coppicing, which is a thing I had never previously heard of. We also talked about the Reid Foundation's latest paper on industrial relations and how they could be done better with a different political culture, the kind of one that maybe, a newly independent country might have. Robin also outlined some possible taxation options. Who are the real opponents to Scottish Independence, the people you find around Westminster or their real masters? Has the referendum begun to create a new political community in Scotland that, regardless of the result in this referendum, will guarantee change in the future? Why won't it get better for Better Together? Find out some answers to all these in the podcast. Also, Robin would like to invite you all along to the Common Weal launch party at The Arches in Glasgow on Sunday afternoon. For the 40th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Stewart Bremner, who is a graphic artist, illustrator and designer. He's been involved in the Scottish independence debate in a number of ways, making posters for Bella Caledonia, making an excellent short video called When I Was A Child (it's at the start of the podcast too). We talked about his work and why they don't often stress the historical and cultural angles in the debate. We also talked about the political poster as an art form. Has it had its day? Hope you enjoy… LINKS http://www.stewartbremner.co.uk/ http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/ https://twitter.com/stewartbremner https://twitter.com/mgreenwell…
For the 39th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke to Anne Donohoe, who, amongst other things is a Yes Scotland activist. The interesting thing though, is that she didn't start as an independence supporter but rather came to the conclusion that indy would be best after a long number of years working in various political campaigns around the country, and coming to some pretty damning conclusions about the nature of the British state. She has also been a member of CND for a long time, and we talked about the decision of that organisation to join the Yes Scotland group. More recently she's been working as a tour guide and I asked her what visitors to Scotland know and are thinking about the referendum. Finally, we talked about how the Glorious Revolution probably wasn't so glorious after all. Hope you enjoy… LINKS https://twitter.com/SadieCybernat https://twitter.com/mgreenwell http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/…
For the 38th episode of For A' That, Andrew and I were joined by Ivan McKee from Business for Scotland and Juliet Swann who works for the electoral reform society. Up for discussion were the IFS report. Were the numbers as accurate as they might have been? Who are the Institute for Fiscal Studies and were there deficiencies in the way the whole thing was covered? Equal marriage was on the parliamentary timetable again and it appears to finally be on the way. Why has Scotland dragged its heels a little on this matter. England. What about it, I hear you ask. Well, will it make any substantive difference what people in England think about it all to how Scottish people vote. If they come pleading us not to leave or if the Mail's "bugger off jocks" narrative continues, how will it affect things, if at all? Hope you enjoy LINKS http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/ http://lallandspeatworrier.blogspot.co.uk/ http://muteswann.wordpress.com/ http://www.businessforscotland.co.uk/ https://twitter.com/mgreenwell https://twitter.com/muteswann https://twitter.com/BizforScotland https://twitter.com/PeatWorrier…
For the 38th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast, I am reproducing a talk given by Shami Chakrabarti from the campaign group Liberty. This talk is reproduced with the kind permission of Liverpool John Moores University. It comes from their Roscoe lecture series. The reason I am reproducing this talk is that with Cameron himself suggesting the UK may have to withdraw from the European Convention on Human Rights a month or so ago, these become important issues not just globally, but also in the upcoming referendum. Chakrabarti was once, for the hideous crime of sticking up for human rights, described as "The most dangerous woman in Britain" by The Sun. In this talk she explains the importance of the rights we have, and what might begin to unravel if they were removed. Hope you enjoy… LINKS http://www.liberty-human-rights.org.uk/about/structure/liberty-director.php http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/ http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/roscoe/101110.htm http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/conservative/10342403/Britain-may-need-to-withdraw-from-European-Convention-on-Human-Rights-says-Cameron.html http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/ https://twitter.com/mgreenwell http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/category/the-scottish-independence-podcast/…
This time I was joined by Mark MacNicol, a Glaswegian novelist and playwright, who assured me his new novel, Finn McCool Rises, has more than a little to do with the Independence Referendum. We talked about his new book and the mythology behind it. We also got on to how it can be difficult for Scottish writers in the current climate and Mark was happy to give a concrete example. Mark gave his reasons for supporting independence and also talked about some of the benefits he hopes it will bring to the Scottish people.…

For the 37th For A' That podcast, Andrew and I were joined by Natalie McGarry and Rev Stu Campbell from the Wings Over Scotland site. The first topic up was the recent problems surrounding the allocation of contracts for shipbuilding in Glasgow and/or Portsmouth. Ian Davidson's remarkable performances were discussed, as were the different narratives the story was run with depending whether you were north or south of the Tweed. Second was the continuing travails of Johann Lamont. Where does she go from here? More to the point, where has she actually been going up to now? The constitution of an Independent Scotland is obviously an important issue we're going to have a look at. What should be in what should be out? What are the dangers of basing it too much on the politics of today? Why shouldn't economic rights be in there? Finally, why are the dangers in holding certain other places up as examples. The last topic was the poppy. Do the public necessarily go along with the examples being set by media and politicians alike? Are there dangers in the way remembrance services are currently portrayed? Deep fried mars bars and Prince Philip also get a look in. Hope you enjoy... In the course of these podcasts I'd like to include, along with our usual interviews, some debates that happen along the way that you may have missed. These may be debates in Scotland on the subject of independence directly, like this one, or alternatively on subjects which, like the last episode, are related to the debate but deserve to be seen in a broader context. This episode is the debate recently held by Clydebank TUC with the subject "Should The Working Class Support Independence? The original audio was very poor but I've worked on it as best I can and it is now audible (the first minute isn't great but it gets better). In the bits where lots of people are shouting however, it still sounds like lots of people shouting in a room. It is interesting to note however, that Anas Sarwar was the person being consistently shouted down in such a labour heartland. The speakers were Linda Fabiani MSP from the SNP, Anas Sarwar MP Deputy Leader Scottish Labour, Richard Leonard from the Red Paper Collective and GMB Scotland Political Officer and finally Jim Bollan WDC Councillor. Hope you enjoy. LINKS http://www.clydebanktuc.org/ http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/…
One of the major reasons the UK state does not want Scotland to leave, though it is not often spelled out in this way, is that the UK's ability to project its power worldwide would diminish. There are so many assumptions wrapped up in this idea that it is sometimes hard to know where to begin unpicking them. In what way is this power projected, and to what end? Why is it automatically considered by many, and usually by the media, that the UK is using this power for good? Those are good questions. However, the discussion is usually limited to ideas surrounding "Humanitarian Intervention", and whether it is the right thing to do this time around. Recent examples of UK "Humanitarian Intervention" would be Iraq, Afghanistan, Yugoslavia and many others. The podcast you are about to listen to is a speech by Noam Chomsky from earlier this month in which he takes apart this doctrine of Humanitarian Intervention. Though he speaks principally about the United States, what he says on the topic holds good for the UK which, for the most part, desperately tries to hang on to the coat tails of the US. Are these the kind of interventions worth defending? Have a listen...…
