This week we welcome singer Geoff Rickly of the band Thursday to The Record Process to discuss the making of their legendary third studio album War All The Time . Officially released on September 13th, 2003, War All The Time marked the bands departure from Victory records, who had released the bands critically acclaimed previous album Full Collapse. War All The Time was recorded at New Jersey-based production house Big Blue Meenie Recording with producer and New York hardcore veteran Sal Villanueva at the helm. Throughout our conversation, Geoff shares some of his favorite memories from the writing and recording of the album, as well as the challenges he faces as a vocalist both in the studio and on the road at that time. He talks about what it was like tracking the album in a studio he had grown up interning at, and the visual elements he took inspiration from as a lyricist at that time. Geoff explains what it’s like listening back to the record over 20 years after recording it, and describes why he believes the period between the recording and releasing of the album is so special for artists. 6:25 - a Really hard relationship with the record 23:00 - Song map for War All The Time 37:10 - A notebook kind of person 55:05 - The only time a record belongs to you If you enjoyed this episode, please consider joining our supportors club with a small donation HERE Visit us at TheRecordProcess.com for more info and be sure to join our mailing list for exclusive offers and updates Try AudioMovers "LISTENTO" for Free NOW - Visit AudioMovers.com and get moving now! This week on the show, we invited guitarist Joe Mabry and drummer Scott Fisher of the band Capstan to discuss the writing and recording of their latest album The Mosaic , which was released on May 24th, 2024 via Fearless Records. We talk about how the process for this album differed from previous efforts, and how self-producing an album can be a double-edged sword. They share how the concept for the album came about, what it was like assembling the gear necessary to self-produce the album, and the nuance required to dial in their approach to tracking guitars in such a precise genre. We talk about how the band identified creative formulas that worked for them, the technical skills they picked up during the process of making this album, and how they pulled in some talented friends along the way. 25:00 - Getting the gear to record by themselves 28:15 - Tracking guitars 37:20 - How the Mosaic idea came If you enjoyed this episode, please consider joining our supportors club with a small donation HERE Visit us at TheRecordProcess.com for more info and be sure to join our mailing list for exclusive offers and updates Try AudioMovers "LISTENTO" for Free NOW - Visit AudioMovers.com and get moving now! This week we share our conversation with Canadian songwriter and lead guitarist Dave Baksh - better known by the name "Brownsound" to fans of his band Sum 41 . We sat down with Dave to discuss the making of Sum 41s eight and final studio album Heaven :x: Hell, which was a double album released on March 29, 2024, by Rise Records . We explore how the band decided to honor its legacy by dividing the album into two discs; the first disc, Heaven, which features a return to the pop-punk style of the band's early career, and the second disc, Hell, which follows the heavy metal sound the band pursued in subsequent years. You’ll hear Dave’s thoughts on everything from crafting the perfect guitar solo to why he finds recording remotely with his bandmates so beneficial to the process these days. He also describes the longstanding chemistry between the bands singer Deryck Whibley and producer Mike Green, and explains just how important that kind of trust has become in pulling the very best out of the band as songwriters. 8:10 - "We had no idea this was going to be the last record..." 11:50 - Derycks songwriting model 18:10 - The perfect guitar solo to Dave 45:35 - Recording remotely If you enjoyed this episode, please consider joining our supportors club with a small donation HERE Visit us at TheRecordProcess.com for more info and be sure to join our mailing list for exclusive offers and updates Try AudioMovers "LISTENTO" for Free NOW - Visit AudioMovers.com and get moving now! On this episode of The Record Process, we speak with singer Devin Papadol of the band Honey Revenge . Devin lays out a ton of details about the backstory of the band, explaining how she began working with guitarist Donny Llyod, how their relationship with collaborators like KJ Strock and Zach Jones developed, and even how they tackled the difficult task of coming up with a fitting name for the project. Devin talks about the confining nature of genre labels, and how she works to find balance within her lyric-writing. We discuss why she finds it so important to check your ego as a songwriter and artist, and how she harnessed the power of FOMO and burnout to drive her further lyrically on this album. We hear she struggled with patience early on, how the band adapted to changing timelines and rollout plans for the album, and even how the band approached putting on their promotional hat to create visibility for their album across social media once it was finished. 6:50 - The origin story of Honey Revenge 42:40 - Starting to piece together an album 57:20 - Putting on our promotional hat post album finish CLICK HERE to submit your album via Groover to be featured on an upcoming episode of The Record Process this season! This week our journey brings us down south as we chat with a few of the members of Orlando, Florida-based rock band Felicity . The band has always prided themselves on hard work and a diy punk rock ethos, so we talk about how the band started building momentum before the pandemic and how the audience for their music has grown exponentially in past years thanks in large part to the bands personality and traction on social media. They invite us behind the scene as they detail the methods used in their co-writing process for the song Charlie Sheen , which they co-wrote with producer Jon Lundin of the band Point North. They band also describe working with producer Andrew Wade over the years. Andrew has worked with bands like A Day To Remember, Neck Deep, and Wage War. He’s had a pretty big impact on music in this genre, and you’ll hear the guys in Felicity speak fondly of the impact he's had - not just on their song Charlie Sheen - but on their band as a whole. 