Book Summary
This book presents what I have learned about the "practical" or "working" or "Hero" Phasers filmed in season one of "Star Trek"TM TOS on the various prop forums that I joined and from other sources. This book covers how many "practical" or working phasers were made by the Desilu Props Department by July 1966 before filming of the television series began. I provide drawings of the working or "Hero" phaser pistols (P2s) and the Hero "phaser unit 1" or P1 as they would have appeared if the DPD had made them exactly to the future Art Director's working drawings. In addition I provide a drawing of the sight control mechanism of Matt's phaser unit 1 (P1). I also provide drawings of the 4 black and white (B&W) practical or working (Hero) phaser pistols (P2) and a B&W Hero phaser unit 1 (P1) filmed in season one. I then provide full color drawings of the four Hero P2s "reworked" by Wah Ming Chang. And two full color drawings of two of the four Hero phaser unit ones (P1) reworked by Wah Ming Chang.This book then traces three of the four working pistol Phasers filmed in episode 5 throughout season one and I do the same thing for the fourth original working pistol Phaser first filmed in episode 6, "The Man Trap". The working phasers were fabricated by Desilu Studios employees working in the Desilu Props Department (DPD) to the future Art Director's (Walter M. Jefferies) working drawings before filming began in July 1966.I then tell you in which episode the first "Midgrade" P2, made by the DPD, was filmed. I then provide trace tables that trace the 4 B&W practical phaser guns that were made before filming began throughout season one. I include the links (URLs) for photos and movies of the only surviving working Hero phaser pistol.This Special Edition includes 30 new drawings and 7 new color photos. In addition I have included all of my B&W P2 and P1 rendering sheets and my latest WMC P2 and P1 rendering sheets.
