Few people realise the catastrophic decline in mental health that has occurred over the past 50 years. 43% of the world's population have disability due to brain related disorders. ‘Brain health conditions have become a global health emergency,’ according to the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies last year.

Globally, 15 percent of all disability is due to brain and mental health disorders. The lifetime cost of Alzheimer’s in 2022 was estimated to be €1.2 trillion across the EU, exceeding even cancer and heart disease. But most worrying are the trends of falling IQ at a rate of about 7 percent a generation. On this flight path, by 2080, more than a third of children will be neurodevelopmentally impaired. Why? Most importantly what can we do to reclaim our brain and mental health?

Psychologist and nutritionist Patrick Holford, author of Upgrade Your Brain and founder of the Food for the Brain Foundation, unpacks four biological drivers directly under your control to upgrade your brain and demetian-proof your diet.

Patrick Holford BSc, DipION, FBANT, NTCRP Patrick Holford, BSc, DipION, FBANT, NTCRP, is a leading spokesman on nutrition and mental health and founder of both the Food for the Brain Foundation, and the Institute for Optimum Nutrition, . Originally trained in psychology. He was one of the first promoters of the importance of zinc, essential fats, low-GL diets and homocysteine-lowering B vitamins and their importance in mental health and Alzheimer’s prevention. He is the author of 46 books, translated into over 30 languages, including The Optimum Nutrition Bible and his latest book Upgrade Your Brain He is a retired visiting professor at the University of Teeside and is in the Orthomolecular Medicine Hall of Fame.
