For many travelers, Antarctica is a bucket-list destination, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to touch all seven continents. In 2023, a record-breaking 100,000 tourists made the trip. But the journey begs a fundamental question: What do we risk by traveling to a place that is supposed to be uninhabited by humans? And as the climate warms, should we really be going to Antarctica in the first place? SHOW NOTES: Kara Weller: The Impossible Dilemma of a Polar Guide Marilyn Raphael: A twenty-first century structural change in Antarctica’s sea ice system Karl Watson: First Time in Antarctica Jeb Brooks : 7 Days in Antarctica (Journey to the South Pole) Metallica - Freeze 'Em All: Live in Antarctica Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices…

Hosts Rob Fullmer and Andrew Bauman dive into the current state of the Arizona beer world. They start with personal updates on travel, touching on the high costs of add-ons like carry-on bags and Airbnb cleaning fees . The conversation shifts to industry regulations, discussing a situation in Kansas where long-unenforced minimum production requirements might force breweries to close . This contrasts with a major legislative win in Arizona: the passage of Bill 2905, which significantly lowers the minimum production requirement for breweries from 5,000 gallons to 1,000 gallons . This change is seen as crucial for smaller and newer breweries, potentially enabling more diverse business models like those of the newly opened Fort Mojave Brewing and Retrograde Brew and Barbecue . However, it wasn't all good news from the legislature. The hosts express significant frustration over the failure of the Hemp Adult Beverage Bill (1556) . Compounded by a recent edict from the Arizona Attorney General demanding the removal of hemp-derived THC beverages from shelves by late April under threat of severe penalties , they discuss the potential negative impact on businesses, the challenges for license holders dealing with patrons consuming unregulated products, and the missed opportunities for regulation and revenue . The episode also covers recent brewery news, including the sad closures of Beer Research Institute (BRI) and Taproom 120 . They reflect on the general challenges facing breweries, such as rising rents, slim margins, and intense shelf competition . Looking ahead, Rob and Andrew preview the upcoming Baja Beer Festival in Tucson, highlighting the wide array of breweries attending, interactive elements, and associated events like the Meet the Brewers night at Dragoon Brewing. They also briefly touch on the upcoming Craft Brewers Conference in Indianapolis . BAJABEERFEST.COM APRIL 5th, TUCSON Want to ask a question on the show? With Andrew out sick and with some important bills hitting the house, we tried an experiment. Could this blog be put together in one marathon House session? We used the assistance of AI Rob to do some of the voice-over work and while it worked out OK and might have been the right tool for the job... Well, we'd like to hear your thoughts. Also, there might be some literal blind spots on the audio so maybe check us out on YouTube. Rob Fullmer, the director of government affairs for the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild, and Andrew Bauman, the executive director, discuss recent news and events in the Arizona craft brewing industry. They begin by discussing the recent end to a 158-day drought in Phoenix, noting the importance of rain and snow for the state's agriculture and breweries. The conversation then turns to the Arizona legislature, which has recently begun its session. Rob mentions a bill that would allow golfers to bring their own beer to golf courses, which he finds interesting because it is outside of the areas that the legislators normally focus on. They then discuss the upcoming Arizona Strong Beer Fest, which will feature over 70 breweries from Arizona. They talk about the challenges of coordinating a program across so many breweries and the changes in social media algorithms that have made it more difficult to reach people. Andrew mentions that he recently attended a board meeting where the main topic of conversation was promoting the Arizona Strong Beer Fest. He says that there were some good ideas discussed and that he hopes to see more social media posts about the event. Rob talks about his recent visit to the Capitol, where he had to sit in on a committee meeting about amending the advertisement of THC products. He says that the unintended consequences of the bill could be overly broad and that he is concerned about how it could affect the alcohol industry. They end the podcast by talking about Bob Uecker. Join Rob and Andrew as they discuss their recent beer-related adventures. Rob shares his experience at Sierra Nevada's Celly Drippings event, where he also discusses the rituals around the preparation of Thanksgiving turkey and Christmas pudding, while Andrew recounts his trip to Willcox and Bisbee, Arizona. They also touch on upcoming events, including Pint Day and the Arizona Strong Beer Festival. For Rob, the act of meticulously preparing a Thanksgiving turkey, including brining it in beer, represents a cultural