Patricia Highsmith staat bekend als de uitvindster van de psychologische thriller. In 1955 verscheen haar eerste boek over Tom Ripley. Daarna volgden nog vier delen over deze mysterieuze hoofdpersoon. Highsmith schreef vanuit een perspectief dat waarschijnlijk nog niet eerder belicht was in het misdaadgenre: zij volgde niet het slachtoffer of de detective, maar de moordenaar. Dat haar verhalen bijna zeventig jaar oud zijn, is dankzij de kundige spanningsopbouw en fascinerende analyse van personages nauwelijks te merken.
