Vicki Sokolik refuses to be an Ostrich. Her son brought to her attention the crisis of unhoused youth — youth unhoused, not living with a parent/guardian, and not in foster care — in America, and she has been fighting to support this vulnerable population every since. Most active in Tampa Bay, Florida, Vicki is the founder and CEO of the nonprofit Starting Right, Now, which removes barriers for unaccompanied homeless youth to cultivate long-term well-being and self-sufficiency. She is also the author of the new book, “If You See Them: Young, Unhoused, and Alone in America.” Vicki Sokolik joined host Jay Ruderman to discuss the many ways unhoused youth fall through the cracks in our society, how her organization helps them, and also how to build trust with people who could use your help. 10 years ago this November, Bristol Academy WFC beat Barcelona in the UEFA Women's Champions League. Bristol Academy - the Vixens - were established in 2005 and became founder members of the WSL in 2011. In the club's short history, we punched well above our weight: twice FA Cup finalists (2011 and 2013) and WSL runners-up in 2013. The Vixens also qualified for the UEFA Women's Champions League twice. In 2011 we got knocked out in the first round. In 2014 Bristol Academy reached the quarter-finals, losing to eventual winners Frankfurt, but beating Barcelona along the way. That's right, Bristol Academy beat Barcelona! This special commemorative edition of the Bristol City Vixencast celebrates the 2014 Champions League cup run. Across two episodes, released on the anniversaries of the 1st and 2nd legs, we reflect on the significance of Academy's achievements - always the underdog, always fighting together, against the odds, to win a match no one thought we could. In this episode we talk with Nikki Watts, who held it together to score that penalty which won us the tie. These conversations are much more than a trip down memory lane, they are a refusal to forget the foundations of top-level women's football in Bristol. They are a refusal to forget when Bristol Academy beat Barcelona in the Champions League. ** Many thanks to Tash Harding and Nikki Watts for sharing their memories with us. Thanks also to Ed Hadwin and BBC Radio Bristol for allowing us to use the commentary from the match, which captures the electric atmosphere, euphoria and noise. Props also to Annie Heatherson, for some amazing co-comms. Have we finally arrived in the WS Hell? After two absurd drubbings - 5-2 at Leicester and 3-7 at home, to Brighton & Hove Albion - it looks like the end of the top flight road for Bristol City Women. And it's only the start of March. Where do we go from here? Nat & D-M try to understand what happened in our last two league encounters. Not sure we get to the bottom of it! We also discuss the 'Future Indirect Fires Conference', which took place at Ashton Gate 5-6 March. COYR! Vixens ‘Til We Die! COYR! Follow on X @BCVixenCast and on Instagram @bcvixencast Stop the War. "Her name is Rachel Furness and she is wonderful. When she heads the ball It's so beautiful, magical" A very special episode of the Bristol City Vixencast - we are joined by Rachel Furness! OMG! D-M & Nat go the RHPC and speak with the living legend about: Furney beginnings Coaching Presence on the pitch Gum shields and biting Diversity and Inclusion Dogs being awesome Injury and recovery Furney Future Huge thanks of course to Furney for speaking to us! To Noah Dougherty for facilitating the interview, and to BBC Radio Bristol for the commentary excerpt of the goal against Arsenal. COYR! Vixens ‘Til We Die! COYR! Layzell starts, Brooke is back for the second 45 Rachel Daly is in a strop. Bristol City Women claim a hard-earned and hugely entertaining point away at Aston Villa - what's not to like? D-M & Nat discuss City Women's battling, earn-your-luck draw, which saw formation changes and stellar full 90+5 performances from the whole team, with notable mentions to Thestrup, Yanez and that Carrie Jones worldie. City lose at home (again!) This is getting frustrating... Despite the great atmosphere, despite 6,000 home supporters cheering our team on, City fell at the most cruel of hurdles against a match-smart West Ham, who lapped up the expansive Ashton Gate pitch, their win orchestrated by a majestic performance from the midfield dynamo, Katrina Gorry. Gutted. Two huge matches in January, two relegation six pointers, absolutely nil points to show for it. Where do we go from here? D-M and Nat explore our options as we stare down the barrel of another stern WSL test: Aston Villa, at the Poundland Bescot Stadium in Walsall, this coming Saturday. Oh, and happy birthday Shahan for Sunday! COYR! Vixens ‘Til We Die! COYR! Follow on X @BCVixenCast and on Instagram @bcvixencast…
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear! City Women lose on the road, that wasn't meant to happen! Foiled by a last minute Terland strike in an entertaining ding dong against a determined Brighton & Hove Albion side. Join us as we relive what was - nonetheless - a fun away day. D-M speaks with several City Women supporters (and one BHAWFC fan) about Saturday night transfer news dropping; Panini Stickers; everything that happened on a windy Sunday afternoon in Crawley, and the looming battle with West Ham. Thanks to everyone who contributed. COYR! Vixens ‘Til We Die! COYR! Follow on X @BCVixenCast and on Instagram @bcvixencast…

