Following an anonymous tip in 1997, police entered a mansion in Rancho Santa Fe, an exclusive suburb of San Diego, California, and discover 39 victims of a mass suicide. Members of the cult known as “Heaven’s Gate” including their leader Marshall Herff Applewhite, left video diaries explaining their reasons for the mass suicide: Applewhite had convinced them in order to reach heaven, they must abandon their human forms and board an alien spacecraft that would trail behind the comet Hale-Boop, and they would then soar through space to a better place, known as “the Next Level.” So, how was another religious cult leader able to lead his flock to their deaths willingly.
