When a young Eva Kollisch arrives as a refugee in New York in 1940, she finds a community among socialists who share her values and idealism. She soon discovers ‘the cause’ isn’t as idyllic as it seems. Little does she know this is the beginning of a lifelong commitment to activism and her determination to create radical change in ways that include belonging, love and one's full self. In addition to Eva Kollisch’s memoirs Girl in Movement (2000) and The Ground Under My Feet (2014), LBI’s collections include an oral history interview with Eva conducted in 2014 and the papers of Eva’s mother, poet Margarete Kolllisch, which document Eva’s childhood experience on the Kindertransport. Learn more at www.lbi.org/kollisch . Exile is a production of the Leo Baeck Institute , New York | Berlin and Antica Productions . It’s narrated by Mandy Patinkin. Executive Producers include Katrina Onstad, Stuart Coxe, and Bernie Blum. Senior Producer is Debbie Pacheco. Associate Producers are Hailey Choi and Emily Morantz. Research and translation by Isabella Kempf. Sound design and audio mix by Philip Wilson, with help from Cameron McIver. Theme music by Oliver Wickham. Voice acting by Natalia Bushnik. REVISE GCSE Geography - A podcast by Seneca Learning

In this episode we discuss plate margins, which are areas where tectonic plates meet. It identifies three primary types: destructive, constructive, and conservative. Destructive margins involve one plate sliding under another. Constructive margins feature plates moving apart, allowing magma to rise. Conservative margins occur where plates slide past each other. The movement along these margins, particularly at destructive and conservative boundaries, can lead to earthquakes due to built-up pressure and friction. In this episode we will cover: Mass movement refers to the downhill displacement of soil and rock, influenced by weathering, erosion, and gravity. Rockfalls occur when cliff material breaks and falls. In contrast, slides involve the straight-line movement of material down a slope. Slumps , another type of mass movement, are characterized by movement along a curved path. Over time, shifts in a cliff's center of gravity can lead to instability and ultimately, mass movement events. 1 The Challenge of Natural Hazards: Factors Affecting Hazard Risk 🚨 GCSE Geography Learning & Revision 4:44
In this episode, we’ll explore the factors influencing hazard risk and the likelihood of a natural hazard becoming a disaster. We’ll discuss how population density plays a key role in increasing the chances of people being affected by a hazard. We’ll also examine how different populations vary in their ability to cope with natural hazard risks and disasters. Finally, we’ll consider how this ability shapes the overall impact of a natural hazard on a community. In this episode, we’ll explore tectonic plates and their role in shaping the Earth's crust. We’ll discuss how these large sections of the crust move due to the semi-solid mantle beneath them. We’ll examine the differences between continental plates, which are thicker and lighter, and oceanic plates, which are thinner and denser, allowing them to subduct. Finally, we’ll clarify the terms plate margins and plate boundaries , explaining how they both refer to the areas where tectonic plates meet. 1 The Changing Economic World: Stages of the Demographic Transition Model 📈 GCSE Geography Learning & Revision 6:34
In this episode, we’ll explore the Demographic Transition Model and how birth and death rates change as a country develops. We’ll discuss Stage 1, where pre-industrial societies experience high birth and death rates. We’ll examine Stage 2, marked by declining death rates due to improved healthcare and sanitation, while birth rates remain high. We’ll then look at Stage 3, where industrialisation leads to falling birth rates. Finally, we’ll consider Stages 4 and 5, where developed countries have low birth and death rates, and in some cases, a declining population. In this episode, we’ll explore the differences between constructive and destructive waves and their impact on coastlines. We’ll discuss how constructive waves are low, less frequent, and have a strong swash that deposits material, helping to build up beaches. We’ll contrast this with destructive waves, which are taller, more frequent, and have a powerful backwash that erodes the coastline. Finally, we’ll examine how these opposing wave types shape coastal environments over time. Don't miss out on subscribing for more educational content tailored to help you succeed in your exams. 1 The Changing Economic World: Classifying Countries Based on Wealth 🌍 GCSE Geography Learning & Revision 4:14
In this episode, we’ll explore a common method of categorising countries based on wealth. We’ll discuss the three primary classifications: Higher Income Countries (HICs), Lower Income Countries (LICs), and Newly Emerging Economies (NEEs). We’ll examine how HICs have high GNI per capita, education levels, and quality of life, while LICs face lower figures in these areas. We’ll also consider NEEs—countries that have transitioned from LIC status through significant economic growth. Finally, we’ll reflect on the limitations of this classification system, highlighting how national averages can oversimplify complex economic realities. In this episode, we’ll explore the six major biomes that define global ecosystems, shaped by climate and latitude. We’ll start with tundra biomes in high latitudes, characterised by permafrost and limited vegetation. Next, we’ll look at grasslands closer to the equator, where wet and dry seasons occur and grasses dominate. We’ll then examine temperate deciduous forests in mid-latitudes, which experience four distinct seasons and feature trees that lose their leaves in winter. Moving on, we’ll discuss tropical rainforests near the tropics, known for their hot, humid conditions and dense vegetation. Finally, we’ll consider hot deserts near the equator, which are arid with extreme temperature variations, and polar biomes, freezing environments located near the poles.
