Nothing is safe, folks, not even toothpaste. A recent study suggests that a low-calorie sweetener found in hundreds of popular snacks, toothpaste and gum may raise the risk of a stroke or heart attack. In the headlines on #TheUpdate this Monday, Mayor Adams issued an emergency order Saturday suspending parts of a new law intended to ban solitary confinement in local jails a day before it was to take effect, citing concerns for the safety of staff and detainees. Summer Rising is falling — with attendance for the K-8 summer program nosediving, and taxpayers wondering where the $350 million spent for the ill-conceived Covid-era classes and camps has gone. And in Decision 2024, barely a week ago, a sense of inevitability hung over the U.S. presidential election. And now, just 99 days before Election Day, a fundamentally new race is taking shape featuring new candidates, a new issue focus and a new outlook for both parties.
