Politics & the Bible: Understanding Origin, Purpose, Position & Posture | 704 Church
Manage episode 448498194 series 3462347
In this timely sermon, Pastor Thaddeus Fennig guides us through a biblical understanding of government—its origin, purpose, position, and our posture as Christians within it. Drawing from Romans 13:4 (“For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer”) and Romans 13:5 (“Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience”), Pastor Thad explains that government is meant to promote good and restrain evil, according to God’s design. In Romans 15:15, he further highlights our call to live peacefully and respectfully, honoring God through our witness.
In exploring the balance of obedience and conviction, Pastor Thad recounts stories where faithful followers of God chose to stand firm in their faith despite pressure from authority. In Daniel 3, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to bow down to King Nebuchadnezzar’s golden image, standing by their conviction to worship only God. Similarly, in Daniel 6, Daniel faced the lions' den rather than cease his prayers to the Lord. Another powerful example is found in Exodus 1:17, where Hebrew midwives courageously defied Pharaoh's order to kill male infants, choosing to preserve life instead.
Pastor Thad emphasizes how these acts of courage weren’t meant to incite rebellion or shame others; they were deeply personal decisions rooted in reverence for God. These examples call us, as followers of Christ, to approach every challenge with humility, trusting in God’s sovereignty. As Matthew 5:16 instructs, “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Pastor Thad closes with 1 Timothy 2:1: “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people,” reminding us to pray for our leaders and approach political discourse with a heart grounded in God’s eternal truth.
