We meet Arianwen, the Loon, with few and confusing memories of the time before God told here she was to be a Saint; Qellen, the Celtic Mystic, who broke with her sisters when they 'turned to easier heresies'; and Sister Sal, the Christian nun who is, in truth, a Demon hoping to find a way to God's forgiveness, despite her manipulative nature.
There's the village of Dincynog with its secretive Lady and a lustful Priest, a (sickly) rider on a sickly horse, and fear of spreading pestilence. Then, the cowardly herder admits enough to encourage the Heroes to descend into the brimstone stink of 'The Devil's Crevice', where there's heat and lots of shadows with ... something ... hiding in them ...
