Sierra Leone says it has launched an investigation into reports that a convicted drug felon and one of Europe’s most wanted individuals may be living in Sierra Leone. Jos Leijdekkers appears in a photo taken during an event attended by President Julius Maada Bio. According to Reuters, Leijdekkers was sentenced in June in absentia to 24 years in prison by a Dutch court for smuggling more than 7 tons of cocaine --- and has been in Sierra Leone since early 2023. Sierra Leone Information Minister Chernor Bah VOA’s James Butty, the government has no knowledge of the identity and issues associated with Leijdekkers.

Somalia’s state media reports that Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was in the country’s capital Mogadishu on Thursday to hold discussions with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. The visit follows what analysts say is a thaw in icy relations between the two neighbors. The relationship soured in January 2024 when Ethiopia announced plans to lease a stretch of coastline in Somalia's breakaway Somaliland region. The United Nations, along with its partners and the Democratic Republic of Congo government, Thursday launched a $2.5 billion Humanitarian Response Plan for the people of eastern DRC. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said the plan seeks $2.5 billion this year to provide life-saving assistance and protection for 11 million people, including 7.8 million internally displaced in DRC. The new chairman of Tanzania’s main opposition Chadema party has been clarifying his policy of no reforms, no elections in Tanzania. Tundu Lissu says the idea does not mean that Chadema will boycott the 2025 elections. Instead, he says the party will work to convince Tanzanians that such reforms are necessary if Tanzania is to have free and fair elections. The government says it has already implemented electoral reforms, and that Chadema’s fixation on them may be rooted in the party’s lack of preparedness.
