Keep Hustling or Take a Break Last week I took my first bit of time off since my honeymoon to Canada last year. Although the honeymoon was a strick “no work zone” (or I may have had to deal with a divorce before we were even back!) as we were travelling around seeing the beautiful countryside that the west side of Canada has to offer, neither of us really “unwound” so to speak. So in reality, our week on the north Devon coast was the first time in a very look time that Emily and I truly had time to switch off and relax. I have to admit that before we went I was filled with anxiety about being out of the office. I’m only 3 months into a new position, and have been burned before whilst away on holiday (Once an ex-colleague of mine even planted something to get me into trouble because they were jealous of my position!), so was just a bit wary about loosening my grip on my work. To give myself credit I made sure that three separate people in the office were fully on top of the world load I had, and also, my boss told me he would offer extra support, so this made me feel better. Then there is the whole preaching hard work and hustle. Was I now going to turn my back on that for a week? Well the reality of it was the Emily and I had one of our best holidays ever. Spending time with her (when we are currently living a part to save money... as my followers will know) was amazing and also having a week with her family was an extra treat. The weather was great, I felt little pressure to constantly check my emails, and I genuinely relaxed for the first time in a while. And what was the result? I was able to take a step back and look at what I’d achieved in the last 6 months, what I planed to achieve in the next 6 and reflect a bit. This ultimately meant I was able to recharge and have a week of calm and I’ve now come back with a renewed spring in my step. If you had asked me my feelings on holidays a few weeks ago my answer would have been something along the lines of “don’t take them until you’ve achieved your goals”, but now I realise that taking a break from time to time will actually help you achieve those goals quicker. I’m not advocating now booking a string of holidays, but I’d highly recommend working some kind of chill time into your diary at some point as it certainly has had a positive effect on me!
