Investment management is one of my favorite topics! The second is taxes. . There are 2 big myths about how financial advisors manage a client's investment that are good practices for you to follow when building your own portfolio: . 1. Think like an investor (hold investments for the long term) and not like a trader (hold investments for the short term) . 2. Do not create a portfolio of random stocks. Use Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), or Mutual Funds instead to diversify the investments between equity and fixed income. . How to build your investment portfolio? . The easiest way is to get a target date fund. Everything that needs to happen occurs behind the scenes just by owning the fund. It's a great way to go! . But if you do want to take it up a notch and create a diversified portfolio with equity and fixed income then the first thing you'll need to know is your risk tolerance to investing . That's done by getting a Risk Tolerance Questionnaire. The outcome will be your risk tolerance (High, Medium-High, Medium, etc) and that will correlate to the type of split your portfolio should be at (80% equity/ 20% fixed income, 70/30, 60/40, etc) . Retirement planning is one of the most common things a financial advisor helps with. . What would your answer be to "At what age do you want to retire?" The typical answer would be when a person can take their social security at the Full Retirement Age. . Now, what would your answer be to "When do you want to make work optional?" This answer could be totally different, and if it is, I want you to use the younger age for planning. . Now that you have a target age to retire, the next thing you need to know is how much will you need in income every month. The easiest way to start is based on how much you're getting every month gross. . This doesn't mean that this is the full amount coming out of your investments, because social security, pension, rental income, or any other sources of income will help. The difference between what you want and what is not covered from these sources of income is what will be coming out of your investment account every month. . Two calculations you'll need to do: 1. How much you'll have when you retire 2. Take that amount and see if that will be enough . If what you're doing will accomplish your retirement goal, then that's amazing. If it doesn't then there are 3 variables you can modify: 1. Retire later 2. Spend less in retirement 3. Now that you know what you want to accomplish, what do you do with them? . I want you to put your goals in priority order and number them. The reason you want to do this is to help you prioritize where your dollars go. . Also if something out of the blue comes up, that wasn't planned for, you'll be able to ask yourself if spending money for this unplanned call is worth not you achieving the top three goals that are so important to you. . Now that you know how much cash you have at the end of the month you can allocate dollars starting with your most important goal. . When I got divorced in 2016 I remember telling my therapist/energy healer that I didn't know what gratitude felt like. That was a massive epiphany! . So how did I go from not feeling gratitude to feeling it? . I started by putting my hand on my heart and feeling the pressure on my heart space. I started small like feeling grateful for things that didn't depend on a person or money, or anything that would throw me off (energetically). I was grateful for my arms to be able to do things. I was grateful for my sight to navigate my surroundings. . The feeling of gratitude is powerful! The feeling creates energy that shifts life around you in your favor, even parts of your life that aren't going as well will also start shifting. . I feel gratitude as energy flowing through my body to my heart chakra, and then that deep calm grounded feeling of love for whatever it is I'm thinking about, it could be a person, situation/ event/ experience, or thing. . Today's show is the 3rd episode of the DIY Financial Planning series, and it's about writing down what a fulfilled life looks and feels like for you . If you're not really clear about your goals, or if you want to get a deeper answer look at episode 3 for the guided visualization . Once you have an idea of your goals WRITE THEM DOWN! If there is one thing you take away from this show is that. Why is writing down your goals (on paper or electronically) so important? Because we have free will and Infinite Intelligence (God, Higher Self, Angels, Divine, the Universe) whatever it is you connect with, cannot interfere with our free will until we ask for it, and writing it down is a way of asking . Writing it down is a form of manifestation; first is the thought . Here's a simple layout: -- Career -- Experiences (ex: travel, learn to play golf) -- Material (ex: buy a home, buy a car) . The only constant thing is change, so give yourself permission to change your goals as life ebbs and flows . Finally, if you have a strategy please run it by a financial planner that charges hourly (like RADIANT Wealth Planning) to make sure that you have all the tips, tricks, and tweaks to make sure you're set up for success. Here's a question to ponder . . . . If you knew that when you died there will be a review of your life, not of what you've accomplished, but of how you've made people feel. How would that change your interactions? . I'm not talking about how you open doors for little old ladies, or the compliments you give, of course, that's part of it, but there is something deeper. That something is your energy and how it makes others feel . Do you uplift people when you directly interact with them by bringing your bright loving light to the interaction? Did you make them feel amazingly whole when you were together? . Do you walk into a room and people's spirits get lighter and more joyous? . You have no control over how other people feel, show up, behave, or anything else, but you do have control over how bright and beautiful you want to shine your loving, compassionate, and kind light. . Part 2 of the DIY Financial Planning series is related to budgeting, but this is not the type of budgeting where I tell you to stop drinking your daily late . Now that you know where you're money is flowing to I want you to look into each of those categories to see if there are dollars being spent that aren't a value add. For example, noticing that you buy more groceries than you use and toss a lot of them away. Or keeping a cable subscription but you rarely watch the channels. . None of these are a value add to you, they don't add value to your life so do something different. . The goal is to be able to reduce your monthly expense by $100 and put it towards a LONG-TERM goal. This is the most important part! It has to be long-term because we have plenty of instant gratifications that we forgot to learn how to build up a tolerance to saving for a goal that you won't experience for years in the future. . We kick off the DIY Financial Planning series with Cash Flow; where is your cash flowing to once it comes into your account? . I know, this is not very exciting and maybe daunting to do, but it's so necessary! Not to make you feel bad about how you spend your money, but to manage the money that comes to you. . Money is hard-earned and it likes to be managed, that is a sign of appreciation for it and gratitude, which means you'll get more of it. . There are several benefits starting with Cash Flow: 1. You'll see subscriptions you no longer use but have forgotten to cancel 2. You'll see categories of spending and their amounts 3. You'll change what's not important to you . Micro-Actions --> Week 1 1. Download activities from all accounts for 1-4 months in CSV (Excel) format 2. Put all activities into one spreadsheet . Micro-Actions --> Week 2 1. I've done a lot of shows on having a radiant life, I want to now balance it out with having radiant money. . When you work with a financial planner they'll typically do the investments but they also do planning so you can get those financial goals, or better said, goals that need finances accomplished. You can do your own financial planning but it does take a commitment and knowledge on your end. . Financial planning is continuous work because there's so much that can be done, it's not something you could do over a weekend. Give it a year and even then life will change things on you. I've heard a lot of people say that they've recently gone through, or are going through, a spiritual awakening and that makes me so happy! . What does that mean? It means that we tapped into ourselves, our spirit, the source part of ourselves, and if you're lucky, it will shine a light on your ego, insecurities, and beliefs that are limiting your ability to show up and be the person you intended to be when you came to earth. . These limiting beliefs keep you small. It might have been something you've seen a parent do, or it might have been something you've developed to protect yourself. . But now is the time to shed that layer! . Do you have a limiting belief about money that sounds like this? "Money is evil", "loving money makes you greedy", or "money doesn't grow on trees"? . Take a step back and ask yourself what do you believe when you read that. Ask as if you're asking your friend and you're truly curious what they have to say. You're not judging the answer, you're just observing what comes up. . Money likes to be appreciated, so when you have a belief that money is evil then you're limiting your opportunities, not just to be rich, but opportunities that require an exchange of energy (your work in exchange for money, which is also energy). . The way a person defines spirituality comes in so many ways. What does it mean to be spiritual is so personal and is based on the journey the person has been on and where they're at, at that time. . I see being spiritual as having two components; dropping the ego, and consciousness awareness. . What exactly is the ego that we need to drop? It's when we feel superior, or proving something (like knowledge and self-worth) . What looks like ego but isn't? Self-love and self-worth. . When I talk about consciousness awareness it's taking a step back from our human-ness (which is a micro view of looking at things) and see things from a macro view. We are so much more than what we're doing, and there is so much more going on that we aren't aware of, but what if we become aware of our consciousness. When you read the title what do you think? . Do you feel a tightness in your chest? Or any feeling or thought against that statement? I'm not talking about worshipping money or putting it on a pedestal, or any kind of egoic kind of love. . I've mentioned a guided visualization before and shared it in Episode 3 . If you've done it, you're probably wondering what's next. It's great to have this deep insight given to you by your Elder Self, the you that is 97 /98+ years old. The You that has lived a life following his/her heart's calling and soul's mission. So what do you do with that information? 