Earthquakes, the Távora Affair, the Marquis of Pombal, French Revolution, Napoleonic Wars. Who was a witness of all of this? Our one and only, Leonor de Almeida, Marquise of Alorna (1750-1839), a remarkable figure that defied the limits imposed to her. Locked in a convent for the first 18 years of her life - after one of the most impressive political scandals of Portugal - she soon broke the walls of her captivity but also of what was expected of her gender. With a life spanning almost over a century, Leonor travels the roads of Europe, always guided by poetry, books, philosophy, trailing the route of the Enlightenment. Oh, and Mozart is there too! Feliciana de Milão (1632-1705) was a mysterious nun, powerhouse, writer, public letter maker! With unknown origins, Feliciana joins a convent aged 30 and goes on to take part in political discussions of the seventeenth century like very few women did. Her relationship with the King makes her a target but her wit sees her navigating the minefield of baroque politics. Between nuneaters and brotherly love, apologies but there’s a part of the episode in which André whispers - cute but that was clearly added later to give some more insight into the foundling wheels - fitting with the theme!
