On today’s episode of the Weird and Wonderful, we tap into the rich history of Opera music in South Africa. From its early roots intertwined with colonial influences to it blossoming as a vibrant expression of cultural identity. This genre has has gifted us with artists such as Pretty Yende and Levy Sekgapane, who lead opera productions on some of the most prestigious stages globally. Are you a fan of Opera music? To unpack this we are joined by Wayne Muller, A research affiliate at the Africa Open Institute for Music, Research and Innovation at Stellenbosch University who has done research on the performance history of opera in Cape Town.