1:28:20Happy 2024 City Women fans! Ok, it might be a bit too late to be saying that, but it's our first episode of the year, so let us off! D-M and Nat return with a bumper episode in which we discuss the not as bad as it could have been 3-0 defeat to Chelsea before Xmas; our newest goalkeeping recruit Shae Yanez; loving Amy Rodgers and bumping into Brighton's Julia Margareta Zigiotti Olme and Emma Kullberg at Gatwick airport. We also feature a very special guest: Brighton Hove & Albion WFC supporter Duncan Price. Duncan is the founder of She Gulls, a group who are helping to develop the supporter experience down in B right on. We talked about pretty much everything Brighton and Bristol related, but highlights include: growing the audience for women's football and different approaches pursued by our clubs; the Albion season so far; the need for both our teams to have a good transfer window and of course - of course we did - Sophie Baggaley! D-M and Nat giddily skip through a 1-1 draw away at Liverpool, an excellent point that leaves us sitting pretty in 11th, one ahead of a hapless West Ham United. Amalie Thestrup's insouciant heeled goal - her fifth of the season - enabled City Women to take a share of the spoils in Birkenhead. This was a solid performance from the whole team, with Syme and Mustaki stepping in with great distinction, and Mari Ward showing promising menace off the bench. What does Lauren Smith have up her sleeve for when the transfer window opens? Only time will tell, but all we want for Xmas is Rachel Rowe. COYR! Vixens ‘Til We Die! COYR! Bristol City Women slip to a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United in front of a record-breaking crowd at Ashton Gate stadium. Just over 14,000 people flocked to BS3 to watch a solid performance with plenty of stand-out defensive moments. While at least half the crowd were there to see ex-Vixen and now football legend Mary Earps, it was the shot-stopping of City keeper Liv Clark that caught the eye. City will take much heart from a game which saw us struggle to effectively link defensive, midfield and attacking play. Make no mistake, this was a battling effort, and will add fuel to our fire when we face Liverpool after the international break. COYR! Vixens ‘Til We Die! COYR! Follow on X @BCVixenCast and on Instagram @bcvixencast…
Well, that was a bit disappointing, wasn't it? Not our podcast, silly! We're talking about Bristol City Women's 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa on a dreary Sunday at Ashton Gate. We struggle to pick out the positives from a lack lustre and low energy performance which sees us slip back to the bottom of the WSL. But we do try and make sense of what happened, and what needs to be different next time at Everton when we go again. COYR! Vixens ‘Til We Die! COYR! Follow on X @BCVixenCast and on Instagram @bcvixencast…
Toot toot! All aboard the away day train! D-M and Nat are joined by a bumper crew (Shahan, Dan, Magda, Dave and Mike) on a victorious journey to Dagenham East to watch City Women convincingly beat West Ham to claim our first W of the WSL season. Our hearty travellers were treated to an entertaining 3-2 victory with goals from Amalie Thestrup, Ella Powell and Brooke Aspin. We talk about the season so far and reflect on the talking points from a very satisfying win on the road, a game which saw the return of the one and only Abi Harrison. Bring on Arsenal (Thursday) and Villa (Sunday). Vixens ‘Til We Die! COYR! Follow on X @BCVixenCast and on Instagram @bcvixencast Coach tickets for our away fixture against Everton on Sunday 19 November are now on sale. Visit here for more information.…
Relive Sunday night's magical game under the fire-breathing lights at Ashton Gate! Savour the many marvels of Furney's head, goalkeeping brilliance from WSL debutant Liv Clark, and blocks to die for from Megan Connolly and Jamie-Lee Napier. Ok, so we didn't win. But it felt like we had won, in a way. Along with 12,008 people wanting a fun Sunday night out, Bristol City Women turned up and said: we are here, and we're ready to play. It was an evening to spark hope, belief, and purpose. Vixens ‘Til We Die! COYR! Follow on X @BCVixenCast and on Instagram @bcvixencast…
D-M & Nat go again at Spurs! We discuss City Women's 3-1 stumble in North East London, and continue to pick out the positives despite no W. Yet. We rue silly mistakes but praise creative intentions in a performance that offered greater degrees of coherence and composure. Now that the so-called 'easier' games are over, we look ahead to clashes with Man City and Arsenal in the weeks to come. Vixens ‘Til We Die! COYR! Not sure how much longer we'll be on X but follow us there if inclined @BCVixenCast and on Instagram @bcvixencast…
D-M & Nat offer a surprisingly upbeat appraisal of Bristol City Women's 4-2 season-opening loss to Leicester City Women. Why not? After all, we scored two goals today. In the WSL. That's two more than Arsenal did. We cover the inevitable screamer from Aimee Palmer, good feelings at the Gate, promising forward play from Carrie Jones, a brilliant shift from the ever-blossoming Layzell, regrettable concentration lapses and midfield imbalances. We look ahead to Tottenham, next Sunday, and say sorry to Martha Thomas while we're at it. Vixens ‘Til We Die! COYR!
