Neophilia, The Love of All Things New
Manage episode 453920332 series 3571879
We talk about why old people like novel things, or informally "neophilia", which is Greek for "new" + "affection or love", or literally love of the new.
We cover a variety of works of fiction that we enjoyed that triggered this response like Scavengers Reign, The Southern Reach Trilogy, and Annihilation as well as other works that we find familiar and comforting like The Office, Gilmore Girls, and The Matrix.
We also touch on more concepts in the realm of human psyche, like if we like to find novel things in works of fiction versus lived experience. Or if we have the need to find familiar in make-believe or the real world.
