×The Star of Bethlehem, wisemen ruining nativity scenes, Santa Claus, and that nasty Herod the Great: Elizabeth and Monika answer listener questions about Christmas and chat about just a few of the traditions that have gone awry, biblical tradition in historical accounts, and other holly jolly related points. ________________________ When this is the day … you want to encourage your child to believe in Santa Claus, consider how they will distinguish between the truth of an unseen God and the fiction of a god-like Santa Claus with similar attributes. The pastors who scribble down a sermon on a napkin, should toss that sucker where it belongs: in the trash. The teaching on Sunday is our first line of discipleship, which means the church you attend is critically important. But what happens after the Sunday sermon? The discipleship must continue. So how do you go about it? ________________________ When this is the day you’re waiting around for someone to ask you to disciple them, don’t. Ask an elder or a deacon to connect you with someone. Ask around. Ask someone you’ve connected with if they’re being discipled. If they have someone else in mind to disciple them, help connect them! This isn't dating. It's discipleship. Rejection don't matter. Obedience to the command to disciple others, matters. ________________________ Resources: Songs of Suffering: 25 Hymns and Devotions for Weary Souls by Joni Eareckson Tada The Heart of Anger: Practical Help for the Prevention and Cure of Anger in Children by Lou Priolo ________________________ This Is The Day Rejoice Website Facebook | Instagram | Pinterest ________________________ We want everyone to have a free, printable bookmark, to help you spend more time rightly seeking to understand God's Word. Discernment isn’t just about figuring out what’s true and what’s not. Some things are so clear and super easy to spot. But what takes true discernment, is knowing the difference between what’s right, and what’s not quite right. Michelle Lesley of A Word Fitly Spoken podcast joins us for this episode, as we discuss how to discern a false teachers and grow in discernment. The word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. - that’s Hebrews 4:12 ________________________ When this is the day you don’t know what names can be trusted, when you don’t know which teachers, authors, and speakers, should be on a “red flag list” or if the very book you’re reading is full of sound, biblical truth - go to God’s word. Study it more than you study anything else. EVER. Memorize the scriptures so the truth is already at your finger tips. Go to your pastor or elders and ask them. Shepherding you to truth is one of their great joys AND gifts. ________________________ Resources: Michelle Lesley Website Popular False Teachers and Unbiblical Trends A Word Fitly Spoken The Gospel Call and True Conversion by Paul Washer Justin Peters Ministeries ________________________ This Is The Day Rejoice Website Facebook | Instagram | Pinterest ________________________ We want everyone to have a free, printable bookmark, to help you spend more time rightly seeking to understand God's Word. Why does it sound like Elizabeth just called Monika an “older woman”? Welp, that was not intended—because that cutie pie is far too young for that phrase. What a terrible friend! (hehe) And yet, we invite you to listen and learn with both of them about what it means to be a friend. That starts with love, which is both defined and modeled by Christ. If you’re a gold-star listener who heard this episode in Season 1, we gave that original episode the ol’ heave-ho and recorded it again with our "more seasoned" podcasting abilities. We hope you enjoy it! ________________________ When this is the day you’re feeling lonely, left out, or wishing for more friends, quiet those melancholy voices and start preaching truth to yourself instead of listening to yourself. Remember, you are here to serve and love others—not to be served. Instead of wishing you had friends, practice BEING a friend. Practice it by looking beyond our own interests and considering how we can be kind, welcoming, generous, and loving to others, all for the glory of God, trusting that He will faithfully provide friendships in His perfect timing and in His perfect way. ________________________ Resources: Through the Psalms with Pastor Don Green A Word Fitly Spoken Podcast with Michelle Lesley and Amy Spreeman ________________________ This Is The Day Rejoice Website Facebook | Instagram | Pinterest ________________________ We want everyone to have a free, printable bookmark, to help you spend more time rightly seeking to understand God's Word. Discipleship is kinda like being someone’s Google Maps for life. You help them navigate the twists and turns, giving guidance when they’re feeling lost, and cheering for them every time they "arrive." You’re their go-to for directions, but they’re the one doing the driving. In a believer's life, both discipling and being discipled is an ongoing occurence, and it's not just suggested that we go about it, but commanded by the God we serve. ________________________ When this is the day you're feeling lost, frustrated, or like you're just spinning your wheels, look at who you are imitating. Paul tells us to imitate him, as he imitates Christ. Are you following