For the 36th episode of For A' That, Andrew and I were joined by James Maxwell and Peter Geoghegan. First topic up was the by-election in Dunfermalino. Predictable result given the circumstances or should we be reading more into it? Why don't the Greens do better? The next topic was Grangemouth and this broadened into a larger discussion about nationalisation. Finally, we got onto the definitions that are being used about what is happening in Scotland. Separation? Independence? Constitutional Change? Which of these, if any, really sums up what is going on? Hope you enjoy... For the second episode of this week I spoke to Paul Leinster, who is a member of both Labour For Indy and Republic Scot. We talked about the Labour For Indy group itself and the hostile reaction to it by some within the (not for Indy) Labour party. We also talked about Republic Scotland and how much support they receive within and outwith Holyrood. Is it certain we will keep the monarchy after a Yes vote? Finally we spoke about Paul himself and why someone who is a member of the Labour party and was once a unionist was first convinced by the arguments (economic and more) to vote independence and then further to actively campaign for it. For the 32nd episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast (well, actually if you count the specials it is more than that, call it the 32nd interview) I spoke with Lynda Williamson, who works at Newsnet Scotland. We spoke about how Newsnet got started. What were the reasons and motivations for setting up? What do they hope to achieve with it? From there we moved on to to Lynda's reasons for supporting Independence and finally on to the broader media scene in Scotland, why things generally tend to come from one side more than the other, and who else is trying to provide a corrective. This is a special edition of the podcast featuring some music, some opinions from the crowd and some of the speeches from the Independence Rally in Edinburgh on 21st September 2014. The idea is to give those of you who were there a nice little keepsake of it, and for those like me who were unfortunate enough not to be able to make it, to give an idea of what went on. I'm well aware of course that the best thing about going to this type of political event is not the speeches, but rather the people you meet and the camaraderie. However, it's quite difficult to put that onto an MP3 so this is the best I can do for the podcast! There are many speakers featured including four who have featured on the podcast before (Carolyn Leckie, Patrick Harvie, Colin Fox, Alan Bissett). There were also contributions from Elaine C Smith, Hardeep Singh Kholi and many others. Songs include work by Citizen Smart, as well as someone playing in the street! Hope you enjoy...…

The Scottish Independence Podcast

The complicated web of highly technical computer interfaces we use to make our podcasts seems to have reached a level of intelligence on its own. It has brought the Scottish Independence Podcast episode from the 19th September 2014 back in time one year. I feel it is my civic duty to publish it...
For our 35th episode Andrew and I were joined by James Maxwell and Kate Higgins. James has been over to Catalonia to see what's happening in their independence campaign. Can parallels be drawn between what's happening there and what is happening in Scotland? Moreover, SHOULD parallels be drawn between Scotland and the various other independent movements around the world, or is our situation unique? A lot of people were asking where Johann Lamont was during the summer. Well, she came back with an errrm, interesting accusation in last week's FMQs. What does this say about the Labour press department and more widely their strategy and competence. The new Scottish budget came out this week. Is Swinney doing well? How difficult is it to keep the wheels turning in the face of what is (or isn't) coming from Westminster. Finally, a year to go! How are you going to spend it?…
Andrew and I were joined by two guests for the 34th episode of the For A' That podcast. Making his second appearance was Pat Kane, and making his first was James Kelly, who writes the blog Scot Goes Pop. The first topic of discussion was the errrm, debate, between Nicola Sturgeon and Anas Sarwar. We didn't talk about it in glowing terms. Gordon Brown making another appearance in the debate got a look in. Were his proposed constitutional changes just hot air or do they actually mean something? Also Brown himself, a confusing (surely confused?) figure at the best of times. Should we be trying to rock the boat more and strike out with a bold vision of a new Scotland or should we be trying to allay the fears that some people have about Indy. In a week of wildly differing polls, we asked if they matter. LINKS http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/ http://lallandspeatworrier.blogspot.co.uk/ https://twitter.com/thoughtland http://scotgoespop.blogspot.co.uk/?m=1…
For the 33rd episode of the For A' That podcast Andrew and I were joined by Thomas Widmann who blogs about the Indy debate, from a Scandinavian perspective (he is a Dane but has lived in Scotland for more than 10 years) at Arc of Prosperity. As we took last week off there was a lot to get through. Our first topic was the Bulmer £100 story. We then moved on to the recent poll by YouGov - was it disappointing or disappointingly done? "Undecideds" are a big point of discussion - who the hell are they? We had a few things to say about the Bill Walker story and not all of them were complimentary. We reserved the same kind of analysis that we gave to the royal baby story for the threat that Scotland could be kicked out of the Commonwealth if it became independent. We also had time to discuss the rather bizarre statement by James MacMillan and his dispute with National Collective. Hope you enjoy LINKS http://www.arcofprosperity.org/ https://twitter.com/mgreenwell https://twitter.com/PeatWorrier https://twitter.com/arcofprosperity http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/ http://lallandspeatworrier.blogspot.co.uk/…
The guest for the 30th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast was Stephen Noon. Stephen works for Yes Scotland and is also doing a PhD in European Law. Stephen has consistently called for positivity in the campaign, notwithstanding the onslaught that the Yes campaign has faced. I asked him why. We also talked about why Yes Scotland is winning in two out of three of the main pillars of the discussion. Can we try to force more fairness into the debate? We had a word about that too. Finally, we got round to talking about Scotland and the EU. Will we be forced to join the Euro? Will there be problems joining? How does that compare with somewhere like Catalonia? Hope you enjoy... For the 32nd episode of the For A' That podcast, Andrew and I were joined by Juliet Swann who is a feminist and environmentalist whohappens to work for the Electoral Reform Society. She also did a turn for the Women For Indy Voices project this week. We talked about the interesting work that this society has been doing and the Democracy Max initiative. How can we improve our democracy, regardless of a Yes or No vote. We know what the usual commentators think, but what have the public been telling the electoral reform society. What about the William McIlvanney statement this week? Was it notable in and of itself or was the coverage it received more worthy of analysis? The wacky world of Willie Rennie's logic gets a quick look in and we also talk about the possibilities provided by beard ownership.…

For the 31st episode of the For A’ That podcast, Andrew and I were joined by journalist Peter Geoghegan. On the menu this week was the crowd-funded poll commissioned by Wings Over Scotland and conducted by Panelbase that many in the media seem intent on ignoring. We chewed over the ramifications of some of the results. We also thought it worthwhile to discuss Michael Kelly’s article in the Scotsman, in which I felt he was exhibiting first class kamikaze politics – Andrew and Peter weren’t so sure of that, but they were reasonably sure about Kelly. We discussed how Peter felt about the article in the Huffington Post that caused a little discussion this week. We tried to explain the point to Andrew, who hadn’t read it. This proved problematic as we weren’t actually sure what her point was. Andrew and I also revealed our history of scandalous confrontations with Children’s TV.…

