The World Football Programme, on 107.9FM Radio Fremantle for Saturday June 29, 2024.

This week, Penny Tanner Hoath and Pete Szkiela walk you through what’s happening in the world of football. The station is doing some much-needed fundraising by way of Bunnings Sausage Sizzle and Radiothon during July. Please help by becoming a station member for as little as $55. More news on the World Football page soon!

Pen and Pete banter all the local competitions as well as news around the world game globally. Our guest line-up this week is:

Steve Atkins, MUMFC NPLW Coach. 2024 is one of the toughest years for MUMFC in the top flight. Why is that? The club is one at of the biggest in WA. What is the club doing to dig deep and work its way up the league table? The club is huge, with more than 1500 players and 11 female teams. What more can the club do to claim some better women’s football real estate? Will Perth Glory’s Ella Mastrantonio joining the club help create a change the club badly needs? Profiling- League stats, young players, state team representatives.

Women’s International Football Cup, Perth, in August. Manchester City, West Ham United, Leicester City and Paris Saint-Germain women's teams will play in Perth in a week-long exhibition tournament at Perth Stadium. Tickets from Ticketek. The double header September 1 is selling fast. Prices are up to $50 generally.

Stan Lazaridis, Perth Glory Football Director. Both of the club’s head coaches, Alen Stajcic and Alex Epakis, have left Glory and David Zdrilichas just been appointed. Stan shares with us where the club wants to go now with its coaching philosophy. How close is the club to making an appointment for the women? Tell us about the existing Glory system and if that will change to align with a new club philosophy and new coaches. Will player signings be held until new coaches are appointed? Who are the new faces of Glory, men and women, signed so far in this off season for the A-Leagues. Tell us about working with fan groups and the community and what impact that has on the club’s new direction.

Blayne Treadgold, from FSAA and The Far Post’s, chats to us about football sustainability and our football profile in the community. How has the performances of the Socceroos and Matildas in the last two years impacted on the profile of soccer in Australia, locally and has our profile changed forever in the community due to Matildas Mania. How long can it continue? There are lots of events, engagements and forums happening across Australia post men’s and women’s World Cups to connect and engage the community. Examples being FSAA, Football West women’s leadership group, the recent FA Forum. Is the APL sustainable in its own right now all A League clubs have owners. Do we need to actively dislodge AFL from its Australian media mantle or is Matildas Mania working its magic through the community and changing our position in the Australian sporting ecosystem organically? Comments on resourcing and the impact of World Cup football is having on club management and how is the local game coping with numbers and spaces.

Sue Read, Canberra United. What is the future of Canberra United looking like right at this moment? Is it stable and resourced ready for a new A League season? We talk about the new coach signing and the impact of that on keeping current players and attracting new ones. Has Football Australia stepped in to lend support to the club like they would for a men’s A League club? Where is the Canberra United men’s venture at?

Greg Farrell, Futsal WA Director. Futsal WA teams up with Football West in a huge partnership that will promote futsal in WA. We hope to catch Greg for a quick chat amongst his usual Saturday coaching programmes.