tradition passed down through generations. Similarly, the intricate process of making Christmas pudding, with its specific ingredients and the tradition of "stirring Sunday," holds a special significance. These rituals not only preserve culinary traditions but also foster a sense of belonging and continuity within the community. The limited availability and unique flavor profile of the beer create a sense of anticipation and excitement among beer enthusiasts. The Celly Drippings event, where attendees can sample a special variant of Celebration made from the drained "drippings" of the dry-hopping process, adds another layer to this ritual. Highlights: Rob recounts his trip to Sierra Nevada's Celly Drippings event, discussing the unique Celebration IPA variant and the brewery's hospitality. They also discuss the challenges of organizing such events and the need for community involvement. Great American Beer Festival (GABF): The hosts share their thoughts on the recent GABF in Denver, praising the increased excitement and attendance, but also raising concerns about educating new beer drinkers and the festival's focus on acquired tastes. This week's podcast episode is a conversation between Andrew Bauman and Hector Martinez, the owner of a beer and wine bar called Hoppy Vine in Oro Valley, Arizona. They discuss the current state of the craft beer industry in Tucson, the challenges breweries face, and the importance of creating a unique experience for customers. Key takeaways: The craft beer scene in Tucson is diverse but faces challenges. While there's a great variety of beers available, some breweries have closed recently. This reflects a nationwide trend of slowing beer consumption, particularly among younger demographics. Successful beer-centric focus on atmosphere, consistency, and variety. Hector emphasizes the importance of creating a welcoming environment, offering a consistently good product, and providing a diverse selection of beverages to cater to different tastes. He also highlights the need to adapt to changing consumer preferences, such as offering non-alcoholic options and ciders. Events are crucial for attracting and retaining customers. Trivia nights, live music, wine tastings, and karaoke are all examples of events that Hoppy Vine uses to draw people in. They discuss how these types of events can help breweries build a loyal customer base and differentiate themselves from the competition. The "if you brew it, they will come" mentality no longer works. With the increasing number of breweries and retailers, it's essential to actively engage customers and offer them more than just a good product. Beer tastings could be a valuable tool for breweries. Similar to wine tastings, beer tastings could provide an opportunity to educate consumers and create a more engaging experience. The conversation also touches on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the industry, the challenges of running a business during an election year, and the importance of partnerships with local businesses. Overall, the podcast provides valuable insights into the craft beer industry and the strategies that breweries and retailers can use to succeed. Want to ask a question on the show? This week, Andrew was a guest on Arizona Good Business. It's our third podcollaboration (We did 2 with the Hoppy Craftsmen, S1E8 and S1E9.) Born at St Joseph’s Hospital in 1985, a third generation Arizonan, Cale Aylsworth’s claim is “Arizona is a place like no other”. He entered the restaurant industry to pay for college, started out as a food runner, to head expo, to server, to bartender all before age 20. Cale found his path intersecting with a brand new local brewery in 2011 by simply enjoying a locally crafted beer at the bar. Or, the news in the 3rd week of July and how it affects our Arizona brewing scene. This week we draw our show title from Alex Cox's 1984 cult classic film, "Repo Man." This magical realist depiction of the LA punk scene, with its neutron bombs, dead aliens, and the iconic "Repo Code," serves as our inspiration. You can hear Miller's theory on the interconnectedness of ideas in the link below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJE2gPQ_Yp8 This week we discuss the announced retirement of Bob Pease from the Brewers Association and the seeming permanent shut down of Good Beer Hunting. Just a quick update on the new Arizona Craft Brewers Guild Board, Wanderlust, That Brewery, and the Secret Word... The Fourth of July. Hopefully, we did not Overlook something. When the Guild Team was in DC for Brewers Association Hill Climb, Rob and Andrew split an AirBnB. (No goods or services were exchanged for that plug!) In addition to our all day meetings, we pretty much lived together for several days. What do brewery trade association professionals talk about after a night out on the town? Beer? Work? Beer Work? Kind of... Not so much a deep dive but rather a dive into dives. Maybe even argued. At the heart of it (and it went unspoken) we are all looking for the reasons why dives or neighborhood places are becoming more popular again. Maybe there are lessons for our breweries back home. Some AI trickeration was used to cancel out Marvin