For the 3rd time in recent episodes The Scottish Independence Podcast is going back to the parliament, this time to talk to John Finnie MSP. John is an Independent MSP for the Highlands and Islands region and one of the topics of our discussion was why he made the decision to become an independent rather than stay with the SNP. We also talked about the disgraceful immigration policies of the UK government and how, whilst Scotland has already sought to curb some of the worst excesses of those policies, it could do so much better. Then we got on to what might be some good foreign policy options for an Independent Scotland. There is all this and much more in there. "I don't think the UK economy is in recovery...I think it's going back to the disease that [it] suffered from in the run-up to the recession". Patrick Harvie is the guest for the 51st episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast. If you didn't already know, Patrick is an MSP and the co-convener of the Scottish Green Party and he came on to the podcast to talk about some of the alternative ideas post-independence that are outlined in the new Green YES document. For example, the Greens are openly advocating for a Scottish Currency instead of the pound or Euro, there should be a move away from centralised government, and what's a Citizen's Income? It's well worth the listen.…
Did you know that there is a part of Scotland that already has an oil fund? That was building social housing when the rest of the UK was selling it off? That was in some ways already going beyond party politics? Well there is, and it's called Shetland. For those reasons and more for the 50th episode (actually if you count Christmas, New Year, April Fools and others there's been a lot more) of the Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Brian Nugent, who's involved with Yes Shetland. We spoke about how things are a little different in terms of local govt up there. We also got on to how the campaign is affected by some things that it might not necessarily be in the rest of the country. We talked about that oil fund has been used too, and much more. For the 39th episode of the For A' That podcast I was joined by the editors of the Mair Nor A Roch Wind website, namely Amy Westwell, Cailean Gallagher and Rory Scothorne. Their site has been described thusly... “This should *really* scare the Labour establishment” – Pat Kane “It’s like being harangued by a keelie Lenin” – A Cybernat “First I’ve read on this site, which some have been recommending. Dear lord.” – Wings over Scotland “They’ve walked into no mans land, These guys are absolutely smack bang in the middle of everybody” - Lesley Riddoch You certainly won't be hearing the standard Yes or No positions in the podcast. We discussed the site itself, the inspiration for it and its goals. We also talked about Putin's intervention into the debate, the recent study suggesting that (shock) the media may actually have a pro-union bias and the cybernat idea - though this was recorded before this story took it's latest turn. Apart from that we talked about why, against the evidence in my opinion, they think the labour party may still be the vehicle for social change in an independent Scotland. There's much more in there besides. Oh and Andrew wasn't able to join us, but he'll be back. Hope you enjoy...…
"...Labour ministers, culture ministers... one overheard, when she was asked if Scottish Studies should be part of the school curriculum replied 'oh no, I'm not educating a generation of nationalists" For the 49th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Billy Kay. Billy has for years been writing, broadcasting and producing material on Scottish Culture and Scots language, for the BBC and internationally. We talked about his output and much more including the effect that the dearth of Scottish culture and history in our schools may have had on the population, the Scottish Insurrection of 1820, the campaign for hearts and heads and other things besides. Hope you enjoy...…
The Scottish Independence campaign is obviously not the only one happening around the world, so it is more than useful to see the similarities and differences in what is going on elsewhere. With this in mind, for the 48th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I took a trip to Catalonia (not literally - though it'd be nice), and the guest was Anna Arqué who is involved in the Catalonian Independence Movement and some groups that work at a European level trying to stress the importance of the democratic right of self-determination including the International Commission For European Citizens (and she hopes some more Scots will get on there and sign the thing). Hope You Enjoy LINKS http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/wp-admin/www.europeancitizensdecide.eu https://twitter.com/anna_arque http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/ https://twitter.com/mgreenwell…
"If I'd had my way, in 1999 before a politician's bum had hit a seat in this chamber...I would've had them all travel, for at least 6 weeks round Scotland to visit every local authority. And ideally to go by public transport because small country as it is, we need to better understand its attributes and its issues." ... as said by Jean Urquhart MSP, who is the guest for the 46th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast. Aside from that, we get into what it is like being an independent in the parliament, some history of the Scottish Independence movement, why she resigned from the SNP, are the Shetland and Orkney independence movements we hear about real and much more.…
David Comerford is the guest for the 45th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast. David is an economist at The University of Stirling, who is working on the ESRC's Future of the UK & Scotland project. Listening to this is your chance to get over some of the spin from both sides in this debate. Some of the questions I put to him were... What are the benefits of staying or leaving the EU? What's the truth surrounding currency choices? Is the white paper realistic? Aside from that, David had some important things to say on the subject of short-termism and how narrow some of the thinking so far has been. It all might require your thinking cap, so I'd put it on now. Hope you enjoy……
Derek Bateman is the guest for the 45th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast. Here is what his BBC biog says about him... Derek Bateman is a veteran of the Scottish news scene having begun as a trainee reporter with the Scotsman in his teens and spending the last 45 years covering politics and current affairs in various guises - as a reporter with the Glasgow Herald, political editor of Scotland on Sunday, a foreign correspondent for STV's international output, a correspondent for the Observer and commentator and presenter at Radio Scotland. Over the years he has specialised in politics, international affairs and Europe having been a regular observer of EU affairs in Brussels and Strasbourg. He followed the Troubles in Ireland from Dublin and Belfast and as a reporter and radio documentary-maker for BBC Scotland he has worked in Russia, Finland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, France, the Basque Country, Catalonia, Denmark, Iceland and the Deep South of the United States. He has presented two presidential elections from Washington. He made a location documentary series on the Quebec referendum in 1995 and another on the handover of Hong Kong to China the following year. Among the highlights of 20 years at the BBC - for him, if not the audience - are co-presenting Good Morning Scotland for 10 years and presenting the Saturday current affairs review Newsweek Scotland. He is a regular presenter of Westminster and Holyrood election night coverage and of by-elections. He occupied the presenter's chair for the opening of the Scottish Parliament in 1999. The thing is though, Derek decided to chuck it all in so he could have his say in the Scottish Independence debate and since then his blogs have been lighting up the debate. This podcast should lively up your evening a fair old bit as well. Hope you enjoy... After the pain of the content in the MadVent(ing) calendar, it is time to return to the good stuff. This episode of the podcast features some little bits in the indyref debate that might have escaped your attention but are well worth the listen. I would have had it out yesterday but was having some connection issues so here it is for you today. Hope you enjoy… LINKS http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/ https://twitter.com/mgreenwell…
