Cobb Sheriff Implements Non-Lethal PepperBall Devices

The Cobb County Sheriff’s Office has partnered with PepperBall to enhance community safety by deploying non-lethal weapons, marking the largest rollout of the PepperBall BLAST in the U.S. The BLAST is a handheld launcher for close-range situations, using PAVA powder projectiles to incapacitate targets. Training for the BLAST has been ongoing, with all sworn staff expected to be trained by year-end. These launchers, powered by compressed gases, are designed to de-escalate confrontations without lethal force. The projectiles release a pepper irritant cloud, causing temporary discomfort to encourage compliance. The initiative aims to reduce injuries and fatalities in law enforcement encounters. The devices are distinctly colored to avoid confusion with firearms. Sheriff Craig Owens highlights the effectiveness of these tools in detention centers, emphasizing their role in saving lives and maintaining safety.
