#7 - Supporting favelas in Brazil to thrive with Adam Newman
Manage episode 358132945 series 3443732
There are over 1,000 favelas in Rio De Janeiro; over the last 9 years, the number of favelas in Brazil has nearly doubled and more than 16 million people call these communities home across the country.
These densely populated informal urban settlements have been subjected to nearly 500 years of racial and socio-economic discrimination and with soaring inflation, a lack of basic resources, rampant crime, and a widening income disparity between the upper and lower classes, local residents are facing increasingly challenging circumstances.
In Episode 7 of the Social Impact Journal, Jack talks with Adam Newman, a social entrepreneur who left the United States in 2012 to leverage his experience in social business and entrepreneurship to support local communities in Brazil to thrive.
Adam shares a fascinating overview of the unique challenges that favela communities face, but also the incredible people, businesses, and culture.
We discuss two of his initiatives; Favela Experience: a b2b social enterprise connecting tourists with local communities through meaningful experiences, and Favela Inc, a nonprofit developing physical spaces, technology, and incubation programs that help entrepreneurs and non-profit leaders achieve long-term sustainability.
