Historically, there’s been a lot of focus on the decline of traditional media. Newspapers, radio, and television have had to evolved-or-shrink, with many across the U.S. shrinking or disappearing entirely. The health of the news business is something of an interesting debate, though. While digital is attributed to doing the most damage to traditional outlets like newspapers, shifting consumer habits have made it difficult for even the most nimble of digital orgs to survive. To discuss the state of media in the Finger Lakes, Central New York, and the U.S.-at-large — I sat down with Steve Keeler, longtime professor and Telecommunications Department Head at Cayuga Community College. Keeler recently retired, at least partially, after 36 years full-time with the College. We discussed the evolution of the news business, who’s doing the most-innovative work, and what an evolving media landscape means for consumers.
