Eli Beer is a pioneer, social entrepreneur, President and Founder of United Hatzalah of Israel. In thirty years, the organization has grown to more than 6,500 volunteers who unite together to provide immediate, life-saving care to anyone in need - regardless of race or religion. This community EMS force network treats over 730,000 incidents per year, in Israel, as they wait for ambulances and medical attention. Send us a text “The works that I do in my Father's name testify to me.” - from John 10:25 Anyone who does anything of substance or significance is going to be subject to questions and criticism. Jesus had a lot of skeptics and critics. None of us particularly like to be questioned or criticized. We have a tendency to want to justify ourselves, to rationalize our choices, and at times to become overly defensive. Jesus shows us a different way handling such situations. While Jesus does offer concise explanations of his reasons and purposes, he doesn’t get bogged down wasting time and energy arguing with people who don’t want to be convinced. He instead chooses to focus his efforts and energy on his mission. He never lets the criticism or slander distract him from doing the work he was called to do. Send us a text Care for My Sheep “A second time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Tend my sheep." - John 21:16 Three times on this sequence, Jesus asks Peter if he loves him. Three times Peter answers that he does. Three times Jesus replies, then that being the case, you go and feed and care for my sheep. We express our love and devotion to God by the way we care and nurture for God’s people. Now there may be some who limit their understanding of God’s people to a particular faith or denomination. But this is incorrect. As the Psalmist writes, “The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” (Psalm 24) We are all God’s sheep. There are no exceptions or exclusions. Everyone reading, watching, or listening to this has someone they can help, someone they can be a blessing to, someone they can encourage and support. These someone’s are God’s sheep. Send us a text They Followed Him Anyway “After this he said to him, "Follow me."- from John 21:19 It would have been easy for the disciples to follow Jesus if they had believed following him was going to lead them to health, and wealth, and material prosperity. However, in this case, Jesus had just finished describing to Peter how he would one day be arrested and executed. In fact nearly all of Jesus’s inner circle and the Apostle Paul were executed. They knew it was virtually inevitable that they would be if they followed him. They followed him anyway. Following him led them to their experiencing the Holy Spirt raising them up over the forces of fear, and hate, over injustice and oppression. Following him allowed them to experience the Kingdom of God among them. Following him led them to a peace that surpassed all understanding. Send us a text Bring What You Have “Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish that you have just caught." - John 21:10 These disciples had spent the entire night fishing. After their initial night of failure and frustration, Jesus had them adjust their approach and try again. This led to their bringing in a massive haul. When they got back to shore, they found that Jesus had already built a fire, and prepared a meal of bread and fish for them. Jesus invited them come and eat. Jesus also invited them to bring what they have. The lessons is that we’ve been called to stay together and work together. We’re not always going to have the success. Sometimes we will have to adjust our approach and try again. The important thing to remember is that we have all been invited to a feast that God has already prepared. Send us a text God Has Prepared a Meal for Us “When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it, and bread.” - John 21:9 These disciples had been through a lot to say the least. Jesus did not bring about the kind of change that had hoped for or expected. Yet they knew something even bigger was happening. Jesus was raised from the dead and had appeared. They didn’t know what it meant for them. But they knew it would be something big. They stayed together while they were waiting. They continued fish as they normally did. After a long night of failure, they followed the advice of a stranger who was actually Jesus, and came back with a massive haul of fish. When they got back to shore, they recognized Jesus. Jesus had already prepared a meal for them. God is with us in our success and failure, in our good times and our bad times. Send us a text The Truth Will Set Us Free “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” - from John 8:31-32 Some truths are difficult for us to acknowledge. Sometimes acknowledging the truth portrays us and the people we love in a bad light. Sometimes acknowledging the truth forces us to deal with our guilt and shame. Yet, if we are going to abide in the way of love Jesus taught and demonstrated, we have to come to terms with the ways in which we have failed to love. We have to be willing acknowledge the ways we have failed to honor God by failing to honor the reflection of God in ourselves and in each other. Most of us like to think of ourselves as good and decent people who always do the right things for the right reasons. As a result we will deny or rationalize any of our actions or behaviors that are inconsistent with our desired self image. We will stay stuck repeating the same mistakes and getting the same outcomes. Only the truth can set us free to walk a different path and get a different outcome. I’m Horace McMillon. If the Jesus that they had seen arrested, tried, convicted, tortured, and executed was somehow right in front of them, walking and talking with them, their lives could not go on as before. Send us a text When We Come Up Empty “They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.” - from John 21:3 Peter and some of the other disciples had spent the entire night fishing. But despite their best efforts and hard work, they came up empty. They hadn’t caught anything. It sometimes happens to all of us. We do the right things. We work hard. And still we fail to reach our goals or even make much progress toward them. How exhausting! How frustrating! Despite being tired. Despite being frustrated. The disciples didn’t give up. They were open to suggestions and willing to try some new techniques- in this case fishing from the right side of the boat. Are we willing to listen? Are we willingly to adjust our approach and try new techniques? Are we willing to work through our failures, fatigue, and frustrations? Send us a text Accountable to Grow “He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?" - Acts 9:4 How did, Saul, one of the biggest persecutors of the early Christian movement, which was then know as “The Way”, go on to be remembered as Paul a saint who had more books of the New Testament attributed to him than to any other writer? He was open to criticism, willing to be led, willing to learn and accountable to change. Instead of responding defensively to the question, and trying to justify his actions, he sought to understand. “He asked, "Who are you, Lord?" Saul had spent his entire life working hard to do the right things and to make the world a better place. How difficult it must have been for him to acknowledge that not only was he wrong, he had been completely blind to the truth. If we want to grow, we have to stop being defensive, stop always trying to justify ourselves. We have listen, ask questions, and listen again to understand not just respond. Send us a text God Isn’t Angry with Us “For his anger is but for a moment; his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes with the morning.” - Psalm 30:5 God isn’t angry with us. Some times it feels that way when we are hurting, when we are afraid, when we feel like we are stuck. It may feel like we’ve been forsaken, but the Psalmist says that even if we make our beds in hell, God is with us. God isn’t angry with us. We are angry. We are bitter. We are hurting. We often confuse our healthy desire for justice and deliverance with our unhealthy desire for revenge and retribution. It’s true this world and many of us in it are going through a nighttime of hardship and suffering. But these won’t last forever. Joy is coming. Peace is coming. Healing and health are coming. Redemption is coming. They will be here in the morning. We like the prodigal may find ourselves in our own pig pens of despair. God doesn’t make us love anyone. God doesn’t make us care. God doesn’t make us share who we are or what we have with anyone. God doesn’t make us turn around when we are going the wrong way. God doesn’t make us forgive. No matter what, God is with us. God loves us. One by one, God whispers our names. God sends the breath of life to us, but we don’t have to take it in. God gives. God offers us the opportunity to grow our capacity to love and serve, to heal and forgive. God leaves it entirely up to us. How long do we want to hold onto our pain and anger, our bitterness and resentment? We can keep them as long as we want. It means to believe that ours lives have meaning and purpose. It means believing that we have been sent to be a blessing, to contribute our gifts. We all have different gifts. Using our gifts looks like an endless variety of possibilities. It’s cleaning and organizing for some. Planning and administrating for others. Nurturing and encouraging for some, and teaching and preaching for others. Some may cook. Some may paint. Sone may plant. Some may sing and dance. Some may build, maintain and repair. Some may not have specific gifts they have discerned. Nevertheless, living in faith means believing that we have been sent into the world to be the bearers of kindness and compassion, hope and justice, love, mercy, and grace.