For the 44th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast the guest was Alastair Hutchison from the group Lib Dem Voters for Indy. We talked about the group and how it got started. We talked about why liberals may or may not make the jump from federalism to independence and we talked about why the Libdems didn't join with SNP in 2007, when such a thing might have been the logical step. Alastair is also a Hearts fan, and we talked about Hearts fans and how the debate is playing out in a group that unusually includes Alex Salmond AND George Foulkes. It's also the 100th podcast in total that we've done. Hope you've been enjoying them! Ivan McKee is a businessman and a member of Business For Scotland and he is the guest for the 29th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast. In our conversation we talked about what advantages there will be for business in an independent Scotland and what the disadvantages of having to go through London are. We also talked about the origins of the Business for Scotland group itself and how it is quickly growing in strength. What would be the benefits of setting up an oil fund? How should it be managed? The Scandinavian model is often cited in the Scottish Independence debate. Would business run away from Scotland if such a model is introduced. Ivan doesn't think so. Which lobbying group do Business For Scotland support the broad aims of? I bet it isn't one you'd be thinking of. We even threw in a bit about who stands to lose money if Scotland becomes independent. For episode 30 of the For A' That podcast I was joined by former Scottish Socialist Party MSP and member of Women For Indy, Carolyn Leckie and New Statesman contributor and co-editor of Bella Caledonia, James Maxwell. Andrew wasn't with us as he had some wetlands to vex. Our discussion started with the accusations this week that all is not as it seems with Labour For Indy. Is it a front group, is the hand of the SNP behind it? Carolyn and Jamie seemed to feel the whole story says more about our media than it does about the group itself. We moved on to the Unions and their reticence to get involved officially so far. Salmond's interview on Russia Today provoked a little discussion, and not just about what he actually said. We discussed the form of democracy Scotland should take after Indy. For example, should there be further referendums on issues like monarchy and currency? Should the parliament be unicameral or bicameral. If there is a second chamber, how could that be organised? Finally, we spoke about James' recent article in which he suggested that aside from damaging (or not) the Yes campaign, the campaign of Better Together is just generally damaging.…
For the 28th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Paul Larkin. Paul is a writer who has made the Amazon bestseller list and is very well-known amongst those of us who support Celtic and is one of the mainstays of Hail Hail media, the Celtic fans very own channel. For many people however, he'll be something new on the menu. We had a very open conversation indeed. It took in the problems that many of the Celtic support have with the SNP, the kinds of conversation Paul is having with the supporters when he speaks to them, positive/negative campaigning and the detachment between people and politicians up and down the UK. We also got on to his time in New York and what people think about Scotland there and why there has historically been a negative attitude from some Celtic supporters toward the Scottish national team. Finally, we had a word about Paul's upcoming book, in which he promises there will be some serious revelations about who pulls what strings in Scotland. For the 27th episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Bill Ramsay. He is an activist for the EIS, the oldest teachers union in the world. Aside from that, he has some very interesting views about the UK government's plans to have ceremonies/celebrations of the BEGINNING of the First World War. The end, ok. The beginning? It's a curious position. It was very much a discussion in two parts though, and the other part was to do with the unions. Will they go Indy? Will they declare pro-union? It's a complicated story. Hope you enjoy it……
For the 29th episode of the For A' That podcast Andrew and I went back to doing a two-hander - it's been a while. With a number of things going on this week we did our bes_68423209_aterixbigt to get through quite a few of them. First up was the Scottish Referendum Franchise Bill. 16 and 17 year olds are ok apparently, but prisoners no. What are the progressive and regressive aspects of this? We moved on to speak about the Gay Marriage bill that in Scotland is speeding towards ratification with all the speed of a stoned snail. Andrew had an interesting question to ask about whether countries often play follow-the-leader with such laws. It's often suggested that some people react with the head, while others the heart. Where does this come into politics? Is it really a false premise to suggest that people have to be one or the other way? We got philosophical on the matter. Asterix in Scotland or Duggy Dug? I think it will become clear which we prefer. Finally, Andrew seemed more convinced than I am that the Labour reshuffle will bring something different into the Game Of Drones that Scottish politics can sometimes seem like.…
For the 26th Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Jack Foster who is the writer and narrator of a few films I'm sure most of you have seen by now. The first he made was Precious Few Heroes "Whether you're for or against an independent Scotland, or maybe you're not entirely convinced either way, this film makes the positive case for Scottish independence in a light-hearted, self-effacing fashion. Forget the historic grudges, the ancient battles and the unjustly romanticized idols, Scottish independence isn't about "us and them", it isn't about anti-Englishness, it isn't about ownership, it isn't even about the SNP!" That was followed up with A Parting Hymn: Lies Deceit And The Death of The Labour Party "'A Parting Hymn' is in some respects a tribute to the political party that was once a voice for the poor and the working classes, the embodiment of fairness and solidarity. On the other, it recognises the very real death of the Labour party, whilst unashamedly making the case for Socialism (however lonely a voice that might be in a post Thatcher/Blair era)." More recently, the Top Ten Unionist Myths Debunked video caused a fair bit of fuss. He's also recently put out a Let's Vote Yes video. We talked about the inspiration behind his films and the reaction to them and we talked about why he supports Independence. Hope you enjoy it... So we're back from our two and a half week break and this time we had Callum McCormick as guest. Callum is a contributor to Bella Caledonia and a PhD student. Up for discussion were the SNP and Mark McDonald's victory last night in the Donside by-election. What can we take out of this? Good news for the SNP? What does it say that the turnout was as low as 38%? Did UKIP do well or badly? Secondly we had a chat about the Road To Referendum documentaries that have recently been shown on STV. A good attempt or were there important omissions from the narrative? Finally, William Hague came up to Edinburgh yesterday to tell everyone how lovely and spiffing every else seems to think the UK is. Did you find him convincing?…
For this week’s episode of For A’ That Andrew were joined by Robin McAlpine of the Reid Foundation. Up for discussion were the accusations of abuse being aimed at Chris Hoy. What constitutes verbal abuse and what constitutes mere disagreement? Does everyone need to calm down a bit or are there certain people that seem to be stoking these fiAt_-SCuCIAEQevNres a little more than others? Is corporation tax and its possible reduction one of your priorities in an Independent Scotland? Would you like to see it or do you think it’d be a bad idea? Actually, do the SNP even think it is a good idea? Robin had some interesting ideas on that. Is English nationalism so bad? Why shouldn’t the English be allowed to rediscover themselves? Finally, Nigel Fauxrage is going to be back in town. Will/should he get the same reaction as before? Hope you enjoy… LINKS…
Episode 25 of the Scottish Independence Podcast and this time round I spoke to Colin Fox who is the National Convenor of the Scottish Socialist Party. We spoke about how the SSP has been a indy supporting party since its inception. Why is the labour party in a seemingly terminal decline in Scotland? Personally, as someone said on twitter, I'd drive Tony Benn up personally to be the leader in an Indy Scotland to give them some backbone. Colin and I gave our views on that. Do we need voter registration drives or do we need to work on registered non-voters, or both? What is Colin's response to the idea that independence would be abandoning the English working class. And what did James Connolly have to say about that as well? The SSP's fortunes have fluctuated over the years, where are they at now? The SSP, the Greens and the SNP may not necessarily seem like happy bedfellows but in the yes campaign there is common purpose. Is it going down the right path? Views on all that and more. Hope you enjoy……
For the 26th episode of For A' That, Andrew and I were joined by Peter McColl, who is the Rector of Edinburgh University and a member of the Green Party. Up for discussion were the recent moves in the Church of Scotland over permitting gay clergy and the Scottish Parliament dragging its heels over the issue of equal marriage, what's going on there? Secondly, Andrew feels that it might be more useful to draw parallels with Ireland in the independence debate, rather than as is usually done with Scandinavia. What could be the reasons for a certain reluctance to do so? Peter and Andrew held court as I waited to get into my stride after a hosting a Champions League final party the night before recording. We also got on to discussing the extra 5 million pounds the BBC is going to pump into its Scottish politics/referendum coverage. What kind of output can we expect? I was somewhat skeptical given the historical functions and output of the BBC, Andrew wondered if I wasn't being unnecessarily gloomy about the possibilities. LINKS https://twitter.com/PeatWorrier https://twitter.com/PeterMcColl https://twitter.com/mgreenwell…