closley, one who is closely following Christ? Consider also, who is watching and following you. ________________________ Resources: " Let us Run to Jesus Part 1 " taught by Pastor Bret Hastings " Let us Run to Jesus Part 2 " taught by Pastor Bret Hastings This is an excellent series to instruct us on how to run our race of faith. We must strive to blend the wisdom of the serpent with the innocence of the dove. Chaotic. Exhausting. Heartbreaking. Joyful. It’s true that life is hard. But it’s also true that God is good. In fact, God is the very definition of good, which means that even when this fallen world is full of tragedy, heartbreak, illness, death, pain, and your basic run-of-mill bad day, we can rejoice in the hope we have in Christ. Elizabeth and Monika look intently into Psalm 118:17-24 to see just why - and HOW - we can rejoice in the midst of sorrow, pain, and trials. ________________________ When this is the day you are experiencing chaos of any kind, remember to filter it through a biblical lens. Cappuccino, smoke machines, skinny jeans, high top sneakers, rock concerts every Sunday, and the hippest slang woven into a motivational speech, where the "communicator" reads a verse or two from the New Living Translation in the midst of his motivational speech: that's the stuff crummy churches are made of. We're chatting about these churches, how to avoid them, and what God tells us a church should be in his never changing Word. ________________________ When this is the day you are examining your church and find that the pomp and circumstance points to the glory of man, that the pastor is more of a motivational speaker and less of a teacher, that the seats are filled with unrepentant sinners, (not just sinners - but UNREPENTANT SINNERS), leave that church. There is no reason to stay under unfaithful teaching. When this is the day you know your church is pastored by faithful men who rightly teach the word of God, thank the Lord for that. And pray for them continuously. ________________________ Resources: Pillar of Truth Podcast by Pastor-Teacher Travis Allen ________________________ This Is The Day Rejoice Website Facebook | Instagram | Pinterest ________________________ We want everyone to have a free, printable bookmark, to help you spend more time rightly seeking to understand God's Word. Anxiety isn’t a disorder. It is distrust. How easy it is to become distracted and consumed by the cares of this world, until our concerns have completely obscured our view of God! Instead of casting our cares upon the Lord, we focus on them until anxiety reigns. As with all things, God knows our sinful tendencies and in loving care for our souls, He gives us clear instructions on how to turn from anxiety and put on thankfulness. Philippians 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. ________________________ When this is the day you are consumed with anxiety, first turn to prayer. Even if you don't feel like it, pray anyway. Then read the Bible and pray some more. We pray because he tells us to, and we love to obey him. Prayer changes us. Submitting our desires to him through prayer - having our very desires changed and shaped through prayer - that brings glory to God. ________________________ Resources: His Glory and My Good by CityAlight Morning and Evening by Charles Spurgeon Transformed by Dr. Greg Gifford ________________________ This Is The Day Rejoice Website Facebook | Instagram | Pinterest ________________________ We want everyone to have a free, printable bookmark, to help you spend more time rightly seeking to understand God's Word. Conflict is inevitable. But just because it’s inevitable, doesn’t mean it has to be sinful. Conflict actually gives us the opportunity to practice being peacemakers, which is to put into practice, the head knowledge we have about acting righteously. But that can ONLY occur when we have one focus: to glorify God. ________________________ When this is the day that strife, disputing, and discord are running rampant, and you want to judge rightly without being critical, use scripture as your compass to determine the standard. We get these grand ideas of how we think life should be but it rarely plays out like we want it to. In return, our hearts grow weary as we fret and stew on it, trying to take control of things out of our control, fixing our hearts and minds on the problem at hand, instead of on the one who is sovereign over every problem. Inclining our hearts away from ourselves, and towards the living God who provides our every breath, is the only way to relieve that overwhelmed burden. How do we incline our hearts towards Him? By giving thanks. Thanking God realigns our heart to worship, instead of settling into a rut of self indulgent pride. ________________________ When this is the day that chaos reigns, give thanks to God. It’s his will for you to do so (1 Thessalonians). In the midst of every trial, in whatever chaos God has in store for you, no matter how inconviencied you are, how frustrated you are, how heart broken you are - give thanks to God. ________________________ Some Scriptures Mentioned: Psalm 139:5-6 Ecclesiastes 12:1 Psalm 131 Job 42:1-3 Romans 11:33-36 2 Corinthians 4:18 Isaiah 26:3 James 4:13-15 1 Thess 5:18 ________________________ This Is The Day Rejoice Website Facebook | Instagram | Pinterest ________________________ We want everyone to have a free, printable bookmark, to help you spend more time rightly seeking to understand God's Word. The meticulous craftsmanship that went into your makeup routine on Sunday, is nothing compared to the care, precision, and power that went into creating your life. Photoshopping: A sin? A blessing? Christian liberty? Why does it even matter? Our outward appearance has never been more on display than in this age of social media. One minute you’re erasing a zit, and the next you’re nearly unrecognizable perfection, ready to bask in the worship of online “likes” and praise. For professing Christians, all things must be filtered through a Biblical lens, and that includes the use of photoshop. Once upon a time … and the fairytale ended there . But God wrote a story that was better than any fable, because every trial, heartache, and lament, pointed Elizabeth to Christ and his glory, teaching her endurance, producing in her a spiritual strength, the kind that knocks you on your knees in prayer. As His ways are not our ways, nor His thoughts our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9), God’s sovereign design caused Elizabeth to grow in steadfastness, even while her husband grew harder of heart. Bad reviews, spiritual gifts, and serving the body in love. We’re talking about worshiping God through serving in your local church! Spiritual gifts matter, but perhaps not like you think they do. Episode 17: Fools hate God. Calling one a fool is truly a cutting insult. They do not love him, know him, or seek to understand. Yet, even faithful believers can act foolishly. What’s the antidote to being a fool? Getting wisdom. Wisdom is biblical knowledge in action. It’s not enough to know about the Lord, if we don’t put that knowledge into action. TODAY. Now. It doesn’t matter if you’re one to cry your eyes out or you appear impassive and cool - we are called to lament our pains to the Lord. Tornados, cannibalism, human trafficking: big trials demand a big response. Sometimes our response is to glorify God. Often our response is anger, blame, and penance. With trials like these, we sometimes stray to questioning the goodness of God. Is God good? Is God faithful? Is God powerful? Is there sin that needs to be murdered? Sin that needs to be mortified? Sin that needs to be murd-ified? The siege of Jerusalem in 2 Kings chapter 6 was no joke, and a great example of what NOT to do in a trial. ________________________ When this is the day you’re going through the kinds of trials that fills you with despair, frustration, and anger, and you feel so tired of the wickedness in the evil world around you, turn your eyes to Christ. The extreme feminist and the extreme homemaker. Both styles are trending on social media. One makes men subjective to women, erasing as many roles of men as possible. The other - the extreme homemaker, also called a “trad wife” - centers around creating an impossibly perfect, unrealistic aesthetic, marking women who are unable to achieve this farce, as failures. The Bible gives us an intense “What Not To Do” lesson via the feminist, Jezebel, and her pouty king husband, Ahab. Jezebel was a mover and shaker though! She would have been adored today, with a thriving TikTok and Instagram account. Queen Jezebel took matters into her own hands, to make her husband happy. A few murders of righteous people to get the job done? No biggie in her eyes. Whatever it takes, right? She had girl boss energy that would be idolized in today’s culture. But her wicked, sinful heart was deplorable to the Lord, and he left her to the dogs. Literally. 1 Kings 21:5-7 ________________________ When this is the day you're tempted to take over in a position you weren't made to do, remember Jezebel and her dishonorable fate. Women empowerment is a trending theme in the world right now, and as women ourselves, we have a few thoughts on the matter. The hip new word for gossip is "tea" (as in "spill the tea!") and Proverbs says gossip goes down like choice morsels. Coincidence? I think not! The fact is, gossip and slander go deep into our being, defiling our hearts and minds. Paul's greatest desire was for believers to grow in Christlikeness and in the unity of the church. Gossip and slander derail both of those things, and need to be repented of. Gossip and slander are never found alone. Sin runs in herds. You'll find gossip and slander running alongside anger, jealousy, conceit, and quarreling. ________________________ When this is the day our tongue is hungry to speak about others, we must consider our motives. The tongue. Life or death is in the power of the tongue. It dishoners or builds up and greatly affects those around us. Our hearts are known by what comes out of our mouths. When anger or anxiety are are present in our heart, our tongues will make it know. When unrepentant sin has taken told, our tongues will make it known. Criticicizing, belittling, and snapping at others, our tongues can destroy so quickly, and once words are released into the air, there's no getting them back. A critical tongue dishonors God. Monika gets personal and shares how the Lord's steadfast love abiding in her, brought her through the greatest trials of her life (thus far), and continues to sustain her every single