10:45: Learning from those you hire and trusting their judgement 30:30: Building momentum just before COVID 33:00: Working with Andrew Wade CLICK HERE to submit your album via Groover to be featured on an upcoming episode of The Record Process this season! This week we sit down with songwriter, guitarist, and frontman Anthony Raneri of the Long Island-based rock band Bayside . We invited Anthony to walk us through the unique writing and release process of the band's most recent album titled There Are Worse Things Than Being Alive . You’re heard him explain how Bayside’s sound has progressed throughout the band's career spanning almost 2 and a half decades, and how this album challenged them to expand their understanding of what Bayside Is? Bayside has become known for their almost ‘cult-like’ fanbase, and we dive into how a band like Bayside works to balance outside expectations with their own internal drive to explore new avenues - not just in the music itself - but in the way they approach presenting it to the world as well. We touch upon how the band felt somewhat discouraged with their previous approaches to recording and releasing records, and how it led them on a quest to game what Anthony calls the “human algorithm” by releasing every song on the album separately. You’ll hear us discuss what it’s like for Bayside to truly live inside of a record, how Anthony tries to stay in that creative headspace throughout the process, and ultimately why he also believes in the self discipline required to take breaks in order to allow life back into the creative process. 9:45 - How Baysides sound has developed over the years 23:25 - Gaming the "human algorithm" 45:15 - Self discipline and putting "life" back into the creative process 51:05 - Mastery of songwriting is being able to get out of your head CLICK HERE to submit your album via Groover to be featured on an upcoming episode of The Record Process this season! This week we feature our conversation with canadian songwriter and vocalist Tyler Zanon , who’s project is better known by the name Youth Fountain . We discuss Tyler’s journey as a musician, and how Youth Fountain has transformed over the years. Tyler takes us through how his writing process has evolved over the years, and how his 2023 album Together In Lonesome forced him to grow even more with the help of producer Anton Delost. He recalls what it was like to finally have an outside perspective willing to help him break apart the songs and put them back together in a more compelling way. Tyler shines a light on the two specific songs from the album that really took him out of his comfort zone, and he also details the two songs on the album that underwent the most drastic changes throughout the process. You’ll hear Tyler zero in on his lyrical approach to capturing everything he wants to say in just the right way, and how trusting in his collaborators - mixed with the pressure of a finite timeline - ultimately afforded him the ability to create his favourite album yet. 11:40 - Working with producer Anton DeLost 25:10 - Becoming more comfortable with reworking ideas 33:45- Avoiding songs sounding the same CLICK HERE to submit your album via Groover to be featured on an upcoming episode of The Record Process this season! On this episode of the record process, we welcome Bradley Vander Lugt to the show. Bradley is a composer, drummer, and founding member of the michigan-based band La Dispute . Bradley was gracious enough to walk us through the making of La Disputes critically acclaimed 3rd studio album Rooms of the House , which was released on March 18th, 2014. He details the way in which the band approached the writing for this record differently - had how many of those details would later be documented in a companion book called Yesterday's Home, which was released alongside the record. He shares some of his biggest takeaways from the band's early days of playing shows, and how they ultimately choose to seclude themselves in a remote rental property in Michigan's upper peninsula when it came time to dig into the writing process for this album. You’ll hear how the band recorded ambient sounds for the album, even capturing samples of remote radio station broadcasts, all as part of their effort to zero in on the sonic palette for the project. You learn about the band's experience working with producer Will Yip for the first time on this album, and how they decided to approach tracking the unique vocal delivery of the band's singer Jordan Dreyer. Rooms of the House was named one of Rock Sound Magazines Top 50 Albums in 2014, and the process of its creation is still a testament to the artistry of the band over a decade later. 15:55 - 16:35 Biggest takeaway from early days of playing shows: 13:55 - 14:35 19:10 - 21:05 Gearing up to write LP3 26:10 - 27:25 Recording ambient sounds for the record 57:40 - 59:30 Tracking and Jordan’s vocal CLICK HERE to submit your album via Groover to be featured on an upcoming episode of The Record Process this season! This week on the penultimate episode of season 6, we thought it might be appropriate to feature our conversation with a guy who knows a thing or two about finishing records. Today we have our interview with world-class grammy award winning mastering engineer Chris Gehringer . Chris has worked with countless A-list artists and major label superstars throughout his career, but he joined us on the record process to shine some light on his creative philosophy by describing the specific work he’s done recently with Lil Nas X, Rosalie, and 21 Pilots. He talks about creating cohesion in an album, and how mindsets can often differ between producers and mastering engineers. Chris weighs in the loudness wars, the discussions he’s had with clients about the reference material they send him, and why he believes that the best engineers and artists are always the ones who are open to the opinions of other collaborators. Chris has amassed a wealth of knowledge and insights about making timeless records sound good, and he shares a ton of them with us right now. 10:55 - Working with Lil Nas X 14:35 - The shift in the mastering business across his career 47:55 - Getting notes from an artist vs a band 55:30 - Working on 21 pilots over Zoom If you enjoyed this episode, please consider joining our supportors club with a small donation HERE Have a question?
