Christin Bummer used to lavish care on dogs via her Canine Kingdom business. Now she coaches humans to give similar consideration to themselves. She went plant-based in 2011, just before Forks Over Knives was released. In fact, she turned vegan overnight, which made me wonder how she relates to clients who don't keep their promises to themselves as she has been able to. But then Christin revealed her own secret behavior during pregnancy, adding Starbucks lattes, then non-vegan scones, then Panera chocolate chip cookies, even while she was an ethical vegan activist. She snapped out of it - again, overnight - after naming it a processed food addiction (under the guidance of Chef AJ and John Pierre) and committing to abstinence of sugar, flour, and alcohol. Coach Approach As a coach, Christin's philosophy is to meet people where they are, rather than impose a model of addiction on them. She's a big fan of the power of group coaching, and values the dynamics that a community of support can bring to the individual. She credits her own self-development work for her ability to stay focused, curious, intuitive, and helpful to her clients. At the end of the day, the details of the food plan or workout plan are trivialities compared to the mindset and the deep internal dialogs that determine our actions. For example, many women in caretaker roles abandon their own needs due to a belief that "I don't matter." Eventually, as those around them demand more and more of their time and attention, they become resentful. Operating from a different belief becomes far more important than blocking off 30 minutes of yoga in their calendar. We spent some time unpacking the practice of Intuitive Coaching, which involves trusting oneself and the client, and engaging in deep, curiosity-driven listening. 33: Kate Galli on Working with People Pleasers, Doubters, and Foodies 33:01

Kate Galli is a health coach and trainer in Sydney, Australia, as well as a health and animal rights activist. Howard spoke with her about the three biggest obstacles to going plant-based that she encounters in her clients, and how she deals with them. Obstacle #1: they don't want to stand out and are hesitant to inconvenience others. While ethical vegans aren't going to "slip up" - their beliefs are "locked and loaded" - those going plant-based for health reasons often see room for leeway, which can become a slippery slope. Her strategies include connecting her clients to their values and beliefs, reminding them of the opportunity to be a trailblazer and help others, and noticing how they navigate their standards and actions in domains in which they're currently successful. Obstacle #2: they're confused because of all the online propaganda from big meat and dairy Instead of arguing with cold hard facts and animal rights passion. Kate now leads with deliciousness, presenting food and recipes that bypass the rational mind completely. This is more effective than sharing documentaries or websites or books. And this relates directly to... Obstacle #3: they think that vegan food is boring and restrictive When people think about "sacrificing" what they love, it's hard to imagine they can stick with it for long. Andrew Taylor has a unique coaching "origin story." An obese, diabetic food addict, he decided to quit eating the way an alcoholic gives up booze and a cocaine addict abstains from blow. Since eliminating food entirely wasn't possible, he decided to consume nothing but potatoes for an entire year. His YouTube-chronicled journey of weight loss, regained health, and renewed self-esteem made him famous in a way, to the point where lots of other people wanted his guidance in changing their diets and getting healthy. As a school teacher working with at-risk youth, Andrew (increasingly known by his new nickname, "Spudfit," had a lot of experience with people with impulse control deficits and a lot of hopelessness. He applied his existing skill set to his health clients, and refined various strategies to help them "prime their minds" every morning, avoid predictable pitfalls, and treat their recovery as a science experiment. The heart of his method is a type of questioning that challenges his clients to revise their perception of reality. The space created by uncertainty about old ways of thinking allows for new actions, which further challenge the client's old assumptions. As Andrew says, everyone wants to improve.