day. And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28) ________________________ When this is the day you are questioning why something HARD, or SAD, or PAINFUL, or EXPENSIVE, or FRUSTRATING, or DISCOURAGING, is happening in your life, I hope you think about Monika, and faithful believers like her, who God sets before us as examples to encourage us to be strong in our faith. Like Monika learned and continues to practice, we must preach to ourselves scripture, rehearsing continually in our mind the good truth about who God is: his steadfast love, his merciful character, and his divine sovereignty over all the earth. ________________________ Resources: Trusting God in Trying Times by Don Green It's a book now! The character of God is trustworthy, no matter how discouraging this day is. Rehearsing the character of God in your life is a great way to deal with a difficult day. When we respond in faith, knowing the character of God, it brings him great glory and lifts up our souls. It is good to trust in the Lord. ________________________ When this is the day that everything is going wrong, it feels like your enemies are just surrounding you like bees and you can't get away from you, they are getting you where it hurts, where it's tender, and it's unexpected, and it burns - don't just rehearse your pain. Rehearse the character of God, responding to daily challenges in faith, knowing AND reminding yourself repeatedly of the character of God. ________________________ Last Episode: Yeet discouragement with thanksgiving | Psalm 118:1-4 Next Episode: Until Death Do Us Part | Meet Monika Walker Looking Ahead: Critial Tongue, Gossip, Women Empowerment ________________________ This Is The Day Rejoice Website Facebook | Instagram | Pinterest ________________________ We want everyone to have a free, printable bookmark, to help you spend more time rightly seeking to understand God's Word. Romance shmomance. It’s the month of love, or so declared the marketing gurus of way back whenever . So we’re looking at romance through the Biblical lens of Psalm 118:1-4. God's hesed love is merciful, given freely, even when we are in the most pathetic state. Way better than a box of chocolates - it never runs out and you ALWAYS know what you’re going to get: steadfast love. ________________________ When this is the day discouragement, frustration, sadness, anger, loneliness, jealousy, bitterness, or whatever other sinful or challenging emotions surface in our relationships (or lack thereof), we can look to Christ and his steadfast love, which endures forever, and rejoice in that. ________________________ Last Episode: Wash, Rinse, Repeat Next Episode: Kitchen fires and the character of God | Psalm 118:5-16 Looking Ahead: God's Steadfast Love through Marriage, Death, and Widowhood ________________________ This Is The Day Rejoice Website Facebook | Instagram | Pinterest ________________________ We want everyone to have a free, printable bookmark, to help you spend more time rightly seeking to understand God's Word. Having a Sunday spot is not enough to make us feel like we belong. In our culture, we look to sameness in activities, hobbies, sports, etc but we get disappointed when it doesn’t bring about the sense of connection we really crave. That’s because belonging starts and ends with the gospel. God made us belong to him, when he drew us to himself, giving new hearts to wretched sinners, and making us His. As believers, we belong to Christ, and that’s where our sense of belonging must start. Philippians 2:1-4 So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Dying to self: a godly habit that we have to practice and be sanctified in until we literally die, because it’s really really hard. But dying to self is what it takes to make friends and to keep friends - if you want those friendships to be built on the awesome love of Christ, that is. And you do. Friendship expresses the love of God through us, to another child of God. If we could just get it through our thick skulls that friendship always requires sacrifice, we would be well on our way to enjoying friendships in the way Christ exemplified for us - loving unconditionally, sacrificially, and at all times. John 15:13 Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. Make sure you have downloaded a bookmark for FREE to instantly print, by signing up on our website !! Is friendship really any easier nowadays than it was back when we were in kindergarten? Nope. It’s harder because now we overthink it all, plus we’ve become reeeeeeally skilled at sinning. So what’s a girl to do? Forgo friendships? Settle with besties who only reside on social media? How does one go about making friends anyway? How does one choose who makes the cut and who doesn’t get invited? How do you avoid being picked last or even worse, what if you don’t get invited to the cool things at all? And what if….!?!?! And what if…!!?!?!? And what if….!?!?! Oh that snowball of selfish thinking is hard to stop! But if we look at John 13:34-35, we remember that friendship is in fact not about us at all. How can that be? Join us as we look at friendship through a biblical lens, and remind ourselves that even shopping for friendship, should glorify Christ. __________________ We have a free resource to give you to help with your Bible Study!
