Lunatic asylums in the Victorian era were used to punish women who disagreed with or questioned social norms. The conditions in the asylum were poor, treatment was practically nonexistent. Through the dedication and endurance of strong women, laws were changed, conditions improved, and women who truly needed mental healthcare were able to find quality care, and most importantly women were allowed a voice.
