Stepping into a New York City blanketed by smoke from recent wildfires, we couldn't help but recall the eerie atmosphere of early COVID-19 days, where masks became a daily necessity. Join us as we navigate through the peculiar transformation of the cityscape, the burnt aroma in the air, and a sky painted with rose hues. Despite these unsettling conditions, New Yorkers soldiered on with their daily routines, albeit with added precautions. However, the smoke brought more than just a haze—it disrupted air travel and posed significant health concerns. Meanwhile, further south, Florida grapples with ocean temperatures soaring to alarming levels, threatening its pristine beaches and highlighting a worrying trend in our climate crisis.
In an era where climate change is redefining our environment, we explore the broader implications of rising ocean temperatures on tropical storms and hurricanes, foreseeing potential unprecedented weather events. The interconnectedness of the global carbon cycle and its cascading effects on ecosystems and weather patterns reminds us of the urgent need for action. Drawing parallels to fictional scenarios in "Extrapolations" and historical events like Pompeii and Atlantis, we reflect on humanity's role in these environmental shifts.
