Today is National Crayon day.

Here are 10 colorful facts about crayons that you didn’t know, that you didn’t need to know:

  1. Crayons used to be scented
    1. Brown used to smell like chocolate
    2. Red was cherry
    3. Black was licorice
    4. This was all the way up to 1995
    5. Parents were worried that their kids would eat them
  2. Crayola makes 3 Billion crayons a year
    1. That’s enough to circle the earth 6 times
    2. Of those 3 billion, blue is the most popular color
    3. 226 Billion have been produced to date
  3. They used to be sold door-to-door
    1. This was in 1903
    2. They were an 8-count box
    3. They costed nickel at that time
    4. Inflation makes that worth about $1.50 today
  4. The average American kid will wear down 720 crayons by his/her 10th birthday
    1. Kids also spend an average of 28 minutes coloring everyday
  5. One of their top crayon makers was colorblind
    1. He worked for them for 37 years
    2. He retired in 1990
    3. He help produce 1.4Billion crayons
  6. Crayola has over 100 colors
    1. Currently 120 colors you can buy today
    2. There are actually more though, because there were some special editions
    3. Oprah's “the color purple”
