Anyone who went to school in the 80s and 90s recognizes the sparkly unicorns, day-glo dolphins and bejeweled kittens that adorned folders and pencil cases. Those memorable designs came from Lisa Frank, Inc., a brand that defined girlhood for a generation of Americans only to seemingly disappear overnight. Now, a new docuseries on Prime Video, Glitter & Greed: The Lisa Frank Story, goes behind the neon-hued world of Lisa Frank to reveal a much darker reality.
The four-part docuseries uncovers a stranger-than-fiction tale that takes viewers into a hidden world lurking at the heart of the company that wasn’t all puppies and rainbows. Glitter & Greed features interviews with Lisa Frank, Inc. insiders and journalists who describe a toxic work environment and corporate greed that ultimately destroyed the once-thriving business.
Glitter & Greed: The Lisa Frank Story was executive produced by Emmy Award-winning producer and director Mary Robertson who last revealed the dark underbelly of ‘90s kids TV shows with the hit docuseries Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV. Mary was the showrunner of The New York Times Presents documentaries Framing Britney Spears and Controlling Britney Spears, both critically lauded documentaries that touched off a reckoning on Spears' treatment, misogyny, conservatorships and tabloid culture. (In the wake of both films, Ms. Spears’s father was suspended as conservator and the judge terminated the conservatorship entirely.) Mary also helped create and executive produce The Weekly, whose first season garnered nine Emmy nominations and four wins as well as CNN’s Tricky Dick, a portrait of Richard Nixon that the Wall Street Journal featured in its year-end best of TV list.
