71: Edmund Kemper
Manage episode 454569433 series 3486385
Edmund Kemper, also known as the "Co-ed Killer," is an infamous American serial killer and necrophile who was active in the early 1970s. His life and crimes are a chilling case study in abnormal psychology and criminal behavior.
Kemper displayed signs of troubling behavior early on, including cruelty to animals and fantasies of violence. At age 15, he murdered his grandparents, an act he later claimed was to "see what it felt like." He was subsequently sent to a psychiatric facility, where he was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. However, he was released at age 21, and deemed rehabilitated.
Between 1972 and 1973, Kemper committed a series of heinous murders, primarily targeting young female college students hitchhiking in the Santa Cruz area. He killed six young women, his mother, and her friend. Kemper would lure victims into his car, kill them, and often dismember their bodies. His crimes included strangulation, shooting, and post-mortem mutilation. He also engaged in necrophilic acts with the bodies of his victims. Kemper's last victims were his mother and her friend. After killing his mother, he mutilated her body in particularly gruesome ways, reflecting his deep-seated hatred for her.
In April 1973, Kemper turned himself into the police, confessing to his crimes. He was convicted of eight counts of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
He is, by far, one of the most disturbed serial killers we have ever covered!