For episode 25 of For A' That Andrew and I were joined by Kate Higgins of the Burdzeyeview blog and others. It was unfortunately unavoidable to talk about Farage, so we did. We also spoke about the recent TV debates. Entertainment or real debate? Enlightening or just sound and fury? BBC or STV? Kate spoke about the new victims and witnesses bill that is coming up and this moved us on to topics apart from the referendum. Should we be doing that more? That's "we" in the sense of the podcast and "we" as in the sense of the people. Finally, it's about time someone gave Walt Disney what for, the question is, should it have been me or should Alex Salmond be doing it? (The documentary I referenced is called "Mickey Mouse Monopoly" if you want to try and find it.) Hope you enjoy… LINKS https://twitter.com/burdzeyeview https://twitter.com/PeatWorrier https://twitter.com/mgreenwell http://www.veoh.com/watch/v15800022cezMt3D6?h1=Mickey+Mouse+Monopoly+ http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/2007/10/05/how-to-get-arrested-in-disneyland/…
For episode 24 of For A' That Andrew and I had THREE guests for the first time, namely Natalie McGarry, Doug Daniel and Ruaridh Waddell. It was a busy week in Scottish politics and that was reflected in the number of subjects we had to get through. Firstly, we beavered away trying to answer as many of the 500 questions as we possibly could. Then we got onto the voluntary sector as some stories have come out recently saying that some organisations in this sector have some concerns about what might happen in an independent Scotland. We asked several things about this line of thinking, the first of them being is it actually true? This led us on nicely to another commitment that the UK government has reneged on. I am sure you can think of a few so you'll have to listen to find out which one we talked about. Finally, we explained why, in spite of some not so good recent polls, we are mostly still feeling optimistic for the referendum. Strangely, during the recording this week some animals WERE harmed, but only by other animals (namely my cat). The now defunct bird has been buried with all due honours. Furthermore, a sheep that had recently become a mother created havoc in another place where recording was going on and in a third place a bee delayed our beginning. All of this will explain the outro. LINKS https://twitter.com/nataliemcgarry https://twitter.com/PeatWorrier https://twitter.com/RuairidhWaddell https://twitter.com/DouglasDaniel https://twitter.com/mgreenwell…
For our first For A' That episode for 2 weeks we were joined by Stewart Kirkpatrick, who is the head of digital at Yes Scotland (he was speaking in a personal capacity). Three non-economists spoke about the currency debate. Andrew wondered if there are more than just economic concerns that come into play when the matter is discussed. Stewart hoped that the UK govt will see sense when the time comes and I went off on one. How did you feel about George Osborne coming north and trying to give the natives a good slap-down? We discussed what effects, benefits and possible drawbacks there were to the move. On the subject of threats, did the campaign all get too nasty this week? We had an interesting chat with Stewart about the determination of the official campaign to stay positive and its motivation for that. Finally, the rise of UKIP. What does it all mean for the UK, for England and for the independence debate in Scotland? LINKS https://twitter.com/mgreenwell https://twitter.com/PeatWorrier…
I think almost every Scot will at one time or another have been told off for using a word that, although perfectly acceptable Scots, is not standard English. How could such a situation come about? This was one of the topics of the discussion when I spoke to Michael Hance, who is the director of the Scots Language Centre. We also spoke about the cultural importance of the language, the work of the centre itself, how the situation has changed since devolution and finally about how the situation might improve in the future. If you're wondering why it is not For A' That today, we've flipped them over this week and For A' That will be on Wednesday. Next week we'll be back to normal. I also declined to include my rendition of the poem/song that I have included below the links, not because of worries about the pronunciation but rather that I just don't think poetry comes good coming from me! "Dodging riots and tear gas in Livingstone today. There is a by-election tomorrow and the leader of the opposition has been arrested and charged with inciting violence, personally I think Mrs Lamont should watch out as she does that every Thursday afternoon." I just got that email from the latest guests on the Scottish Independence Podcast when I emailed them to tell them I was just about to publish their episode. The guests are Ruaridh and Keith Waddell who are Scottish aid workers who have been in Zambia for some time. It's important to consider not only the good things we could get or do at home as an independent nation, but also the good we could do abroad. The conversation we had considered how our aid policy could be better than that currently offered by the United Kingdom, which often used aid to suit some more Machiavellian aims. We spoke about what they are doing over in Zambia and we also talked about the role of Scots in the British Empire, and how is not as clear cut as some people like to present it. Furthermore, we had a chat about some, and one in particular, of the less well-known independence movements that can be found around the world. People tend to know about Catalonia and Quebec and so forth but I'd be prepared to bet most of you haven't heard of this one. Enjoy. P.S. This is the advert I mentioned in the podcast that they decided you weren’t mature enough to make your own mind up on. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kRJ2-vZS34 LINKS https://twitter.com/RuairidhWaddell https://twitter.com/mgreenwell http://idaandkeith.blogspot.com…
For the 15th episode of the For A' That podcast Andrew and I spoke with Kate Higgins of Burdz Eye View fame. We had a quick natter about the AAA rating story and why it may be more interesting in a political rather than economic sense. The recent mock referendum at the University of Glasgow was a subject of discussion as were land reform and the recent case about shooting rights that came up at First Minister's Questions this week. Finally, we got on to the possible changes to the trial by jury laws. LINKS https://twitter.com/mgreenwell https://twitter.com/burdzeyeview https://twitter.com/PeatWorrier…
The Scottish Independence Podcast is back after a little break. For this 17th episode I spoke with poet Lorna Waite and we had a few topics of conversation. Firstly we speak about Lorna, herself and her work, and why she believes creating a division between the cultural and economic aspects of the Independence debate is a false way to go about things. We talked about the role of women in the Indy debate and also the more unpleasant colonial aspects of the union, and how we might combat the lack of self-respect that those colonial problems have created in Scotland. Language got a look in as we spoke about the historical suppression of both the Gaelic and Scots language. Lorna is also a Rangers supporter and in the second part of the conversation we moved on to talk about a topic that I began with Kris Kujawa in a previous podcast, and talked about how the debate is playing out among football supporters, this time specifically amongst Rangers fans. We didn't come up with the brightest prospects in that bit. In this episode Andrew and I spoke with Craig Gallagher, who is a doctoral student at Boston College. We spoke about some of the historical legal wrangling between Scotland and England, the lack of Scottish history in our classrooms and the Union and the Scottish role therein from a historical perspective. We moved on to talk about the most recent polls showing strong support for Independence among younger people. We asked why that might be the case. LINKS... https://twitter.com/mgreenwell https://twitter.com/PeatWorrier https://twitter.com/Gallacticos87…
We are back after a little unexpected break and this time Andrew and I were joined by Duncan Hothersall. Our agenda included the recent equal marriage vote in Westminster and also how this issue has played out at Holyrood. This led us to the idea of conscience votes as a concept and what our representatives are actually supposed to do, and it also moved the discussion toward the idea of how religion can still influence policy. Finally, there was neigh way we could resist having a word about horse meat (see what I did there?). https://twitter.com/mgreenwell https://twitter.com/PeatWorrier https://twitter.com/dhothersall…
