Jaap tells stories of animals across nature, from bumblebees to chimpanzees, how they use plants and natural substances to treat infections, to ward off parasites, to self-medicate. Ariella Vaccarino and Theresa Ofstad interview Remy Meraz founder of Me Tyme and Zella Life. Remy learned that she is a visionary and has created several ideas for million-dollar companies. Listen to her story of how she had to pivot and created Zella Life. Ep. 28 – Remy Meraz - Zella Life 1:00 – Your energy together is off the chain. It’s so infectious. 1:50 – Remy and Theresa met in 2017, she was a year into her first start up, Me Tyme and in an entrepreneurial program for female founders through the Valley Economic Alliance. 2:50 – It’s like the Legend of the Phoenix, it had to burn down. My whole life burnt down as I knew it and was in a deep place of healing. Building a company while rebuilding her life. 3:45 – I was the crazy lady that got laid off from my job because I discovered my purpose with the idea of Me Tyme. I had big ideas that were multibillion dollar ideas for other people. I said, “If I ever came up with another big idea I promised myself I would not quite.” 5:30 – Fast forward to 2021, after working on Me Tyme for 5 years. I was applying for funding, and they required us to talk about our competitors. One of the competitors were at 98 million raised and valued at $1.1 billion. It was very defeating and empowering that her ideas are on point as a visionary. 6:30 – Realized she had to build a new idea with a new team. Bringing on team members that operate at the same speed, have the same work ethic, and have the same drive, tenacity, and commitment as you. 7:15 – You have to get very clear on your strengths and weaknesses. You have to own it and fill the gaps with the people that fill your weaknesses. 8:45 – Her investors said they believe in her as a founder, but they were not excited about the business model anymore. They offered to back her again if she created a new idea, but she had to get rid of the team she had, and also had to make sure the new idea made money right away. 10:15 – She was driving down the freeway thinking, “what does this mean? Do I give up?” Then looked to her left and saw a billboard that said, “Never ever give up!” 11:00 - The divine journey that Remy and Theresa are both on. 13:00 – Zella Life is the new endeavor that focuses on coaching to create unity between leadership and diverse talent. 16:20 – Mindset and emotional intelligence coaching to focus on moving forward. 17:50 – FAIL means: First Attempt In Learning. 21:00 – How she learned about the Google funding. 23:24 – Remy shared a social media post that Me Tyme Failed, then she birthed Zella Life, talked about the five things people could do to help; share with others, coaching, PR, etc. 26:44 – A friend saw her post and said he just finished Googles Black founders fund, they are launching a Google Latino’s founders fund, but you have to be nominated in and I want to nominate you. 30:00 – Google offered a year long program that provides resources for their founders; networking, programs, webinars, therapy sessions, etc. Got selected for Google growth academy. 32:00 – Remy talks about her business with everyone, it’s your Why, it’s what you love, she is doing it because she wants to help millions of lives, she is living a very purpose driven life so she is going to tell everyone about it. 45:00 – How you show up in one way is how you show up in all ways. 52:00 – You have been using your single mom excuse in a lot of different ways, who would I be without that excuse. When I realized I used that excuse a lot. When I asked myself about it, that is when the universe opened up. 53:00 – People think when their kids turn 18 you are done, empty nesting. You are not done, they need you in a different way. After being away from each other for three weeks, Ariella Vaccarino and Theresa Ofstad share gives with each other and talk about how inspiring it was to see Tabitha Brown at a Basketball game. If you don’t know who Tabitha Brown is, listen to this episode, she will inspire you to follow your dreams. Ep. 27 - Gift Giving – Tabitha Brown :30 – Ariella and Theresa send greetings and love to their husbands who support them creating this podcast. 1:00 – We have been apart for a few weeks while Theresa trained for her new job. We batch recorded a bunch of episodes and interviews to get us through several months of weekly releases. 2:00 - We are figuring things out and continuing to build MOMentum While apart we each got gifts for each other 3:00 - Ariella gifted Theresa with a journal so she can write one good thing that happened today. “The best way to protect the future is to create it.” By Abraham Lincoln 5:08 - “Never give up!” Card for support and a reminder that we are in this together for the long run building MOMentum for everyone, us, moms, and anyone who needs the motivation. The sister of Anthony Evans, who Theresa follows his songs that she heard when she got the idea to create Fuller Life Story. 21:00 – After reading her book, Theresa found so many connections between the three of us, Tabitha, Ariella, and Theresa. 