Our brains are the epicenter of our being, shaping our thoughts, emotions, and actions. So, this week on Aging Less: The Longevity Science Insights Podcast, host Marie Stella consults associate professor Associate Professor Mac Shine on how our mental processes can influence our lifespan and cognitive abilities.

A systems neurobiologist, Associate Professor Mac Shine works to understand the mechanisms of cognition and attention using functional brain imaging, both in health and disease. Currently working as a joint NHMRC/Bellberry fellow at The University of Sydney, he has a particular interest in understanding how the different arms of the ascending arousal system flexibility modulate the cross-scale organization of the brain to facilitate adaptive behavior.

In this episode, Associate Professor Mac Shine shares that, while it is a struggle to offer precise recommendations, general guidelines for prolonged cognitive health include the usual suspects of maintaining regular exercise, a healthy diet, embracing novelty and social engagements.

Together, Marie and Associate Professor Mac Shine discuss the various types of neural activity as well as how the overuse of digital interaction can lead to chronic stress. So, tune in for expert insights on how our brain works, and best practices for maintaining cognitive health!
