The education minister Daryl Matthew has signaled that the government has no immediate plans to propose banning corporal punishment in schools, despite his and the Prime Minister Gaston Browne's staunch and vocal support for the same idea around mid-2021. In a heated moment during an interview on Observer Radio with Joseph Apparicio, he famously said that he wouldn't condone a school official beating any child of his. What changed? In this episode, we ask: Has the administration taken the right decision in leaving corporal punishment alone? And what could have prompted policymakers to keep the status quo.

This programme first aired on NewsCo Observer Radio 91.1 FM on February 20th, 2022. The host is Kieron Murdoch. The guests are:

  1. Vernice Mack, retired principal, formerly principal of the Buckley’s primary school.
  2. Carlon Knight, socio-economic and political commentator.
  3. Prof. Disraeli Hutton, retired lecturer. He was a lecturer in educational leadership and management, at the School of Education, University of the West Indies, Mona.