We talked about the EU from a few different perspectives. The referendum and how it will affect things was one topic and we had a natter about some of the fundamental misunderstandings about what the EU is/does as well. How the EU referendum might change things over at Holyrood got an airing. Could it strain the Unionist alliance? The European Court of Human Rights has also been in the news a bit more than normal recently. Andrew has some interesting ideas as to why. The rhetoric and the reality of what Obama had to say for himself this week was our final little topic. https://twitter.com/PeatWorrier https://twitter.com/mgreenwell…
It's been a busy week by any standards in Scottish politics and in this week's For A' That Andrew, Osama Saeed and myself tried to get through as much as possible. Firstly, we had a discussion about how the Independence show is going down in the media abroad. We then moved on to talk about the section 30 debate this week, the pros and cons and having a constitutional debate now or later and what kind of constitution should we be aiming for. We also found time to talk about the goings on at Glasgow City Council. I hope you enjoy. LINKS https://twitter.com/OsamaSaeed https://twitter.com/PeatWorrier https://twitter.com/mgreenwell…
For our first episode of the 2013 Andrew and I spoke with Dominic Hinde who was able to give us a good idea about the Scandinavian model that is so often put forward as a future for Scotland. We also discussed the stories regarding where Trident could be moving to and the strange hypocrisies that surround the issue at the moment. Andrew was very interested in a major legal reform that is coming up this year. Finally, we put forth our views on how convinced we are that Cameron can win hearts and minds to the cause of the union as he has promised. Enjoy. Back after the little break over the period, episode 16 of the Scottish Independence Podcast is here. This time I spoke to Clare Galloway who is an artist that has been involved in some notable projects, at home and abroad. About a year ago she wrote an article for Bella Caledonia called Lilliput Nation that began to cause a little bit of a stir and it is fair to say to she is quite an outspoken person, in fact, she says it herself in the interview. We talked about what she sees as some of the problems in the Scottish psyche and how these might be mended. There is a discussion about what could be seen as a new growth in positivity and creativity that has come with the independence debate. We also talked about her current project in Italy and why it might be easier to do such a thing there rather than in Scotland as it currently is. Hope you all enjoy Links http://bellacaledonia.org.uk/2012/01/14/lilliput-nation/ http://nationalcollective.com/2012/10/01/clare-galloway-it-is-time-that-scotland-shifted-up-a-gear/ https://twitter.com/claregalloway http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/ https://twitter.com/mgreenwell…

This special end of year episode features Andrew Tickell, Robin McAlpine of the Scottish Left Review and Reid Foundation, Alex Massie who blogs at the Spectator magazine and myself (Michael Greenwell). We talked about our important events of the year and a little about how we think things might go next year. The phoney war we have all been watching so far was certainly a topic as were positivity and negativity. The rise and whys of Johann Lamont also get an airing. There is a special end of year quiz that I predict you are going to enjoy. For the 8th episode of For A' That Andrew and myself were joined by Ian Smart who it is fair to say, is not of the same mind as Andrew and I regarding independence. We started off about whether Salmond is losing his mojo and whether it matters or not, and also if Nicola Sturgeon's standing is being aided or hindered by the controversial figure that is Salmond (as an aside, I for one have never figured out precisely why people find him a controversial figure but hey ho). Andrew and Ian got into a very interesting legal discussion on cutbacks in legal aid and the problems this is causing/will cause. Gay marriage and the various ructions (actual or perceived) surrounding the debate was another topic, as were the recent protests regarding flags in Belfast and Glasgow. We even found time to give a (real) suggestion about where struggling graduates might find some work. This is the second last episode before we take a break over Christmas (The Scottish Independence Podcast will continue but For A' That is taking a wee break over the period). Therefore, our next episode will be the last episode of the year and will be a kind of review of the year. Are there any stories you would like us to bring up? Let us know. The most popular sport in our country is still football by far and whether we like it or not, there are strong political undercurrents to what goes on in the stadiums. Although players certainly get too much publicity, fans are often shunted to the side and treated as 2nd class citizens. Therefore, with such a momentous decision coming up for Scotland in 2014, those in favour of a Yes vote would be making a grave error if they ignored the discussions on the subject that are taking place in the stadiums and between the supporters that make up a large part of the population of Scotland. In that light, for the Scottish Independence Podcast I have decided to do an occasional series with supporters from as many different teams as possible to find out what discussions are taking place around the stadiums and in the clubs and how this might affect the referendum. They won't be consecutive, just mixed in with the other ones. If football isn't your thing don't worry as we won't be talking about the matches themselves. For the first of these I spoke to Krys Kujawa who is the host of the Celtic podcast The Paradise Report. We talked about how approaching football supporters as a block group all with the same opinions is an error. We talked about how the situation looks among the Celtic support and some of the historical and current reasons for that situation and also what might be done to persuade more of them to vote yes. It was also necessary to talk about what many feel is the increasing criminilisation of football supporters. Hope you enjoy it. Another quartet for this week’s For A’ That podcast. This time the group comprised Andrew (or “him”), poet, activist and Bella Caledonia co-editor Kevin Williamson and Rory Scothorne who was a co-founder of the National Collective. We discussed the ongoing problems with Creative Scotland. This became a larger discussion about the cultural scene in Scotland and even the British Isles. We didn’t think Jack Straw knows what he is talking about. We also had a word about how some artists and writers have been choosing sides in the indy debate and why some may feel reluctant to do so. Nicola Sturgeon’s speech from this week was a topic and seemed to meet with broad approval. We discussed some of the interesting themes the speech brought up. Our last topic was the announcement that more than a million pounds will be given to various academics to study the possible effects of independence. I cannot of course talk about this episode without mentioning Andrew’s flabbergasting suggestion about what should be done with unionists. http://lallandspeatworrier.blogspot.co.uk/ http://nationalcollective.com/ https://twitter.com/williamsonkev https://twitter.com/ScotlandThinks https://twitter.com/mgreenwell https://twitter.com/PeatWorrier http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/…
FIFTY episodes! Yes, I know it says 24 up there but if you count For A' That and the couple of little specials, this one makes fifty. That being the case I'd like to say thanks to all the guests, the people who have helped to promote it, the people who tune in every week and those who put it on FB and tweet it and whatever the latest new-fangled thing is. The help is much appreciated. Also thanks to those of you who have donated a little to help us out with the costs that come up from time to time. If you'd like to help out with that then the button is up on the right of my blog page (link below). Anyway, for this 50th episode I was joined by Stuart Braithwaite who is the guitarist from the band Mogwai, who I am sure most of you have heard of. We talked about what convinced Stuart of the need for independence, that little song they wrote regarding Thatcher, and much more. Stuart talked about his discomfort with the mud-slinging and negativity in the debate. Did The Proclaimers open things up for Scottish mainstream musicians to sing in their own accents? Have the Yes campaign been too nicey nicey so far? Would getting a bit more aggressive help? I also took the opportunity to vent a little about Bono and Geldof and we discussed how scary the lurch towards UKIP is. Finally we got on to what artists and musicians and so on can contribute to the debate. Hope you enjoy… LINKS https://twitter.com/plasmatron https://twitter.com/mgreenwell https://twitter.com/mogwaiband http://mogwai.sandbag.uk.com/lesrevenants/ http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com…
