Can a nonbeliever still go to church and enjoy themself? This caller is feeling conflicted and guilty for attending services as an atheist. Why might some people say criticizing the Old Testament is anti-semitic? Vi points out that understanding the history of anti-semitism and deadly prejudice stemming from a misrepresentation of the Hebrew Bible is crucial. Eric emphasizes that you may not be aware you’re repeating harmful talking points, and to always make sure you’re explicit in your critique of ideas, not people.
As good skeptics, we know the best way to find out if your perception of a thing is wrong is to talk to the experts! In this case, a good next step for anyone asking this kind of question would be to talk to Jewish scholars and theologians to discuss what misconceptions about the Hebrew Bible exist in modern Christian thought.
