This week’s episode of the Not A Mama Yet podcast is with Dr. Karen Joubert. She is considered one of the most accomplished and experienced physical therapists today with more than 25 years of experience in health care and runs one of Southern California’s most respected physical therapy practices.

Karen is passionate about learning and educating patients about healthy living and understanding the true source of their pain. She co-developed “My Therapy Exercise,” the world’s very first PT app, endorsed by the American Physical Therapy Association and she has contributed to several other pain related devices/products used today in the field of health care, along with books and publications. Joubert Physical Therapy provides the current state-of-the art treatment methods and equipment available on the market to benefit all of their patients.

Karen is considered one of the most successful all-round gymnasts in New York Section VII history and trained as a figure skater and toured professionally for five years as a featured performer with the Ice Capades. These athletic experiences helped prepare Karen to pursue her ultimate passion — becoming a world-class Physical Therapist.

I wanted to speak to Karen because I know that as we age, our bodies start to develop aches and pains, we develop issues sleeping, and moving how we used to changes so it’s important we focus on our bodies and how we take care of them now. People are also waiting longer to have children which means parents are older when they are surviving on less sleep and chasing toddlers old around their home. How we care for our bodies from eating to physical exercise will impact all of that.

Our conversation covers how Karen broke into the industry, her tips for people who are planning to have children (and those who aren’t!), and how she helps women before, during, and after pregnancy. We also spoke about the various reasons why people might want to go see a physical therapist other than those obvious reasons after injuries or surgery, some of which may surprise you!