Gaye's, "What's Going On" playing in the background. Hopefully it's not noticeable. Want to ask a question on the show? Sometimes this job takes you from festival to flight. Rob and Andrew discuss Real Wild and Woody and then pack it in and pack it out to Washington DC for the Brewers Association Hill Climb. Our guild took 7 meetings with our Arizona delegation. We discuss this year's talking points and in-person meetings with Rep Stanton and Rep Lesko. We also concluded the 160 days of the 75th 2nd Regular Session of the Arizona Legislature and discussed this year's gains across a stalemated legislative agenda. Woof! In this split episode, Rob first conversed with Four Peaks co-founder, Andy Ingram. Andy shared how the brewery started in 1994-95, the challenges they faced during tough economic times, and how they managed to thrive. Andy talked about the negotiations for the "Kilt Lifter" trademark, the mixed reactions from the community, and the importance of maintaining relationships with other brewers. Rob then asked Andy to discuss his experience at a 30-year-old brewery and compare and contrast the issues faced by today's newer breweries including distribution, packaging lease negotiations, and the importance of the public space--the brewpub. In the second half of the show, Rob spoke with Jeff Fowler of Lumberyard Brewing Co and Jim Roper from Four Peaks Brewing Co. Jim elaborated on the brewing relationship with Andy and Melissa Osborn. Jeff introduced his team. The brewers went on to explain their collaboration process and the challenges of brewing with different ingredients and equipment. They discuss the upcoming release of their collaborative beer, an Extra Pale Ale (XPA), and how they choose beers to brew based on consumer preferences and seasonal trends. They also touch on the importance of continuous improvement in brewing and the beers they are most proud of. Finally, they discuss the challenges of balancing work and personal life in the brewing industry. Last Call! Here on the podcast, we're leveraging AI to write the transcript and the captioning of the show with often terrible results. But there is no denying that we'd be able to produce a pod and videocast without it. We try and correct some of the known issues... it thinks Phoenix is spelled Phenix and Wren House is Red House or Rent House. It seems to also think that we talked about an Obama converter to move podcast subscriptions. We left that Easter Egg in. We used openchat to summarize the transcript and it thought we discussed, "Bunch of Stuff That's Pretty Relevant", so we'll take it. Here's the AI summary: In this session, we covered a wide range of topics related to podcasts, technology, industry events, legislative issues, and organizational initiatives for the Brewers Guild: Consumer Events: We discussed the Baja Beer Festival Brewer lineup and the proposed menu for an upcoming dinner to celebrate Phoenix's sister city Prague. So, there's this dish called "Smažený Sýr," which is basically just fried cheese. You know, they take these cheese slices, coat them in breadcrumbs, and fry them until they're all golden and crispy. It's like the ultimate comfort food, right? Then there's this sausage called "Špekáček," which they probably use in the Amadeus Burger. Can you imagine a juicy burger with a Czech-style sausage in it? Sounds pretty tasty to me! For the main course, they've got "Pečená Kachna," which is duck confit. They slow-cook the duck in its own fat until it's super tender and flavorful. They serve it up with roasted celery root, dill sauce, and bread dumplings. It's like a fancy Czech feast! And last but not least, they've got "Koblihy," which are basically Czech-style donuts. These bad boys are filled with plum jam and sprinkled with sugar. And you gotta have them with a dollop of whipped cream on top, right? It's like a sweet ending to a delicious meal! Podcasts and Technology: The team discussed changes in podcast platforms, such as Google Podcasts, and the need to find alternatives. Mentioned using an "Obama converter" for managing podcast subscriptions and introducing a new app called "Snipd" with AI functions. Industry Events and Initiatives: We attended a restaurant roundtable event discussing website changes and AI applications. Revitalizing the allied member program. Legislative Issues: The challenges in passing a bill related to THC regulation and the impact of dispensaries and regulatory agencies. Community Engagement and Networking: Consideration of organizing conferences or webinars for industry professionals and allied members. Emphasis on face-to-face interactions and social components in organizational activities. Overall, the session highlighted a commitment to improving the organization, engaging with members, and addressing various industry challenges and opportunities. Maybe just listen and don't read! EARLY RELEASE. This is where we are at. The cross roads on the eve of the eve of Arizona Beer Week. One of our biggest events of the year that funds the entire enterprise for the Brewers Guild--Arizona Strong Beer Festival. Our hearts are there. But this is also the time that we have to represent the industry at the state