Podcast Producer Alphecca Perpetua asked Resident Historian Amiel "Cortz" Cortes if the 1986 EDSA Revolution and the 2022 Philippine Elections results were both contrasting historical events, and found that the two weren't as different and weren't as ironic from 16th to 19th-century Las Islas Filipinas after all; with cities, municipalities, and towns still ruled and governed by the same Principalía (or ruling Mestizo Class) now simply known as the "Politician-Elect". He added, "I was using these families as examples that not much has changed in the Philippine society since the Spanish period. How our society is run is simply dictated by the choices of a very few wealthy elite families. The Principalía of the 1800s pretty much dictated how their local communities were governed. Fast forward to today, we are still slaves to the choices of a few wealthy families who may or may not come from the Principalía of old. This idea came from Alfred McCoy in his book, 'An Anarchy of Families: State and Family in the Philippines.' A must-read especially in these [trying] times."
