This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for January 26th, 2021.
Is it suddenly over? The Governor of California lifted stay-at-home orders across the state yesterday because coronavirus conditions are improving. Southern California still has an ICU capacity of 0%, but the Governor said the move is based on modeling for the next 4 weeks.
And we ask again, is it suddenly over? Dr. Anthony Fauci said yesterday cases and hospitalizations are dropping in most of the country. But why? He speculated it’s a natural plateau after the post-holiday surge and said it cannot likely be attributed to vaccines.
One major pharmaceutical company is giving up. Merck is abandoning two potential vaccines after early-stage studies delivered poor results. The company will focus instead on two possible treatments for the virus that also haven’t been approved by regulators yet.
Despite the concern they express for the public, many wealthy people are using a range of strategies to make sure they get the vaccine first. In Hollywood, they’re using private and concierge health services, and, until it was banned, private flights to Florida to get vaccinated. Doctors in Beverly Hills say they’re getting five-figure bribes. And there are reports of people getting temporarily fake-hired in the healthcare industry so they can get their shots.
They’re considered essential but Americans are being warned to stay out of supermarkets. New research shows a clear link between COVID-19 exposure and grocery stores. One study found that’s the most frequent location people visited prior to testing positive. The CDC advises everyone order groceries online for home delivery or pickup.
In the United States cases were down 33%, deaths down 5%, and hospitalizations down 9% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since January 8th.