22:00 – Tabitha Brown inspires Ariella and reminds her that you don’t have to be in a box. They managed to collaborate with Burke Williams Spa by recording this episode on location in one of their private rooms. They had services done at the spa then went to lunch and shopping. She taught me to be myself and encouraged me to get dirty and have fun. 9:30 – Theresa wears a necklace with a picture of her and her mom in a locket. She wears a bracelet with a tree of life because her mom wanted to be planted as a tree. The little necklace charm is for her son and shares what it’s like to be a mom. 10:45 - Ariella shares her story about becoming a mom, when her and her husband never thought about being parents. Then after having five children the gapping hole inside her got filled up. 11:50 – After Ariella’s mother died she went to therapy and her therapist said, “I don’t think you are depressed, I think you are bored.” This was before she was married and had five kids and five dogs as if they were waiting for her. She didn’t realize how much she needed to help keep her level. 12:55 – Theresa always knew she wanted to be mom, when she was in a major accident when she broke her pelvis bone the first thing her mom asked the doctors was, “Can she still have children.” Because her mom knew how important it was for her. 14:30 – When Theresa and her husband first met and got to know each other they found a lot of similarities, including having a family. They both wanted to have a big family, yet they were blessed with one. Until they formed HYPE Basketball with five team and now have 54 kids… 15:50 – It’s the love that you give. Ariella didn’t realize it but she was a voice teacher that would go to fancy homes with her little dog Chewbacca, and started her motherly thing. 17:00 – Being a mom is amazing. Because of medical reasons, Theresa and Chris considered adopting and asked their son if he would mind if they adopted vs having additional children of their own. He said, “I don’t care, I just want a brother or sister.” Then asked if he wanted a brother or sister. He said a sister because they are just so darn cute. 19:15 – Ariella lost her mom in her early 30’s before she got married and had children. When her and her now husband reconnected, her mom said she was looking forward to being a grandma and pushing the stroller down the beach. She never got to do that. Her parents were in the holocaust, she was born in a refugee camp in Germany. She had a really tough life but was filled with light, energy, and fun. Kinda like I am a little fun, and my kids got that too which is nice. 20:00 – Her mom didn’t get the same opportunities that Ariella gets. She didn’t get to pursue who she could have been. So many people are struggling to go after their dreams. 21:58 – Past generations didn’t have the same things or the same opportunities that we have now. From Ariella’s story, Theresa can hear and feel the talented magical mommies club coming out of her. Part of that is knowing that her mom didn’t get to experience the same things. Her podcast, Talented Magical Mommies Club is amazing. (Check it out in the link below.) 22:45 – Theresa’s parents got divorced when she was six years old, her mom raised her on her own. Even though she got to see her dad on weekends. Her mom worked in the same place and retired after 40 years, which is great, but now a days we have so many more creative opportunities. 23:30 – Theresa feels her mom guiding her along a divine journey with a series of things that Theresa has experience. 24:00 – Story of mom guiding her while shopping. And taking her son to the carousel ride in the mall. 26:47 – Ariella’s mother-in-law helped hold and take care of her five babies as she lived with them. She was a very different person than her mother but she was a huge part of her children’s upbringing. “All my love to her.” It’s a bummer when your parents don’t get to experience you as a mother. 27:30 – Theresa shares a story about her mother-in-law who is a very special woman, yet she doesn’t tell her that enough. She has always been open arms. 28:30 - Being a mother-in-law and daughter in law can be very difficult. When you understand that what you truly love brought you together, you find a way to connect and find a way to work through any struggles. It’s coming from a place of love. I do love my mother-in-law and we do get a long very well. 29:50 - There are great aunts out there that don’t have children of their own but act as a mother to their nieces and nephews. Just so many kinds of mother figure out there. 31:00 – Theresa’s husband has two aunts that have been like moms to him and his brother. The first-time meeting Auntie Carla Theresa was so nervous to meet her because she didn’t like any of her husband’s other girlfriends. She passed the Auntie Carla test on the first day. His other Aunt treats all of her nieces and nephews as her own. 32:35 – Ariella had two moms; one was her mother’s mother who had a rough life. She was a brilliant woman; she left her house to study medicine which was unheard of at that time. Then went through tough times in the war. The other mom was her mom’s sister who she really loved. She was the fun Aunt. She sees a certain energy, youthfulness, playfulness that she sees in herself and in her kids. 33:33 - Theresa has a fun Aunt too. There was a 20-year gap between her mom and aunt but only a 10-year gap between Theresa and her aunt, more like a sister. 