1. Write it all down! This was a gift that we must honor by writing everything down. This includes how you felt, how your Elder Self felt, the surroundings, etc. 2. Next, write down the obstacles you feel you have to accomplish this life that your Elder Self lived. Please remember, that you're Elder Self had so many years to accomplish this and you're not going to do it in a few short years. 3. The third category to write down is what keeps you up at night. This seems like an oddball to add but you'll start seeing patterns. 4. Go back to the list where you wrote down the life your Elder Self lived and pick one thing that stands out. And ask yourself questions you would like an answer to by starting with the phrase "Did my Elder Self share..." For example "Did my Elder Self share how many employees were working at this company she built?", "Did my Elder Self share in what career he was involved in?" 5. If an answer doesn't come to mind then you're Elder Self didn't share an answer to that question, and that's ok! The more you visit your Elder Self the more information will be shared, and different information as well. Your Elder Self only shares what you're ready for, and sometimes won't share anything at all because it's something you need to experience on your own. 6. See you if you can group common themes. Looking back at the episodes that have been released, Ep 2 - Merging spirituality and financial planning, has been the top show listened to and viewed on YouTube. So there's something there, there's a curiosity about the coming of these two. So let's expand on it a little more. . If you've worked with a financial advisor before the first question you've probably been asked is "when do you want to retire?" And then "what goals would you like to accomplish?" . Have we all been born to have the same goals?!?! To retire at 65, and then start living the "dream life", and maybe along the way buy or renovate a home, buy a car, send the kids to college, and go on vacation. . This is what Spiritual Financial Planning is . . . it's finding out the theme for your existence (your soul's purpose) by doing the visualization that I guide you on (see episode #3), and then creating a Journey Map with financial and non-financial steps to get there. . Let me make it real. . . let's say Sally met with a traditional financial advisor and the first thing she's asked: "when do you want to retire, Sally?" This is a retirement planner. Now let's say Sally and I met, we start with the Guided Visualization and we find out that she wants to make work optional in 5 years (not 25!) and has a heart's calling to set up a non-profit for injured guineapigs. . Very different approach to financial planning! I want this year to be the year that changed your life. . Why do I care so much about you? Someone I never met? Because the better you are the better humanity is. I care about your heart and the light that shines from there. The more your light shines the more it helps humanity. . You could be intentional in how you help others with your light, and your divine light will help people without you knowing of it. . So what is this like I speak of? haha Imagine light in the middle of your chest and how you feel it is unique to you. Mine feels expansive, bright, love, and joy. . How do you make your light shine bright? Here are a few tips and tricks. Think of 1-3 fun things that you say you want to do every year but it never happens. Is there a road trip in your state you always talk about? Then think of 1 thing you think about frequently that's heavy on your heart and you know should get done, like talk to a financial advisor haha For the fun thing, I want you to visualize it playing out. This is not supposed to be a big task, do it in the shower or sitting down on the couch while you're having your coffee. Imagine yourself packing the car, people coming together and getting ready, reaching your first destination and getting out of the car and stretching your legs. Next, write down one micro-step to be done no later than a week. A micro-step for the road trip example would be an idea of where the first stop would be. This is not making a decision! It's just thinking about ideas. I want you to do the same thing for the topic that's heavy on your heart. A micro-step for reaching out to a financial advisor would be thinking if you want somebody in your town or anywhere in the nation. It's not making a decision it's just posing the question to yourself and thinking of that. Happy New Year! . Here we are, about to start another new year, and if you're anything like me I always feel like a new year is a fresh start for something amazing. . Are you ready to make 2022 the year that changed your life? In a good way that is haha. . Your energy creates life , so if you don't like the life you have, or you're wanting to make it a tad better, then it's your energy you need to work on to start. How is your life, is how your energy is. . What makes up our energy, well it's our thoughts, beliefs (conscious and unconscious), and feelings. A great way to learn your subconscious unconscious beliefs is to journal. Before you roll your eyes hear me out... . Find one day a week where you can journal and can be consistent, for me it's Sunday mornings. Journal as long or short you want, with only thinking what has gone on in the past week . You can write about anything, what happened during the week, how you felt about it, what bummed you out, or what amazed you. It doesn't matter, as long as you write once a week and it's only for the past week. . Then once a year read all the journal entries and write a synopsis entry . I do this from Christmas to New Year. . What about this is so powerful? When you read the journal entries at the end of the year