legislature. We normally don't share as much as we have about legislative strategy in real time. We don't often pull the curtains back as much as we have with our events, but we're laying it all out on the line because it's important. we do this for us, but we also do this ALL of us. Our souls are in Arizona. For Arizona. Yes and it will be partly cloudy and 75 degrees. We'll probably interrogate you in line if you look like a golf fan. No services or monetary considerations were made in exchange for this interview (as with all of our episodes). What happens in small hot rooms with lawyers? Rob shares some of the idiosyncrasies of the job and the power dynamics at the Capitol. Andrew gets some unexpected items in the mail. We talk about the latest in beer news. Who won't be coming to the aid of home distillers? Who will win the Superbowl? What does Randall Pink Floyd want? We rushed out this episode to announce that we are going to Help Employ More People as we support a very interesting bill at the Capitol. People often wonder why the laws between beer, wine, and spirits are so different and why they are designed to keep us from working together. We explore why through the lens of this lawmaking process. What if you had to create something from the start? Who might oppose you? Thursday Has Consequences--StayTuned! Oh and Andrew made a delicious beer in the Bahamas but failed to document it with photos... so did it really happen? We're all familiar with beer sales staff who work on behalf of either a brewery or a distributor, but a new kind of sales position is emerging in Arizona and other parts of the country — a shared salesperson that represents a handful of brands and coordinates with one or more distributors. These "people in our beer neighborhood" are more deeply integrated than the beer brokers of old. We'll explore this new dynamic with Countermeasures Corp (CMC) Regional Business Manager Jennie Stavros and representatives Carmen Rice and Sam Gard. We'll also be sampling zero-proof spirits from Ritual NA Spirits. No services or monetary considerations were made in exchange for this interview (as with all of our episodes). The Arizona Women's Collaboration Brew Day has a long history of bringing networking, camaraderie, and charitable contributions by women and for women. This year's location was Dragoon Brewing Company in Tucson. The Arizona Beer Frontier team sat down with 2 of the 4 committee members, Sarah Ritchie and Michael Anne Arnce to find out what the experience means to them and their colleagues. The beer produced devotes proceeds to 3 state women's shelters but it means so much more than that. In the second half of the show, we bring in Luke Edward of Yakima Chief Hops to talk about the Pink Boots Blend of hops, hop selection, and the remarkable relationship between selection and sensory from farm to lot to field. And the usual camera failure happens and that Dragoon taproom is a cavern so there is an echo that we tried to mitigate. Finally, the AI captioning is, well, out of control. It cannot distinguish bine from vine and that was a nightmare to edit for captioning. The show transcript is pretty sus too. The captions are derived from the transcript but it's like they use a different algorithm for it. C'mon Premier Pro. Not premiere and not pro! Get ready for a wild ride through the twisted trails of the World Series Bet beer delivery saga! This beer odyssey began with a detour from Phoenix through Chicago, as if the brews were on a farewell tour. In fact, there were some farewells. It all started with a wake in Ash Fork for an old soul in the industry. A happenstance discussion with the proprietor of Fibber McGees, Matt Brennan led to a trip to Chicago. You see, Matt was once part of the brew team at the original Goose Island Clybourn Brewpub and Sunday was the final day of service before the location moves. Rob got to spend some time with Matt and the old crew. THC beverages hit the Chicago market and were found at Binny's. Off Color Brewing, the Nisei Lounge, and the Beer Temple were visited. Rob and an old homebrew friend visited Metropolitan Brewing for a final time before it closes on December 16th. Smoked beers and classic German Lagers were enjoyed at Double Clutch Brewing. Classic cars with clutches were gawked at. Candy Cane Malort. In Austin, Travis Bailey of the Texas Craft Brewers Guild took Rob on a BBQ pilgrimage to Luling, TX. Live Oak Brewing, Austin Beer Works, Lazuras Brewing, Hold Out Brewing – they drank so many smoked beers, we lost count. Back at the Arizona homestead, Andrew risked engine failure for a double anniversary celebration at Fire & Fury (2nd anniversary) and Desert Monks Brewing (5th anniversary). Because who needs a working engine when there's beer to be had? Was there more... of course. Bellweathers for mid-November 2023. Is our beer culture robust enough to go from a 99F fest to a (now) 40% chance of AM showers and 74 partly cloudy afternoon? One hopes we are heartier than Bass Pro Shop customers. Two breweries gain national acclaim from Craft Beer and Brewing Magazine. Where can you find them? Speculation abounds. A rebrew for at least one is imminent. How many Anniversaries can