34:12 – There are so many special women out there. Elizabeth Brunner is a San Francisco based designer and a mom of girl-boy twins. StereoType was born with the mission to celebrate kids’ individuality and freedom of expression by blending traditional ideas of boys’ and girls’ wear. Elizabeth also ran a successful clothing line called piece by piece using scraps from designers to eliminate the waste, which shut down in 2018 when she decided to stay home and focus more on her kids. Ep. 20 – Elizabeth Brunner, StereoType Kids 1:55 –Elizabeth Brunner is a San Francisco based designer. StereoType is a gender-free kids clothing brand that’s designed to empower kids to express themselves authentically. 3:02 – StereoType was inspired by her girl-boy twins when they started to dress from each other’s wardrobes as their preference. 4:30 - Studied fashion design at California College of the Arts 5:50 – Launched StereoType kids in November of 2020 during the pandemic after feeling the calling. 6:28 – Advocating for all kids’ individuality. 7:12 – Her kids were her DNA of the brand, Co-founders, and models. 7:49 – “Wow mom, you are making changes for the world.” They wanted to be part of a bigger mission. 9:00 – Became an accidental entrepreneur, her family did not own their own businesses. 10:00 – Home schools her kids along with a naturalist caretaker. They are learning what they want to learn and what they are called to learn. 11:25 – It was all about the creative process and commitment to follow through. What is the goal and how are we unique? 12:23 – Gender Neutral tends to be toned down. Gender-free is more about blending what is typically considered masculine and feminine. Defining it as blended fashion. 13:35 – Once I had the definitive brand, things started to fall in place. That’s when you know you are on the right track. 14:10 – I consider this business as raising a third baby. I need help raising my baby to help get those first building blocks going. It’s never ending, sharing your vision and your passion. 15:10 – It’s like another child, you have birthing pains, you have growing pains at different stages of growth of your business. As mom’s we know what that feels like. Like Ariella’s line of CD’s and books on singing, every time she completes a CD it’s like I gave birth to that and now it's there. It’s such a cool feeling. Nourishing our newborn baby/business. 16:10 – As an entrepreneur it is so hard, how do you know what to turn it off/on? She has a great answer here… 17:30 – Allowing our kids to express themselves naturally instead of telling them boys play with this and girls play with that, or boys wear this and girls wear that. 18:50 – It would be nice if there was not just a boys’ section and girls’ section, but just a kids’ section. 20:30 – This brand is about educating parents to consider what would be normal for their child to express themselves and not limit them or limit ourselves. They should not be labeled. 21:50 – Some people have a hard time with change. It’s a fear of going outside the norm. 23:20 – There is a point when our kids become aware of who they are and what they want. 25:15 – What are they going to do next? 27:14 – Still in start-up phase with direct to consumer using high quality, limited quantity products that support local manufacturers. 30:40 – What are your hopes and dreams for your business? Advocating for adults and kids to step outside of your box, get uncomfortable, do something you normally wouldn’t consider. You will learn something about yourself that you never thought you would. 31:50 – Advice to mompreneurs – Go for it!!! If you have a burning idea that your heart is calling you to do, then do it. Start small but get started. Once you align your heart with your vision, things will start to fall into place. It’s not always going to be easy, but your voice matters, and we need to hear what you have to say and share. Robin Barber has always been a giver. About 26 years ago, a dear friend of hers struggled to get pregnant. When she finally did, Barber and her husband knew they had to do something special. Each month of their friend’s pregnancy, Barber and her husband would send gifts anonymously to the friend, only to reveal themselves once the baby arrived. The idea was so well-received that Barber has continued to anonymously send her friends and friends’ daughters gifts throughout their pregnancies until she decided to make a business out of it in April 2020. Listen to her story. Ep 19 – Robin Barber-The Baby Fairy Shoppe 1:45 – The Baby Fairy Shoppe is 20 years in the making. Starting with a friend who had a hard time to get pregnant. 