This episode is, as I was informed by probably incorrect social commentators, what the kids used to call a "mash-up" about fifteen years ago.BJKX5rSCEAA3MmY.jpg large There is a bit of campaigning around the subject of International Worker's Day itself, musical breaks from Dick Gaughan, David Rovics and others. There are also pieces from Noam Chomsky, Christina McKelvie MSP, Cat Boyd, Kevin Williamson, Doug Daniel and Angus Robertson MP. I won't say anymore. Hope you enjoy... For episode 23 of The Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Jonathon Shafi. He is a co-founder of the Radical Indy group and a contributor to different sites, including Bella Caledonia. We talked about the opportunities that the left see in Independence, more specifically, how an Independent Scotland could not only improve things for the people that lived there, but also be a beacon to other nations. We got on to what sometimes seems a confused position from some on the left, on the responsibility groups in one nation have towards one another and how best they could support each other. And of course we obviously got on to the Radical Indy group itself and how it got started, how it organises and how in some ways it dovetails with the official Yes campaign and in other ways no. For episode 22 of the For A' That podcast Andrew and I were joined by New Statesman contributor James Maxwell and Huffington Post blogger and Labour Party member Andrew Smith. The Labour party was the focus of a large part of the discussion. More specifically, the couple of interviews that Johann Lamont did this week and her speech at the conference. This became a more general discussion on some of the woes of that party in the post-devolution era. We also discussed their new Truth Team and what that says about politics in this country. Some of us felt this had a kind of Orwellian overtone to it, others felt it represented the Americanisation of politics in Scotland and the UK and is reminiscent of American style attack ads. Devo-somethings were also a topic. With the three Better Together parties now all backing some form of further devolution, will they be able to come up with a unified plan. Furthermore, would further devolution damage or in fact strengthen the SNP's hand. Back on Labour, is the idea of more devolution causing a problem between the Westminster party and the Holyrood one? Just a couple of nice bits for you that I never managed to wedge into the podcasts somehow. Reuploading this as it was taken down as we had to rejig our spreaker account and there wasn't enough space for this episode at the time.
For episode 22 of The Scottish Independence Podcast, I spoke with Nighet Nasim Riaz who is a PhD student, SNP activist, member of Women for Indy and avid people-watcher. We spoke about her PhD and about what convinced her, as someone who had lived in England prior to coming to Scotland, of the case for Indy. We also spoke about the work that Women For Indy have been doing around the country and what effects we hope it might have. The recent SNP conference, which she attended, was another topic of discussion as was what attracted her to join that party. The debate going on in the Asian community was a small topic. Is it any different from the debate among other people in the country, and if so, why should it be? Finally, the effect of having mostly male panels on political talk shows came up. A couple of more general announcements, the April Fools episode seemed to go down rather well with almost 1400 of you having a listen to that so thanks again to all the contributors and we hope everyone that heard it enjoyed it. If you are feeling generous and would like to make a little donation to the podcast you can do that through the donate button on the top right of this page or over at Andrew's page. I regret to announce that due to outside pressures, the Scottish Independence and For A' That podcasts can no longer continue. This isn't a decision that has been reached lightly and we put together a final episode to explain our reasoning. Thanks for all the help you gave us while the project continued and we are happy you were able to enjoy some our output before the situation became untenable. For the 20th episode of the For A' That podcast, Andrew and I were joined by Caron Lindsay from the Liberal Democrats and Douglas McLellan, who is possibly the most right-wing member of the Green Party. I was also joined by six new additions which prevented me from making an answer decently at one point, but there you go. On the menu this week were immigration policy and how things might be different in that regard. Foreign policy was also up for discussion again, and it got a bit heated. Ruth Davidson's recent conversion to the cause of further devolution came up - what was behind this volte-face? If the better together parties came up with a semi-plausible/believable devolution plan, how would this affect the debate? Do the SNP have a tendency to centralisation? This and some of their other motivations and policy pronouncements came under scrutiny. Douglas also took the opportunity to explain why he ended up in the same party as Patrick Harvie. Finally, Caron had an 80s party to go to, so that explains the introductory song.…
Yesterday, for episode 21 of the Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Scottish writer Alan Bissett. Alan is the author of numerous books and plays but made an entrance onto the political scene, and in particular the debate surrounding the Independence Referendum, with the publication of his poem Vote Britain, which almost immediately went viral. Since then he has been speaking at many campaign events as well as writing for websites such as Bella Caledonia and National Collective. In our conversation we mulled over why Alan supports Indy, how Vote Britain was written and the reaction to it and about the difficulties that expressing things in a way that might be considered too Scottish might bring for a writer or artist. This neatly led us on to the manufactured hullaballoo regarding Alasdair Gray’s comments on the lack of Scots leading Scottish cultural institution and some ideas on James Kelman too. Furthermore, we talked about Alan entering into some debates on the subject of feminism and how this can be tricky territory for those born with a y chromosome. Finally, we talked about what Alan has coming up at the Edinburgh festival in the summer. Hope you enjoy… LINKS http://alanbissett.com/ http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com https://twitter.com/mgreenwell https://twitter.com/alanbissett…
For the 19th episode of the For A' That podcast Andrew and I were joined by Stewart Lochhead of the 3 Men In A Blog site. This week there was a lot going on down Holyrood way, from the usual shenanigans at First Minister's Questions to the Iraq war debate and finally the announcement of the referendum date as September 18th 2014. On the announcement we discussed not any historical significance the date itself may have, but rather the lack of respect in the tone of some of the members of the Holyrood parliament towards the announcement and indeed referendum itself. Andrew gave an example from his own history as to why this tone was a little off. On the Iraq war debate, we had a think about whether the claims of some members that the whole thing was orchestrated only in order to make the SNP look statesmanlike before the announcement of the date itself. Was it justified to have such a debate? Finally, we took a look at some of the polls that suggest that a majority wish to have all decisions about tax, spending and welfare made in Scotland. On the face of it, where's the difference between that and Independence? What would it take just to help people to make that final little jump? Finally, why do Better Together now have one more reason than the rest of us to dislike Barbara Streisand? Last Thursday, for episode 20 of The Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with the Rev Stu Campbell from the Wings Over Scotland website. That website has now become so popular it is not merely an observer of but could even be considered an actor on the Scottish political stage. Strangely, given that introduction, one of the things we talked about was the pretty poor behaviour of Scottish politician when they are (metaphorically at least) on the big stage. We also talked about the site itself and what was the motivation for it, and Stu filled some of that mysterious history of his too. Whether or not Yes Scotland should be trying to be more aggressive or not came up, as did the (mis)fortunes and (mis)adventures of Scottish Labour. We came up with some reasons to be optimistic even though polls aren't showing Indy in the lead yet - they didn't involve pandas. Finally, will some of the overtly pro-union media jump ship? Hope you enjoy...…