Andrew attend in one day? What happened to $800K of Twisted Tea? Rob has a theory How can you (maybe still) get a beer from a tiny beer bar in Bruges that has a cultish following and is it a hard G or soft one? Almost none of these questions are satisfactorily answered. Full refunds are available for the price you paid. What are your Black Friday plans? We'll tell you what they are. The Arizona Beer Frontier Team lost a World Series bet to the Texas Craft Brewers Guild. We'll discuss the bet terms and what we learned about the Diamondbacks and the Rangers, minor league teams, merchandise, and promotions. Andrew shared his experience camping on the Mogollon Rim and attending the N'acho Beer Fest in Cottonwood. Rob went to a mall. But more so, he went to Canal Convergence and sampled some of the beers made from polished reclaimed water. Had Japanese beers and eats at Hai Noon in South Scottsdale. Pierogis and Polish Beer at All Pierogis in Mesa. Rob also discussed GERD, a largely underdiagnosed health issue in our beer culture. Andrew also attended the Phantom Fox opening on Monday and provided his thoughts. (GO is on Friday, Nov 10.) Other news and events for the weekend if N0V 10th were discussed as well as some beer news. And yeah, THC too. Coming up with titles for these things is the worst. And we went right for the puns. We had to talk about our unrelenting fanbase showing up for a 99F festival and our heat mitigation strategies for live events moving forward. They are unrelenting because they never relent. The Arizona Craft Beer Awards Festival continues to be a gem on the west side and if we can catch a break on the weather next year, you're all going to say that the hot year was the best. (In the same way that thousands claim that they were there in the rainiest Strong Beer in 2011 and I was the best.) OK, Olds. The Frontier Team is back in the office with Rob returning from the EU. So many things happened in the last 10 days or so in Arizona beer news that we felt it was a good time to catch everyone up before we did a show on Belgium and France. The closures of Lonesome Valley and the announcement of the closure of Flying Basset are disappointing since each had a community that appreciated their businesses. Ad Astra closes shop but will shortly be open under a new name in Tempe. Helton's sale to OHSO will enable OHSO to compete as one of Arizona's largest breweries. We also put the sale in context given OHSO's announced relationship with Hensley as their new distribution partner. Do these moves and closures signal the contraction of our industry or is this part of maintaining an overall brewing eco-system? With the New Jersey State Senate and General Assembly unanimously passing S3038, it seemed like the odious measures put forth by an out-of-control liquor department last July. Learn what happens next as the Governor and agency seem to want to squelch breweries' free speech, fundraising, and ability to raise public awareness as they fight back. The Beer Frontierians explain how all of this relates to Arizona and how a simple drive home from a meeting can get complicated. C'mon Phil. Sign the Bill. Tune into Steal This Beer here: http://www.stealthisbeer.com/episodes with John Holl and Augie Carton. We asked the fun duo, wetigersukesongs if we could use their version of Minas de Cobres and they graciously agreed. The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is known for its more remote and tranquil beauty. We'll tell you about the best place to enjoy a beer. (Maybe even from your own porch.) We also discuss the new legislative session even as the current laws from the last session have not gone into effect. Rob has a crazy idea about Shock Top. More politicians are weighing in on the projected grocery merger. Oh, New Jersey. You need to eject your Governor. We asked the fun duo, wetigersukesongs if we could use their version of Minas de Cobres and they graciously agreed. The Beer Frontier team was on the scene at Beer Research Institute as they made their big announcement to distribute beer through Quail Distributing. We spoke with Matt Tretheway in great depth about the 9 years that he and his team have invested in getting to this points, often punctuating growth with no, no, no, and never. But never can also be sometimes or always. A key piece of the big move is brewer Nick Remane. We learn a little about Nick's genesis and his new Czech lager. Trout fishing, the Ottoman Empire, amusement park rides, COVID reflections, being your own frenemy, scratch food, punk rock heart of gold. It's all in this episode. Is there a Gravitron in BRI's future, Time will tell. We asked the fun duo, wetigersukesongs if we could use their version of Minas de Cobres and they graciously agreed. Anheuser-Busch sells 8 former acquired craft brands to cannabis company, Tilray. With our bud, Ken Wilson from Lumberyard Brewing Co, the podcasters bluntly weed through the deal. Does the deal make sensi? We asked the fun duo, wetigersukesongs if we could use their version of Minas de Cobres and they graciously agreed. We hope you like it as much as the original. wetigersukesongs can be found here! https://www.youtube.com/user/wetigersukesongs…