you'll notice the tone of your energy, even when you write an uplifting note, you might still be able to identify underlining insecurities or beliefs that you didn't even know were there. . The most beautiful thing that comes out of this is seeing the growth you have gone through. I promise you, when you recognize the growth you'll feel so proud of yourself! . Here's another part to having a fulfilled life, it takes effort! Just like wanting to build a business but not doing anything about it won't create the business, having a fulfilled life and not doing anything about it wouldn't change anything, and containing to do that year over year, you'll wake up one day at 90 regretting you didn't put a little more effort into living life. . A lot of people have left their job to start a new business this year, if that's you here are a few things to do to have "all your ducks in a row" so that you're not scrambling come tax time, which can also save you money. Talking about taxes and bookkeeping can be intense and deep, so this show is focused on self-employed folks that are either registered with the state as an LLC or not registered at all, and don't have a business partner. 1. Use a system to track your business income and expenses I would recommend using an online system like Quick Books Online, or some other tool. I personally use Quick Books Online and that's the one I'm most comfortable with, but there are a lot of great ones out there. Why use an online version? Because you're more likely to get updates and upgraded features that can make the bookkeeping process easier. 2. What expense categories should you use? A good starting point is to match the expenses to what's listed on the Schedule C tax form . 3. Do you need to issue 1099s? Did you pay $600 or more for services? This includes people who have an LLC and partnerships (excluding S- or C-Corporations) and is paid from your bank account, not a credit card (the credit card company will issue a 1099 if needed). You'll need to give them their 1099 by February 1st and submit it to the IRS by March 1st. 4. Do you use your personal car for work? I'm going to highly recommend you use an app that tracks miles, but if you haven't done that this year then look at your calendar and add the miles for the places you've gone to related to your business. Don't forget to add up the expenses for vehicle maintenance. 5. Did you use a part of your home for business? There are two ways to calculate this: Simplified Option or Regular Method. The Simplified Option takes the square foot of the dedicated office space x a rate that's given by the IRS to calculate the expense amount. Regular Method is tracking each allowable deductible expense separately. Have you really thought about why there is the saying "it's the journey, not the destination"? I was meditating and my Higher Self shared a deeper understanding of this saying, it was so profound it made everything make sense, and the feeling and question of "when is this goal (fill in the blank) going to happen" no longer makes sense to ask. My Higher Self explained that we came for the experience it takes to achieve a goal. The goal isn't to get to the goal solely, it's the journey to the goal we want to experience. Think of it this way... when you go on vacation you're not going to think about getting to the end of the vacation. You're looking forward to experiencing discovering a new place, being a tourist, and doing touristy things. Well, that's the exact same thing with life! When was the last time you decided to take a day off to ponder? Not on a weekend amidst chores. I mean a full day where you honor yourself and ponder where you're at in life, where you want to go, and if you're in alignment with that life, or are you just wishing for that life to happen. I've been asking myself these questions lately. I have bits and pieces of the answers but I've never written it down clearly. The same thing applies to the business; I have Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that I track monthly, but I've never written down what I want to create for my career life. Starting this month I'll be doing a Full Moon Ritual . This is an entire day off work on the day of the full moon. Since I'll be away from my clients and business for an entire day, I want my time to be intentional . Start with these 4 rules: Cadence - when will you do your ritual (monthly, quarterly, specific day (example: last Friday of the month, on a full or new moon, etc.)? Time - how long will you dedicate (all day, half a day, 1 hour, 30 minutes, etc.)? Don't allow interruptions - this is a time to honor yourself! Be intentional - set an intention (agenda) for what you'll be doing This is not a time to check out and watch T.V. or to create more "to-dos". This is about creating a life with INTENTION by shifting and upping your vibration and having inspired action. Inspired actions are inspiration from your higher-self. To follow the 4th rule Being Intentional , I set 2 things that I'll do every month, and the other items will change based on what I'm inspired for what I'm needing then. Have fun with this! How do you merge spirituality with financial planning? Believe it or not, spirituality and financial planning can go together, and actually, if you want to plan for a life well-lived, well guess what, you really do want to include your spirit, your soul's mission into the planning. My deepest belief is that we are all born for a reason, whether we know our purpose or not . . . how cool would it be to create a plan (and yes a financial plan) once you know what your heart's calling is?