3:11 – Gift giving service, go to the website, pick what you choose, Robin mails them individually throughout the month. Ships gifts every two weeks with a card that says their Fairy if thinking of her. Reveal with the last gift, who it is from (if you wish.) 5:20 – Anticipating the birth of your child, there are so many emotions you go through. This is just a way to bring extra joy. 5:50 - When they open the gift they know someone is thinking of them and it puts a smile on their face. I love it, it is a dream 6:40 - April 2020, it became an official business. Robin started with a partner that bowed out. She has been on her own since January 2022. 7:20 - Robin works a full-time job as well. The goal is to leave the full-time job and focus all her time on The Baby Fairy Shoppe. 8:00 - Sometimes people need to have a full-time job, even if it’s just for the benefits. Keep doing it until your business takes off. 9:00 - Biggest challenge is marketing. Gail Lara is a Small Business Commissioner for the City of Los Angeles. She was also the founder of the Women’s Collaborative Mentoring Program and brought to the position more than twenty years of experience as a business owner and small-business development training. She holds twenty-five years of experience in retail buying, sales management, procurement, and advertising specialty. Commissioner Lara also worked as a business coach with Operation Hope and progressed their Launch + Grow for women entrepreneur’s program. Over her extensive career, she served more than 5,200 business owners to start or grow their company and connect to resources for funding and new business opportunities. Listen to her tips and advice while being a mom of three children, which includes raising a special needs child with high functioning Autism (Asperger’s) and was an instrumental leader in navigating the system to help improve school programs for youth with Special needs! Ep 18 - Gail Lara-Women's Collaborative Mentoring Program 2:50 - Right out of college, moved to Hawaii, stayed there for 25 years, had her three children, and moved back to the mainland 23 years ago, and was in retail. She decided to start her own business bringing goods from Hawaii. 3:50 - Started the Women’s Collaborative Mentoring Program 10 years ago. 5:15 - Word of mouth is the best way to do things. 6:00 - Planning and scheduling Pau, Hana Friday’s, to them means finish work then go to the beach, watch the sunset and have dinner together. Kids get used to family traditions. 8:04 - Assigned each child a budget for a meal for the family each week. She would take them to the store to buy the items within budget. And if not, they would put it back. 9:22 - With high functioning autism, her son was in LAUSD and on so many programs that mixed them with the other children, it was a challenge. 10:07 - Autism is a big business, “do this for him”, “take this medicine,” etc. You try to do it all and you don’t even know what is working. 10:55 - It’s not about fixing him but understanding him. I needed to sit down with his teachers and caregivers and ask what one thing are you doing that’s working? 13:46 - we tend to want to hover and do it for them and fix things. They need to know how to do it themselves. 15:30 - Gail is my friend that started the entrepreneurial training program 16:25 - Tips for people starting Business - Work with the free resources out there (see link below) funded by the city. Work with all of them. You never know who’s desk it will reach that needs your services. SBDC (for each city) Business Source Center (for each city) SBA – Small Business Administration (Federal program) Two most asked questions: Where do you find a mentor. What are the steps? Checklist to get started. 19:10 – Not once source has the budget to handle it all, be part of all of them. 20:30 – Contracting; Women contractors, Women owned business, Black owned business certifications. 22:15 - Gail connected you with the free resources and helped get your business started. 23:13 – Women’s Collaborative Mentoring Program was put under the VEA and Launch and grow was under OPERATION HOPE. They were both transitioning when she retired so they are no longer. But her resources still exist. 25:54 – My middle daughter has a wellness center in Mammoth and Bishop, Her oldest daughter is doing elixirs and works for a corporate company. Her son has his own business. 27:00 – You need to speak your business every day, to everyone at every opportunity, nonstop and ask yourself; did I speak to 10 people today? 28:00 – Ariella was at her son’s school event as she was starting a group class. She was telling everyone at school about it. 28:50 - On average, people need to hear about you 7 times to get the sale. 29:21 – Be known for something. 30:00 – Speak to anyone and everyone you come in contact with. 32:56 – What does your morning routine look like? It starts with gratitude and a morning walk. 34:35 – Look at your Business Plan and ask yourself; how is my business going to look in five years? How am I going to make money this year? Today, tomorrow, next week, next month… did I make my goal? 35:25 - I can’t tell you how many entrepreneurs want to give it away to a charity. Get your business going first. Get yourself established, then you can think about the charities. 