When a young Eva Kollisch arrives as a refugee in New York in 1940, she finds a community among socialists who share her values and idealism. She soon discovers ‘the cause’ isn’t as idyllic as it seems. Little does she know this is the beginning of a lifelong commitment to activism and her determination to create radical change in ways that include belonging, love and one's full self. In addition to Eva Kollisch’s memoirs Girl in Movement (2000) and The Ground Under My Feet (2014), LBI’s collections include an oral history interview with Eva conducted in 2014 and the papers of Eva’s mother, poet Margarete Kolllisch, which document Eva’s childhood experience on the Kindertransport. Learn more at www.lbi.org/kollisch . Exile is a production of the Leo Baeck Institute , New York | Berlin and Antica Productions . It’s narrated by Mandy Patinkin. Executive Producers include Katrina Onstad, Stuart Coxe, and Bernie Blum. Senior Producer is Debbie Pacheco. Associate Producers are Hailey Choi and Emily Morantz. Research and translation by Isabella Kempf. Sound design and audio mix by Philip Wilson, with help from Cameron McIver. Theme music by Oliver Wickham. Voice acting by Natalia Bushnik. Success in the face of adversity. These are the stories of professional and amateur boxers, an exploration of what it takes to become a champion, a leader, and a force for good in society. The Making of Champions is produced in honor and respect for the legacy of Joe Louis--the longest reigning world heavyweight champion whose impact on society can still be measured today. One message that rings across boxing is how the ring saved many from despair. Joe Louis represents what is possible. He showed the world that anyone, regardless of the world around him, could rise and become a champion. So many of the athletes we've met and will continue to meet, tell a story that echoes the themes of Joe Louis's life. It is this chord that resonates with us. It's knowing that there are young people whose courage, hard work, and optimism have carried them out of darkness into the light. This is the inspiration that we believe can be the guiding light to others who face adversity, giving them courage and helping them achieve their goals.

The metamorphosis, the resurrection, the rising, the becoming Butterfly, & the understanding of the power of good – and that her destined mission on this planet is to serve, have given her wings to fly. Ultimately it comes down to showing strength & perseverance in the face of adversity, advocating for what you believe in, and spreading joy wherever you can. Together we can generate powerful forces of change- and make this world a better place. That is the meaning behind the words Butterfly Strong… it’s the Malibu Dana philosophy… it's caring about something greater than yourself, being part of something bigger than all of us, and serving this beautiful planet and all its humanity every single day.…
