Data shows NSW crime rate steady for the first time post-pandemic
Manage episode 454831331 series 2343952
The latest NSW crime statistics from BOCSAR show stability across all 13 major offence categories over the two years to September 2024—the first time since 2022 with no significant increases.
Clinton speaks with Jackie Fitzgerald, BOCSAR's Executive Director, who notes the positive trend: “While property crime has been declining since 2018, we’ve seen persistent rises in domestic and sexual assault. It’s encouraging that as of September 2024, no major violent or property crimes have increased in the past two years, both in Sydney and regional NSW.”
Motor vehicle theft, previously on the rise, also appears to have stabilized statewide. Only 5 of 28 NSW areas reported increases over the past two years. Additionally, court actions against adults and young people have remained steady.
However, a 10-year view reveals notable increases in some offences:
- Domestic violence-related assault: Up 3% annually, rising in most regional and Sydney areas.
- Sexual assault: Up 8.2% annually, increasing across all locations.
- Other sexual offences: Up 2.9% annually.
- Shoplifting: Up 2.8% annually.
The data highlights progress but also long-term challenges in tackling specific crimes.