36:15 - Banks will lend when you have money. Businesses will grow if you have money, so save everything you can. When you want to grow your business then borrow it. 40:25 – Speak to 10 people about your business challenge! Gail Lara - Gail has also received many Business Awards and recognition including NLBWA, LABJ, SFVBJ, and for the past five years was recognized by the San Fernando Valley Business Journal as one of the Valley 200 most Influential Leaders. Gail serves on the planning committees for the City of L.A., Women’s Entrepreneur Day, and Small Business Summit. Gail’s philanthropic side has always been one of service. She serves on such boards as the Special Needs Network, a program dedicated to helping children with Autism, and the North Valley Regional Chamber. Menina Fortunato, founder of MENINA ENTERTAINMENT, has been in the dance industry for 3 decades and maintains a hectic schedule working both in front and behind the camera, owning multiple dance businesses, traveling the world while juggling being a wife and mother of 3. Ep. 17-Menina Fortunato - This Mom Sure Can Pivot. 1:53 – In 2016 we moved back to Canada to raise our family. 3:40 – Before having children, I used to tour with Earth Wind & Fire, Rain, Luis Miguel, and others. I toured until I was four and a half months pregnant. 4:53 – I always knew a dance mom in the city that I was touring in to help with babysitting. 5:53 – Every summer I would travel to L.A. with my kids to run The Hollywood Summer Tour. 7:03 – Going to work was a vacation, I had all this me time. 8:08 – I love my work; I love what I do. I have never had a regular 9-5 job my entire life. I have evolved my entire career around dance and had to pivot a lot. 9:12 – During the pandemic, my events business which was my main bread and butter completely stopped overnight. Had to pivot again. 10:17 – I did my first online event over the summer and live streamed in L.A., Vegas, and London while I was in Vancouver. 12:05 – I was stuck at home, and I needed to get back in shape, so I turned that into something. 13:13 – I was undercharging and that was a whole thing. It’s hard to know what to charge people online. 14:15 – Mom’s will spend anything on their children but not when it comes to themselves. 16:00 – I started a whole library of videos that moms can watch on their time and added nutrition, chef, mindset. 16:50 – I hired a business coach that specializes in high ticket sales, it was a big investment. 18:40 – On Demand is pre-recorded lessons that they do on their time. Plus, I had weekly accountability coaching. I also added nutrition, mindset, 19:40 – Social Media Marketing is where I found most of my clients; MOM groups in Facebook are where a majority came from. 21:00 – To create each video I used my iPhone, ring light, lavalier mic plugged into computer separately, edited and overlayed video, sound, and music in final cut, using royalty free music. 24:21 – How do you know when to invest and how much to invest? If you want to make a lot of money, you need to invest in yourself and expand your mind. 26:52 – Arman Sheffey from high ticket coaching helped Menina pivot again. 32:30 – Instead of throwing spaghetti at the wall, find someone who has done it and short cut your success rate. 39:00 – I took the framework that I learned from my coach, pitched a 6-month mentorship program to dive deep with dancers and creating a career for them. 41:00 – How do you pick just one of your products to promote and be known for? 43:50 – Instead of focusing on high volume of sales, have less clients at a higher ticket and really nurture them. They get better results and refer a friend, everyone wins. 49:05 – I think I am on to something here. I started the Hollywood Sumer Tour in 2006 and I still love it, but I have created something better for my lifestyle as a mom. 52:00 - I felt like I was a jack of all trades and a master of none. Ariella Vaccarino and Theresa Ofstad share more accomplishments, from interviewing our first guest, spreading the word through social media, and creating Reels. Our next guest will be international, from Canada. Follow the journey of two busy passionate moms while they bring other mompreneurs on the show. Ep. 16–Interviewing our next guest from Canada. 0:45 – First interview has been recorded and about to record our second interview. 1:12 – Creating Reels on Social media to help spread the word. 2:00 – Story of how our first reel happened. Don’t put it off until next time. 3:59 – We had a mom comment on our post is that it inspired her. It gave us the MOMentum we needed to move forward. 4:25 – Reels are beyond your Facebook page but needs to be under 60 seconds. 5:12 – We recorded it in the wrong format and learned how to do it for next time. There are tools to change the format to the correct way. 6:00 – We used YouTube to figure it out. 6:25 – We have 70 women wanting to be interviewed on our podcast. 7:00 – The more you connect with other moms, you are able to capture their audience as well. 8:45 – Part of our walks and strategy sessions are organizing how we are going to select and get these women on our show.
