In cricket, being a good batsman takes guts, courage, and the ability to get on the front foot, even though a batter could get seriously injured if he or she misses and gets hit by the ball. Self-preservation can often overcome a batter who is more concerned about not getting hurt than scoring runs! In the same way, we usually try to live a life of faith while avoiding the pain that might come from having to step forward, give something up, or do something we’ve never done before! Jesus referred to it when he said that those who love their lives will lose them. He meant that if we’re too concerned about preserving what we have, we’ll miss out on what could be if we confidently overcome the challenges we face every day!
