Spearheaded by Dr. Cruz and a devoted group of community members, it draws inspiration from the Freedom Schools established by the Black Panthers and community-oriented educational models like Roses in Concrete, initiated by educator Jeff Duncan-Andrade.

Dr. Cruz highlighted the crucial contributions of individuals such as Ventura Flores, Mercedes Flores-Casiano, Rubi Pelayo, Selena Gonzalez-Duarte, Reverend Harry Williams, Dr. Newin Orante, Dr. Gerald “G” T. Reyes, and Sister B, whose collective efforts have been instrumental in realizing the vision of the Freedom School. This project, as Dr. Cruz emphasized, is a testament to the community’s resolve, with every initiative reflecting the aspirations and necessities of its beneficiaries. From addressing food insecurity through the Love Package team to honoring Fannie Lou Hamer with a dedicated farm, the school’s endeavors are firmly rooted in community engagement and empowerment.

At the heart of the Freedom School’s philosophy is an education model that diverges from conventional standards, prioritizing smaller class sizes, personalized support, and a curriculum that mirrors the experiences of Black and Brown communities. Dr. Cruz underscored the importance of such an approach in addressing educational inequities faced by marginalized communities, challenging systemic obstacles and censorship with a comprehensive and inclusive educational framework.

The dialogue also explored the school’s funding and operational strategies, highlighting its independence from governmental support. This autonomy enables the inclusion of often-censored subjects like Black and Brown histories, ensuring a holistic and empowering educational experience.

Despite facing challenges ranging from book bans to the educational disruptions caused by the pandemic, the Freedom School continues to shine as a symbol of hope, buoyed by the steadfast support of the East Oakland community. Future initiatives, including the establishment of the Freedom School Institute and a convening of thought leaders, reflect a visionary approach to reimagining educational paradigms.