For the 18th episode of the For A' That podcast Andrew and I were joined once more by Natalie McGarry who is standing for the European Parliament this week. We discussed a rather unfair measure Europe seems to be imposing this week and for the second time in 3 weeks I was sort of accused of being wealthy. We then got on to Natalie's run at the European parliament and how she feels about it. Shetland's independence movement got a look in and we tried to see where all this was coming from. Andrew was more than a little bit concerned about the recent report regarding media regulation in Scotland and I think it is fair to say Natalie and I shared his concerns. Finally, we talked about where we thought the various parties and politicians actually stand on human rights issues and how much of it is just opportunism or hot air, or indeed both. The sound quality isn't magnificent in a couple of parts. Please send complaints to: The Get Bloody Decent Broadband As A National Right Committee If you want to know how that tune at the beginning really finished, I suggest you do a youtube search for "Vatican Broadside". For the 17th episode of the For A' That podcast, Andrew and I were joined by Lynda Williamson from the Newsnet Scotland site, and whom you may know as snowthistle. Up for discussion were Alistair Darling's problems with constitutions, why Lynda is considering going Green or not and the call for election observers to be brought in to observe the Scottish Referendum. We also talked about what difference it might make if they do come. This led on to a discussion of how the media influences people in their political opinions. We talked about our hopes for making Richard Branson just go away. This was part of a wider discussion on the oft-repeated (and not just in Scotland) claim that higher taxes would make business leaders leave the country. Andrew also had an interesting question as to whether or not public figures should be held to higher moral standards than mere mortals such as you and I. Finally, we talked about something silly we all got in our mailshots this week.…
For this unusually wednesdayed episode of For A' That, Andrew and I were joined by writer Pat Kane of Thoughtland. I believe he once had a band too. Up for discussion this week were the Luxembourg Foreign Minister's little intervention (or not), how offensive is the offensive behaviour bill, wee Dougie's speech this week and a more general look at the the media and how strange it seems that none of them seem willing to take the plunge and go Indy, even though this may reap some financial rewards. In the middle of all that, Andrew changes the normal question around at one point by asking what exactly Theresa May finds intolerable instead of what we usually ask which is "Exactly how intolerable is Theresa May?" Finally, at one point Andrew conjures up a hideous image but he shouldn't be so offended - a list of 100 best green bloggers once had me put directly beneath Peter Tatchell...which is not a place I'd ever imagined I'd find myself.…
For the 14th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Veronika Teudhope of Scottish CND. We talked about their recent decision to join the Yes campaign and about the history and aims of the organisation and some of the actions they are involved in and their parliamentary supporters. We also had a word about the SNP joining NATO debate. Hope you enjoy... https://twitter.com/ScottishCND http://www.banthebomb.org/ http://www.heraldscotland.com/politics/referendum-news/scots-cnd-backs-yes-campaign.19448929 https://twitter.com/mgreenwell…
Episode 6 of For A' That again features two guests along with Andrew Tickell and myself, Michael Greenwell. This time we were joined by Peter Geoghegan, a freelance journalist, and by Philip Challinor who is a writer and blogger. Up for discussion amongst other things were the Levenson enquiry, the media more generally, the rise of UKIP and a little discussion on just why the British state is so dead against the idea of Scotland leaving. We also did a bit of party-pooping with regard to St Andrew's day. Links... https://twitter.com/PeterKGeoghegan https://twitter.com/pchallinor https://twitter.com/PeatWorrier https://twitter.com/mgreenwell…
For the fifth episode of the For A' That podcast we have ventured into a new area for us in that we had a 4-way discussion. Joining myself and Andrew this time were former Scottish Socialist MSP Carolyn Leckie and Mike Small the editor of Bella Caledonia. We discussed the goings on at the Radical Indy conference in Glasgow last Saturday and some of the media coverage thereof, the idea of voter registration campaigns before the referendum and the murky world of funding gets a look in again. We also discussed the necessity of having a serious dialogue about gender in Scotland. We also briefly discussed THAT flier. All Aboard! Links https://twitter.com/carolynleckie http://bellacaledonia.org.uk/ http://lallandspeatworrier.blogspot.co.uk/ http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/…
For Episode 13 I spoke with Robin McAlpine who, amongst other things, is the editor of Scottish Left Review and the director of the advocacy group The Reid Foundation. Democracy was a big theme in the discussion and we spoke about the importance of mapping out the stages of the independence process and how democracy is key in every part of that. We also talked about the weakness of local democracy in Britain in general and Scotland in particular and how this is something that needs changing. Furthermore, we talked about the hollowing out of democracy that has been successfully carried out by the neoliberal institutions and why Scottish Independence will help to at least improve this situation. A very interesting point on why it is crucial not to allow cultural arguments to be removed from the Independence debate is in there somewhere as well. www.reidfoundation.org http://www.scottishleftreview.org/…
For A' That Episode 4 is now online. This time Andrew and myself were joined by Gary Dunion of, amongst other things, Bright Green Scotland. We talked about Starbucks and other hypothetical/alleged tax dodgers. We talked about the hypothetical/alleged removal of Palestinian flags from Celtic Supporters yesterday and the hypothetical/alleged police harassment of the group known as the Green Brigade. There is a link to their statement that I mentioned below. We also got on to some possible difficulties that the Civil Service might have over the referendum question and the recent non-but-we-could-if-we-wanted intervention of the House of Lords in the whole affair. The introductory song was provided by https://twitter.com/martylog LINKS http://brightgreenscotland.org/ https://twitter.com/garydunion http://www.thecelticnetwork.com/2012/11/16/green-brigade-upcoming-boycott/ http://www.monthehoops.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18343 https://twitter.com/PeatWorrier https://twitter.com/mgreenwell…
For episode 12 of The Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with MSP and co-convenor of the Scottish Green Party, Patrick Harvie. We discussed the decision of the Greens to join the Yes campaign, some of the goings-on in Holyrood, the environmental advantages that Independence will bring, an increased focus on giving real powers to local government and much more besides. Hope you enjoy it. http://www.yesscotland.net/ https://twitter.com/patrickharvie https://twitter.com/mgreenwell http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/…

The Scottish Independence Podcast

Delighted to announce the beginning of a new companion podcast to the Scottish Independence Podcast. The For A' That podcast isn't an interview format, it's more of a discussion of the week's events, issues, rants, ramblings & absurdities relating to the upcoming referendum and Scottish politics more generally. We'll try to put them out every Sunday. In this first episode it is myself with Andrew Tickell or Lallands Peat Worrier. We chat about the legal kerfuffle over EU membership, the prisoners voting issue and touch on the rules that are going to be laid down regarding the financing of the campaigns. Hope you enjoy! http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/ http://lallandspeatworrier.blogspot.co.uk/ https://twitter.com/PeatWorrier https://twitter.com/mgreenwell…
Did you know that home insurance premiums in Scotland are artificially high because Scotland is part of the union? I didn't. You can find out why and much more by listening to ScotIndyPod episode 10 where I talk with (Dr) Rebecca McKinlay about the possible environmental benefits of an independent Scotland. We also talk about fisheries, The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency and many other things besides. We also had a few words about Donald Trump but I'm sure you have said much worse about him at home (I know I have).
