This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for January 14th, 2021.
Coronavirus deaths in the U.S. hit another one-day high at over 4,300. The nation’s overall death toll is closing in fast on the number of Americans killed in World War II, which is about 407,000.
California is expanding who can get the vaccine, and it now includes residents 65 and older. The goal is to administer an additional 1 million doses by the end of the week. And to that end, 36,000 dentists were added to the pool of personnel allowed to administer the vaccines.
Speaking of California, Los Angeles County Health Services released a report showing approximately 1 in 3 people in that county has been infected since the start of the pandemic. That’s assuming though that not everyone who’s had the virus had a laboratory-confirmed case.
With vaccines in the market and teachers starting to get that vaccine, state leaders are increasingly pushing for schools to reopen. There is however still resistance from top education officials and reminders the U.S. is in the midst of the worst surge.
While there are some manufacturing issues, some good news about Johnson & Johnson’s one-dose vaccine. Trial data published yesterday shows it’s safe and appears to generate a promising immune response in both young and elderly volunteers. The trial showed one shot “gives sustainable antibodies.”
The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Morgan, KY. Barbour, WV. Jasper, TX. Tyler, TX. Crane, TX. Hyde, NC. Stonewall, TX. Montour, PA. Carter, OK. And Osborne, KS.
There are now 9,247,381 active cases in the United States. The current Top 10 states by number of active cases: California, Florida, New York, Arizona, Georgia, Texas, Virginia, Missouri, Maryland, and Colorado.
