ASCENSION Ascension does not mean Jesus is gone. Indeed, the Communion antiphon today echoes the Gospel: "I, the Lord, am with you always, until the end of the world, alleluia." In the time between the ascension and the second coming, then, our task is to recognize Christ all around us, especially in the poor; honoring them is indeed a key part of our Gospel mission. Jesus commissioned followers to proclaim the Good News and to follow him, on our earthly journey and to our heavenly destination. He's far from gone! He is among us and in us. We are reflections of his presence in the world. Text, Bryan Cones © 2005 OCP. All rights reserved .

CALLED AND CHOSEN Being "called" offers the possibility to be "chosen." Choice is a two-sided freedom. Today we hear about Elisha's call: he prepares his work and family and then takes up the work of Elijah. We hear Jesus' stronger call Jesus demands a free, single-minded response. There is no turning back for those who follow him. It is a daunting call to salvation, to holiness, to sharing his life. He gives us courage to follow him in the Eucharist. Do we, do you, dare to answer that call, wherever it leads? Text, Philip J. Sandstrom, STD © 2000, OCP. All rights reserved.…

DISCIPLESHIP Disciples are called to give themselves completely over to Christ. Today the disciples move to another stage of learning as they journey to Jerusalem. The way of discipleship involves the same process for all believers-detachment, self-denial, taking up the cross. Yet the mystery remains. Why must Jesus suffer and die? Will you go away like Jesus to pray in solitude and answer the question posed by Jesus, "Who do you say that I am?" Text, Michael R. Prendergast, MTS, MA. © 2003, OCP. All rights reserved.…

DO NOT BE AFRAID John came to testify to the light and prepare an upright people for the Lord. The Church has celebrated feasts in honor of John the Baptist since the fourth century. In the early Church, John was held in high esteem along with the apostles and St. Stephen. John, filled with the Holy Spirit in the womb of his mother Elizabeth, brings the children of Israel to the Lord their God. "John baptized Christ, the giver of baptism, in the waters made holy by the one who was baptized" (Preface 61, Roman Missal). Like the angel in the Gospel, we can say "Do not be afraid," for John is born anew to herald the message of repentance and conversion that leads us toward our salvation. Text, Michael R. HOSPITALS FOR SINNERS Jesus is the promised one who has come to save, heal and raise up all in need of salvation. The sinful woman in today's Gospel bends low to bathe the feet of Jesus with her tears, wipe them with her hair, kiss them and anoint them. The woman who sits at Jesus' feet is a true disciple. In this story, Jesus contrasts the Pharisee's lack of love with the woman's lavish love. Today's Gospel is a story about the Eucharist. This story demands reconciliation and asks that those who come to the eucharistic table repent and welcome others. As Donald Trautman, Bishop of Erie, Pennsylvania, has often said, "Our houses of worship are meant to be hospitals for sinners, not museums for saints." Text, Michael R. Prendergast, MTS, MA © 2007, OCP. All rights reserved.…

HOLY WISDOM Today we celebrate the Trinity's work for our salvation. God the Father is the beginning. The work continues with the sending of the Son, Jesus, the Christ, who lives among us as the way, the truth, and the life. Then the Spirit of Truth comes to lead us to the complete truth. Out of love, God sanctifies us in his family. Holy wisdom delights in the Trinity's great work on our behalf. We nourish ourselves with word and sacrament as we follow Jesus' way to the Father. COVENANT Bread, wine, and fish are God's food for the end times-and are used many times in the Bible. Melchizedek, the priest-king of God's City, Jerusalem, offers bread and wine to Abraham, the spiritual father of us all. Jesus gives the superabundant Messianic food "bread and fish" to the 5,000 people. We receive a share of the new covenant in Jesus' body and blood, which is in the form of bread and wine. Come to the heavenly banquet to receive God's life! Text, Philip J. Sandstrom, STD © 2000, OCP. All rights reserved. .…

SPIRIT SENT Today we celebrate God sending the Advocate to his bride, the church, to teach and remind us of all things necessary. That Paraclete allows us to cry out, "Abba, Father!" That comforting Spirit bears witness that we orphans are God's children and so heirs of God. We are coheirs with Christ Jesus, sharing his cross in order to share also his glory. We proclaim the Messiah work of Jesus -if we are true to the Spirit given-to bend the stubborn heart and will, to guide the steps that go astray. Maranatha! Text, Philip J. ASCENSION OF THE LORD "Why look you up to the sky?" Be confident and patient. Jesus has gone to be more closely with us. The Spirit comes with power to baptize us, to possess us, to strengthen us. We bear witness to repentance for the forgiveness of sins to the ends of the earth. With God's strength we can do all things. Why be frightened? Lord, help our timidity and impatience! WHAT A PARADOX Lord Jesus, the Messiah, leaves his people to send the Holy Spirit and be closer to them. He warns, guides, encourages, and prepares his disciples (including us) for all this. Still, it is almost too much. He is with us, behind us, ahead of us, and waiting for us to catch him. The Spirit and the bride say, "Come, follow, and do not be timid. Enter through the gate to feed from the Tree of Life." Come, Lord Jesus! Give us courage. Nourish us on yourself to take the first step. Amen! Text, Philip J. Sandstrom, STD © 2000, OCP.
